Consolidated Kansas

I grew up in Wichita and I can remember about three years in a row where there were bad blizzards. The Snow Emergency Routes came about after the first one. Of course school was out but we made our way to downtown to see the 30 foot drifts,

Gonna have to get some regular oatmeal in bulk for the girls now..............Can't believe I'm gonna 'cook' for my chooks!

Hi Kansans,

In Lincoln Nebraska here but hail from Concordia when I was a little fart.

I miss Kansas and I think our winters our even a bit more brutal than yours. I keep wishing to move back south to Kansas!

I remember some really bad years for snow. Lots of people were stranded that lived in the country. Roads would drift shut as soon as they got them open. One winter was super cold also.

I also remember some mild winters and each fall hope the upcoming winter will be mild and not severe. Wonder what this one will be like?

Have you ever tried to cook oatmeal overnight in a thermos? I haven't but I hear it works great and is ready in the morning. That might work for the chook food also? Get all of the ingredients up to boil and remove from heat and cover with something to keep the heat in and in the morning it should be ready to feed. I think I will try it.

Microwave!! But then I only have 4 hens. They're pretty happy with warm oatmeal and plain yogurt. Even learned how to make my own yogurt ... the things we do for these guys!

This morning I got out the salmon the store had on clearance for a buck (too old for a human to consume) from the freeze, put it in my cast iron pot, put in 2 cups of brown rice, water, leftover broccoli, peas and veggie lasagna, and put it in the oven for an hour at 300. At an hour I come back, turn off the oven, and leave it until it's just warm.

This is chook bliss. They will purr at my feet when I feed them this stuff. Funny things!!

The roo practically sings when I put it in front of him to announce dinner to the girls!

Don't you just love it when they are happy to see what treats you are bringing? I have been making sure that they have lots of corn to help em stay warm.
