Connecticut!

OK, so I think I've settled on 2 Easter Eggers, 2 barred rock, and maybe one of something else-a silkie? Bantams probably better than full size as the chicken tractor design my hubby has settled on isn't huge (but should be good for 5 birds even if full sized). that said-anyone have those chicks in my area - upper Fairfield county or thereabouts? And if not, any recommendations who to order from - I can't use a ton of chicks to meet the mail order quantities for most places

I'm not dead set on the breeds - but they'll mainly be pets, egg laying is secondary; I want birds that will be fairly calm and friendly, and (relatively) quiet (want to keep the neighbors friendly!). I like the colored eggs of the EE's (I think the kids would get a kick out of that) and the look of the barred rocks... growing up I had a very fluffy grey hen with feathered legs but no idea what she was!!
Thanks for the advice!

Hi Jen,

Inorder to get that variety of breeds at the same age of chick, I'm thinking My Pet Chicken or going to a MA show or swap.

For around here even My Pet Chicken has a minimum order, I think about 6. It's more if you order any bantams. Maybe you can find someone who wants to split an order with you. If you can't find anyone to split with you might find someone at the upcoming intro to chickens event at Ridgefield Library on June 12. Hope you stop in, love to meat new chicken people. I'll ask around for you too.

No actually I think they do ship as few as 5. My girlfriend in Southington bought 5 Buff Orp pullets from them last year. Only draw back is they charge extra for the express shipping.

Hi Beth, funny I was just looking at My Pet Chicken... I could get as few as 5 bantams; they'd run $10 each though, and the breeds I'd like aren't available until July! I may need to rethink .... if anyone here will have bantams chicks in the next week or so please let me know ... or maybe full size ... barred rock, buff brahma, easter eggers (or americaunas, not sure of the difference?) Planning on being at Tinman's chicken presentation on June 12th, just waiting for more info

I can help you with the silkie but, the thing is you need to get them all at the same age. If you try to intergrate at different age groups the older ones will definately pick on the little silkies

I personally keep my silkies, bantie cochins, and certain breeds separate. I have not had good luck with putting them together. I swear my LF chickens like to pick on top hats!!!

Yeah! Winsted/Barkhamsted!

Hi,

I was just in Winsted on Sunday!! My DH and I go up there to work on my atty's tractors all the time. On our way back I always beg to stop at the Tractor Supply store!! Love it but, I stay away this time of year with all those baby chicks there!!

Ya, I just checked and it looks like they changed it. Cool. There use to be a big complicated thing about how far from a major city you were, and the farther away the more you had to order, and bantams doubled it.
