Connecticut!

Hi Becky,

I just joined the SW Ct/westchester poultyr club but, haven't gone to any meetups yet? I've rescued so many birds over the years forgive me if I forget, my brain is scrambled lately with all the farm stuff! LOL

I'm going to slack off the rescues bc I've closed my flock due to I have Way Way too many chickens........

But, I've gotten 3 PM's already about butchering. Maybe I should do a demo at someones house and invite the ones who want to learn?

Anyway, if I did meet you where was this? Just so I don't rack my brain all night trying to figure it out!

Tx,
Beth

Its part of our lifestyle. My DH and I are farmers and we live off the land as much as possible. We like to know what goes into our food so we know what we are putting in our bodies. I didn't mean to offend

Hi Beth, not sure if you're the same Beth G. who was (is?) a member of the SW CT/Westchester poultry meet-up? If not, you can stop reading!

If so, you're the same Beth who took two of my little RIR hatchery pullets off my hands for me last spring. (thanks again!). Just wanted to say hi! I'm also interested in your above post. I have some adorable little cockerels from this spring's hatch and I doubt if I'll be able to find homes for all of them, but they are nice little guys from BYC breeders. I have 2 light sussex, 1 wheaten ameruacana, several marans, and several olive eggers (marans roo over lavendar ameraucana hens). I'd be happy to pay a fee for your instruction as well - I feel strongly about learning to take responsibility for my birds from start to finish, but it isn't easy finding someone with heart and knowledge to do the teaching. And if anyone out there is interested in any of my little guys, let me know!

Well, you can stop racking your brain, Beth. I just went back and checked my correspondence, and it was Sue G., not Beth G. who I met with! Man, I must be getting old!

In any case, I would definitely be interested if you do decide to do a group demo. Let me know. And maybe we'll meet up at one of the meet-ups!

No No No, my husband and I really only eat cornish meaties. I've never even thought or wanted to butcher a silkie for many reasons. One I've never looked at them as dinner, I've never had one attack me, and lastly that black skin would probably give me the creeps cooking it....sorry

Thank goodness you figured that out bc I went back in my log book and can't find the birds you were talking about and then wondered if I had this babies running around here and forgot about them?? Scary Thought ahhhh

The Chinese consider the black-skin of the Silkie chicken to have curative properties.

I have actually discussed it with Beth briefly, but I just don't think I could kill and eat something that was a pet/known animal. I would have to just provide very basic care and even then I just don't know if I could eat it or process it. Though I am not against it, cuz I am not a vegetarian in anyway.
That being said I love game dinners and FIL loves to hunt pheasant. I will try anything except rabbit (I had those as pets growing up so they aren't food to me) or squirrel (remind me of rats eeewww) at a game dinner.
Kudos to those who can grow and process their own. I just can't. But I have gotten dh to eat less meat.

Beth dh and I are so excited about the chicks, he wants to start building the coop this weekend. He is so disappointed that he has to wait cuz if the kids see a chicken coop or him building something he will give away the Easter surprise. He wants to come home early from Easter dinner to start the coop lol. It is too funny to see his ideas.
