Consolidated Kansas

Hawkeye has inspired me to get started on building my coop. Nice weather has helped too. Don't have any plans other than an image in my head of how I want the coop to look. So far things are coming right along. Here's a short photo update on my progress.

Friday evening (3/16)
Left work & decided to take advantage of the extra daylight we're getting now. Started working on the floor of the coop. My goal was to build it, get it to the site & get it leveled before dark.

Wife came out to take pictures before I got the flooring put down. By the time I was done it was too dark to take pictures. Originally, I was going to put the coop behind the garage. Then I decided I wanted to be able to see if from the house. So, it's on the other side of the yard where I can see if from the kitchen & bedroom.

Saturday (3/17)
Didn't really get anything done on the coop today. Good thing too. My back was killing me from what I had done the evening before. I needed a break. So, I took my daughter car shopping instead. We ended up buying her a new car (2009 Dodge Caliber) which took most of the afternoon. Then, it was off to my mom's house for St Patty's Day dinner. Corned beef & cabbage; just can't turn that down.

Sunday (3/18)
Woke up this morning ready & eager to get started on my coop. Started around 10:00am (figured the neighbors would be up by now). Worked until around noon & took a lunch break to eat a sandwich & chat with the neighbor who came over to see what I was doing. Was able to frame up 3 of the 4 walls of the coop.

From this view you can just make out the 'pop' door on the back wall. Nest boxes are on the west wall of the coop. Decided to build 4 nest boxes even though I probably only need 3 for the size of my flock of 12 birds. Still have to frame up the 2 window openings on the east wall & 2 on the west. Decided to wait until I found windows that would work. Found some small 12"x18" shed windows on eBay which I promptly ordered. They should be here by the middle of the week. Worked pretty much straight thru the afternoon with a break at noon . Ran out of screws shortly after 5:00pm so I decided I had done enough for the day. Cleaned things up & put the tools away. Here's where I ended up.

Framing up the gambrel roof trusses took a good 2-3 hours, but it was worth it. I love the look & I can stand up inside the coop. Still need to frame in the north & south end walls, but that will most likely have to wait until next weekend. Will need to make another trip to Home Depot to pick up some more materials; roof sheathing, shingles, trim, etc.

That's all for now. Need to go take another round of Advil. Pretty stiff & sore this evening. Just not use to manual labor I guess.
Hope everyone has a good week!

That looks great!! You made a lot of progress in just a couple days.

Danz, so sorry about your SIL's comment. My Dad and his wife aren't exactly beaming over my chickens, either, so I understand how crappy it can make you feel. Especially in your situation when you are terribly stressed already with making huge decisions for your Mom and Dad. Keep in mind that when everyone is under extraordinary stress they say and do extraordinary things, good and bad. Closing the door on the cats and opening the house to your parents looks like a good solution. Unless the chickens live immediately outside your Mom's bedroom window that is kept open, I hardly think it's possible for the chicken dust to make things worse for her. Chin up, girl, your job is to survive this ordeal, first, and make the very best decisions you can for your parents and your family. You are already doing those things admirably. You'll get this right, don't let SIL's comments get you down.

I've had a lot of completely inconsiderate, rude, stupid things said to me over the last year and some from people I actually like and think of as intelligent, normal, pleasant people. I've started calling them their blond moments and just moving on. Her timing really sucked though with everything else.

Geez. I'm so inspired to get outside and get working looking at all the great pics. At kids activities today and for the next week so weather should be gorgeous. You'll know when I'm not busy. It'll start pouring or sleeting or something.

Here's the bucket/nipple waterer on the cookie tin heater I couldn't figure out how to post way back when. Worked fine after I got rid of the Thermocube.

Danz-.....No words, just

Sounds like you will have some pretty peacocks! I wanted to get some this year, but I think it's going to have to wait until next year. Just too much I've got to get done around here before I can even think about more birds! LOL

WichitaKidd- Your coop is AWESOME! Wish I could've gotten that much done this weekend. What are those blocks you have the floor sitting on? I NEED some of those!

averytds- I want to make something similar, but I was thinking of putting the nipples around the bottom of the sides of the bucket, facing out, instead of down. Do you suppose it still would work? Or do they have to face down to work?

I think the ducklings I got from TSC in McPherson the other day might be Pekins. I sure hope so, what a lucky stroke that would be for me!
On the chicks, I held everyone of them on their backs and only two struggled, but just for a few seconds. SO according to the old farmer's chick sex test, I may have 2 BR hens, 1 BR roo, 3 Bantum hens and 1 Bantum roo. Works for me if it's true! Three of the banties are Cochins, the 4th, I'm not sure. It's clean-legged and has a wide brown stripe down its back with a brown pinstripe running down each side of the wider stripe.
My, oh my...I have 37 chicks coming in the next 2-4 days @.@ Yep, chicken math is catching up with me, but it's all good ^_^

Ditto on the flowers. They are def. not a weed. One other thing I noticed in your pics. Is that cedar shavings you have them on? If so, you will want to switch them over to pine. The cedar is toxic.

YES. The 1st bag we got was a mix of maybe 35% cedar. I read that it may pose a problem the other day so I went to get a version of 100% pine. Currently there is less than 5% cedar in total. It may look like more but it kinda sticks out. You know, the manager of the store was the one who recommended the mixed bag in the 1st place and it was right there on sale and next to all the other 'ChickStarter' items. Just goes to show you never know what people know. The funny thing when i went into Orscheln's to get the pine, a young man said, "Oh you should never have any birds directly on shavings by the way." I told him thank you and just shook my head. Thank goodness for the BYC.
