Connecticut!

Hello Fellow CT Peeps! I wanted to pop in and see if anyone here knew the rules and regulations for raising chickens in Southigton? If not does anyone know where I could find info?
Also, wanted to comment on this... I notice you state that you would be "insulating" your coop. I would be very careful about doing this. Too much heat in a coop could cause a lot of problems in both Winter AND Summer! I live in Upstate NY by the way. My coops are not insulated and I ran into a problem with my silkie coop this last winter. A few of my birds had gotten frost bite on their toes because there was not enough ventilation in the coop. Chickens generate a lot of heat and having insulating in a coop is not always a good thing. I would be careful with what you choose to do as far as that part of it goes. Also, it can get very hot in the summer. So if you have an insulated coop, will it be removable for the spring/ summer months?
I'd like to respectfully disagree. An insulated coop does not mean it doesn't have ventilation - it allows you to have more ventilation. I guarantee, if you have the right ratio of heat retention and ventilation and the right amount of birds to the size of the coop you will have no frostbite. Also, and insulated coop is so much cooler in summer. You can't loose.

I see, I agree with you as long as the coop has good ventilation. I just know a couple of people brought it up on our thread in NY and actually went without insulating it. I just more of less informed from what I had researched and discussed with my fellow chicken people on the subject. :)

Chickens are allowed in small numbers, but male chickens are a different story in many towns :(

That what I thought. I know roosters aren't allowed as far as I know but my friends next door neighbor had about 7(?) of them for years. Last year they got rid them and it was only because the people behind them kept complaining. But there was obviously more to it than that because everyone had a fenced in yard and how bothersome could a couple of fenced in hens be?!

Check our the Southington Zoning Regulations (online). Section 3, page 4 gives the specific requirements to keep chickens. It is legal here!

Thanks, I will!

I think I will still insulate windows all around the top should be ok

Beacon Falls folks... I was wondering about the chicken zoning regs in your area... there is an interesting property I am going to go look at there but I don't know much about the area. I don't even know if it has its own schools... my children are grown so that doesn't matter much... just need to know if its a chicken friendly zone or not.

I'm looking at the zoning restrictions on line and I see in section 6.1.3 "Carousel, roller coaster, whirligig, merry-go-round, Ferris wheel or similar amusement device" are forbidden. But I can't find chickens yet.

here it is:
8.8.2 No livestock shall be kept on a lot of less than five (5) acres and any building in which the
livestock or poultry are kept shall not extend within less than 150 feet of any property or street
line, except as follows:
8.8.2a Horses or ponies may be kept on a lot of less than five (5) acres provided that the lot
contains an area of not less than 40,000 square feet for each such animal and the total
number thereof does not exceed three (3); and
8.8.2b An aggregate of not more than 20 chickens or other poultry may be kept on any lot if
kept in a building or enclosure conforming to the setback requirements for buildings and
other structures.

I would agree with new chick about insulating I think the advantages are worth it especially when we have those winter winds kickin,as long as you have proper ventilation and it's also a good idea to put a few windows in it if building yourself, this allows alot of cross ventilation which keeps the chickens cooler during the summer.

I keep forgetting that since moving to NY from CT 4 years ago, you guys have gotten hit with snow a lot more than we have!

Anyone here know of anyone who has magpie ducks or ducklings for sale in CT? I'm going to be coming down there at the end of August and have been searching all over for a female magpie duck. I would be open to purchasing a couple of ducklings though if they are still too young to tell the gender. TIA!
