Considering Quail - Predator Question

Quail are pickier than chickens, so I don't know if they are going to eat the bugs you want in the first place. They are also more fragile. I moved my predator proof pens from the city to the country and suddenly I have issues. I lost a couple to heart attacks last month when a raccoon jumped on the roof of their pen, so now they have a nice little electric fence.

Have you tried netting for SVB? You might find more advice in the "what did you do in the garden today" thread. I hear a lot of complaints about SVB.

I’m afraid of that being the case. Why I came her to ask before I just jumped into it. I actually don’t have a terrible SVB prob- it’s the squash bugs and cucumber beetles, and it’s been going on for 3 years now. Hens won’t touch the squash or cucumber beetles (but easily took care of japanese beetles). Netting and neem oil didn’t work last summer. I am so eager to find a natural balance in my garden but I am so far failing miserably!

I had similar squash bug problems and had minimal success until I discovered Tromboncino squash. Check them out. No vine borer problems. Can be eaten younger like yellow squash or grown to full size to store and be eaten like winter squash. I grow mine in my mini-orchard up a peach tree, so they take no additional garden space and start fruiting after the peaches are gone.

woah this might change my life! we eat zucchini and squash literally once a week year round. this variety has all the things! vining (chicken run shade!!!)! storage! squash bug resistance! THANK YOU for the tip!
