I want to get some guineas for tick control (o the joys of living in Connecticut). Each time I see some on Craigslist, they're quickly snapped up--local demand seems to outstrip supply for certain birds, (esp when they're free or at point-of-lay, lol). I'm kind of surprised there aren't more poultry breeders around here!
Anyway, does anyone know where I could get some guineas (at least 3-5) in time for spring in CT, maybe western Mass.? I may just end up having to order from a hatchery, but it seems none of them ship keets until May or June, and I understand that it is wise to confine them for ~6 weeks before letting them free-range about our field, if I ever want to see them again.
On the bright side: even if I have to wait well into spring for my tick hunters, I'd be able to order a wide assortment of colors, which while not a must, would definitely be nice.
Most of the hatcheries I've checked out have minimum orders of 25-30 keets, so if anyone would be interested in sharing a shipment in the near-ish future, it might save me the trouble of trying to unload a bunch of very vocal birds later on...as well as save me from the curiosity of wondering what they taste like--my French friend insists they are delicious.

For the rehoming of the roosters, Try posting on the new haven local craigslist..I had alot of interest generated from that one area when I was looking to adopt out my wheaten ameracuna roo.
Looking for guinea hens (keets),,check with Sanna in East Haddam at Ray of Light Farm. She has had them available before.

No. Pine needles are the key. They don't absorb water, it just runs through and the girls walk around on top and don't get muddy.
