Connecticut!

Hi Dynahoe Dave! That's the main reason I got my chickens for, to eat the bugs that eat me. We have seen fox and coyote in our area but no problems at this point in time (I've had them for about a year).

Have any luck with them eating the ticks?

My husband and I have both gotten Lyme disease while in CT, and while we've never sprayed for ticks we're getting to that desperation point. Our neighbors do all spray, so we're probably the tick oasis. They run for our yard! It doesn't help that we work in the yard and garden a LOT, so we get lots of exposure. Even taking off our yard clothes in the garage, checking ourselves, etc....we still get ticks in the house periodically. Just pulled one off my poor cat's eyelid today, two days after applying Frontline.

We're thinking of having a company like Tick-Be-Gone spray our yard....and we won't have chicks outside for a couple months....but do any of you have experience with tick spraying? Are there safe formulations so the chickens are OK if you just keep them in the coop/run for a day or so? I could ask for the MSDS sheets, etc. but I doubt they're very knowledgeable about effects on poultry.

Would love to get guineas (along with an emu, goats, an entire zoo) but need to buy that big parcel in Montana first. If only I'd won that big Lotto recently.

I hear they sometimes eat them, but really won't make much of a dent. Guineas seem to be the best, but come with a bit of a noise issue. I can't figure out how even the guineas get them - they're so small and they hide on plants.

The other issue is that our chickens will only free range maybe an hour a day when we're out watching, given that I'm not going to trap and kill the foxes and raccoons and other predators. The chicks won't have much tick-eradication time, but I want to make sure we don't poison them with anything in the yard.

We're right between 2 cities, but since moving to this location our lab (RIP), had the big dog ticks on him all the time and so did I. Last year I was looking at "natural" tick control and thought about getting Guinea Fowl also, but then I heard they were noisy, so I decided on chickens. I got my first 4 in June and it's been a lot better. I haven't seen any on me or our 2 new pups.

Should be ok to have a rooster here. 2 acre minimum lots, more spread out & rural than suburbs. There are only 2 houses within 1000' of mine.
And there is always egg bribery.
