Connecticut!

Hello everyone.
As you may know I have a sick rooster! I was hoping for a hen when I bought him as a chick but now I have a sick unwanted rooster

I was planning on selling it or culling it but now I can't do either due to him being sick! I'm really not sure what to do, but he really must go asap due to all the noise he's making!

Hey CT Friends,

I just finished putting my cookie tin light bulb water heater together. Temps are going to get down to 28 degrees north of the Merrit tonight so wanted to put a reminder out to ensure that no one's waterers freeze overnight. It's only mid October but old man winter has come to say hello!!!

Thanks! I remembered to empty the scrunchy hoses and bring them in, and drain the other hose, and dump the swim pans. Feels like winter, even though there are so many leaves still on the trees!

Thanks for the reminder, It was 23 here in Brooklyn this morning and it is supposed to be colder in the morning.

what are your plans for keeping the birds warm this winter? I heard CT is going to be brutal again

I do not heat my coop, chickens do very well in the cold weather feather are a good insulator heat is a bigger concern for them. The thing you need to be concerned with are drafts and ventilation. You do not want drafts directly on the chickens but you do want sufficient ventilation. Chickens produce a lot of moisture both from breathing and waste. If there is not sufficient ventilation the humidity will rise and the chickens can get frost bit on their feet and combs

To keep the water from freezing I use a deicer that the waterer sits on.
