Connecticut!

Hey everybody, I haven't been on in a while, a lot has been happening in the CT forum!
This past weekend was a very upsetting one at our household. All of my chickens except for 3 bantam hens and my blue cochin rooster were killed and eaten sometime on Friday night. I was on vacation with my best friend in New York and I came home exhausted from traveling and didn't think to check the coop since my family had told me that everything was all closed up. It turns out they all were locked out of the coop and something, I'm thinking a pack of coyotes, killed and ate my six laying hens and bantam rooster. There was only feathers left. I am absolutely devastated, those chickens weren't only layers they were my pets, as I'm sure most of you can relate to. They all had names, they all had personalities. I guess the moral of the story is make sure your chickens are tucked away safe at night! And make sure your coop and fencing is predator proof. I have never had a predator problem before, besides my neighbors dog who killed 3 of my chickens last year in the space of 5 minutes.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a good Memorial Day. :)

I would be devastated.

That sounds pretty good for 9 birds. You end up with about 3.3 ft^3 per bird inside the coop and just over 11 ft^3 per bird on in the run. The more room the happier the birds will be.

I aimed for about 4 ft^3 per bird inside the coop and 10 ft^3 per bird in the run with my design. I have 12 birds and that should be quite nice for them when they are full grown.
my husbandis building a 6x5 coop with a 10x10 run the coop will have 4to nesting boxes i have 9 chicks i hope that's
enough room....fingers crossed

So, while making the phone call to the Tolland post office to make sure we're all set for the MyPetChicken shipment, they assured me they do this all the time!

Now I'm wondering how many other stealth chickens are roaming Tolland backyards. I'll have to roam about on Google Earth and see if I can spot fat little chicken bodies walking around!

(Just kidding, we only stalk our own home to check out our landscaping progress :) )

On another note, I'm trying to set up a better composting system (a DIY tumbler) to prepare for a new Square-Foot-Garden style raised bed and to make use of our future chicken poo. Any of you happen to know where I could get a free 47-55 gallon plastic barrel, like the ones with screw-top lids sometimes used to ship food products? I tried calling some suggested places and had no luck. Haven't seen any on Craiglist either except for overly high prices. I hear you can get them at carwashes but I'm a little wary of the prior contents.
