Dear Santa,

I've been a good girl. Well, mostly good. At least good enough not to get moved over to the naughty list!
I hope you know a lot about chickens, if not, you should check out BackyardChickens.com during your summer vacation.

This is what I want for Christmas:

1. Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance EX incubator (I love my chickens!)
2. Silkies (preferably show or breeder quality!)
3. Seramas (preferably show or breeder quality!)
4. Orpingtons (Those blue ones are cool!)
5. Sebastapol Geese (I would like 1 gander and 2 goslings - love the pure white!)

P.S. If it's not too much trouble, can you get your elves to finish my chicken coop??? PLEASE???

P.S.S. You can bring my husband something nice too, for putting up with me and all my chickens!!!

P.S.S.S. Also bring my CT Chicken-Friends lots of healthy, happy chickens and may their coops always be big enough for their flocks!

Yours truly,
Dobieslady1

Hi everyone,
I hope everything is going well.
I have a quick question anyone else's chickens slow down on production the last couple of weeks? Only 3 of my girls are laying and the last 2.5 weeks I am only getting about 5 eggs a week. The hubby is going to put a light in the coop this weekend for a few hours a day.

I love that Santa letter.

It is very normal for them to drop off production when the daylight hours decrease and the cold nights set in. Be careful pushing them too much b/c they are young. I try not to push my pullets in their first year of laying b/c that can make them be more prone to become egg bound pushing them to maturity to fast

Best Wishes,
Beth

Beth thank you. I am figuring just an hour or so of extra light since umm I can't seem to get out to let them out until almost 8:00 every morning. I am trying to convince dh they need a skylight, but he isn't going for it.

LOL oh I see. Yeah if you get a light with a timer that may help. But, I wouldn't push em too much. I think again alot of it is they can't figure out these cold temps at night and warmer during the day deal. Doesn't help either that one day its like 40-50's then the next is 80's!!! Now the news is say high of 40's on Saturday with the possiblity of snow??????????

Hello, In lingo I guess I'm just hatched. This be my first post. My name is Jonathan and I'm from Mystic, CT. I am amazed how many Chickenites are in CT on this forum,,,something like 250 from the state and about 90 from Eastern CT.

Four ducks (1 female, 3 males) wandered onto my property late last spring. My wife took them under her wing and cares for them. I asked around and no one had a clue where they came from. They didn't have any common sense. They would wander into busy roads without a care in the world. I'm sure they would of meet a bad end if no one interveened. I'm still seeking the original owners. The female started laying. We incubated (badly) some of the eggs and eventually the female started to incubate the rest. None hatched all though one was developed that was removed from the nest by the female we persume.

I built a raccoon proof abode for them. Man can they make a mess of it overnight. Them dirty ducks. My wife deals with it though. It it must be love cuz they will never be dinner except over her dead body. The female was neat as a pin when she was incubating...now I think she is a little piggy! (Sorry to insult any pigs out there.) Life goes on.

Well having ducks wasn't enough! I talked up how much more practical chicken where, and I was right! I bought 7 Black Australorps. Mmmmm tasty....just kidding. One of them had an swollen crop that got cut open by the inner toe. About $700 later in vet bills she is doing fine. When I tell people how much we spent to save on chicken they look at me like I have lost my mind. I concure. It is a fact.

Life has changed. Besides having more duck and chicken eggs than we can use, we can't go anywhere. Must be home before twilight to put our feathered friends to bed. Trying to get the chickens in early aint easy. Come twilight they go in on there own. (The chickens are on the second floor of the "duck house".) They are all good birds, when they are sleeping and not hopping the fences.

Still worry about hawks. They fly over. The ducks are Very alert. The chickens and to a degree the ducks love cover and there is plenty for them. Even if I clear some trees for the garden I will always have something for them to get under. They do a good job of keeping what grass I have under control. I never used my lawn mower once this summer. They did a good job on the poison ivy and other undergrowth in the areas I don't mow. Thank you chickkoes. I hate poison ivy. My wife is hypersensive to it and usually get it bad every year. She just had a very mild case this year, even after carrying chickens that go right into it! I don't get it. I guess Murphy's Law has it's exceptions. Well enough boring drivle.

Last one to post is a rotten egg, oh wait, that's me!

Glad you made it to our forum!!!

Yes ducks are very very messy!!! Everyday I collect my eggs and have to scrub them right away.

I tried building them a duck house and making them nests but, they have mad the swamp their home and also worked the swamp to create this island where they sleep and lay eggs away from pred's and under cover of trees. They are very smart! I have chickens, quail, and turkeys. I just love my birds

I bought a timer at Job Lot over the weekend since dh already has the light unit and wiring. Yeah this weather is just crazy and I figured that with the less light is what is messing them up. I was getting about 15 eggs a week in September just from the 3. Yup I don't want to push them just gently nudge lol.
Now I am wondering when ee's usually start laying they are 29 and 25 weeks.

Rottenegg upi have a wonderful way with words. Welcome.
