Considering raising my own chickens, and just moved to Alaska.

New to Wasilla, Alaska and I want to raise chickens and hopefully a duck or two. Chickens for eggs and ducks for "pet." I am trying to educate myself first and found this site. Your guidance and advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
You may want to subscribe to the "Alaska" thread on BYC. It's a great way to meet chicken folks in your area who may be able to mentor you . Yes, I've heard ducks are very messy birds to have around but, real comedians.

There is a very knowledgeable BYCer on the "Old Folks Home" thread user name "Alaskan." I believe he lives in Homer. If you go to that thread you will spot one of his posts. If you hover over his name - it will give you the chance to pick PM (private message) then ask any question you may have . ps The OFH thread is not limited to old people, there are a lot of young folks too. Extremely nice people there.

Welcome! Ducks are a lot messier I have read!

Get cold hardy breeds where the combs won't freeze as much would be my advice. There are different comb types:

The single comb, for example, is more likely to freeze and get frostbite (turn black and fall off) than the cushion comb or pea comb.

However, if you choose single combs - you may be able to protect them from frostbite by keeping the conditions of the coop just right- not sure how cold it gets where you are.
