 Wow your good waiting till June for your little chickies!!! But, that is a great time of year to get them

 

Ha. That's only because hubby was so darn particular about type and color of chicken, and that's the earliest the hatchery can satisfy his little self. He made an immediate transition from fluffy cats to fluffy chickens....he's just programmed to love fluff. In various colors. I swear, if human children were born with fluff he'd be all set.

Me, I would be satisfied with just about any little critter. But I must wait and live vicariously via BYC.

Beth, are your Silkies insulated in their coop or do they do OK just with ventilation and draft avoidance?

It's not necessary, but I think you just go wrong with insulation. I'd rather have insulation and great ventilation. Besides, it keeps the coop cooler in Summer as well.

I've found 3 near shelless eggs in the past couple of weeks. They have oyster shell free choice. I know they aren't getting the greens that they usually do, but could that be it? I'm not even sure who it is either.

Hello everyone!

I have been incubating some great quality sizzle and bantam sultan eggs.
Because they were shipped, i bought alot more then i needed, assuming they wouldn't all hatch, but it looks like they are all developing nicely.
So when they hatch on Feb 24th, i will be trying to sell some of the chicks.
If anyone is interested, please let me know.
I won't know how many that will hatch until they hatch out, so i can't promise any number of chicks just yet.
I try to keep a very bio-secure area and take many procedures to make sure our chickens don't get/carry any illnesses.
All eggs are tylan dipped previous to being incubated.
This is to prevent any illnesses that can be passed down from mother hen to egg (since i get these eggs from outside breeders and i don't know much about the health of their chickens, i like to take special precautions).
I will be selling the chicks for $4 each, straight run (since its impossible to sex them at them till they get older.)
If you would like to buy some of the chicks just pm me and i will keep you up to date how how many hatch!

My spouse is Abbie. She isnt a big poster in forums, I was going to let her introduce herself.

We have a good idea on what we want, just need to narrow it down to 10 birds.

So far some mixed flock containing: NH red, Barred rock, buff orphington, wayndotte, Ameraucanna, and perhaps a black giant and australorp too.

Hi, My silkies are in a barn with a rubber matting for flooring with heavy layer of wood shavings for bedding. My silkies only go out supervised due to hawk pred issues. So they are inside most of the time and take well to confinement. The one thing you are going to have to be cautious of with Silkies, Cochins, any breed with a heavy crest or foot feathering is mites an lice tend to find their way onto the bird. If you insult too well the moisture can build up in the coop and make it easy for the lice and mites to find your chickens. Also keep in mind silkies do not roost and need other silkies for silkie pile up at night in the corner to keep warm. My barn has venting at the top but, it is also 13 feet to the peak inside. Thanks for the heads up - I hadn't realized the feathered foot---mite connection. We're only getting 6 birds and likely a 4x6 or 5x6 coop, so hopefully there won't be too much build-up of moisture. We'll likely add ventiation to what it comes with, as it's pretty minimal on prefab coops.

I cannot wait to see the pileup of sleeping Silkies! I just hope they don't poop in the same corner they sleep in. Yeah, I know, they probably will.....
