Consolidated Kansas

rvroman, I sent you a PM, check your messages box.

Danz, that sounds awesome if your DH would build you another brooder box, then you wouldn't have to have your chicks so crowded, I would take him up on it if I were you. I know there are other things you want done, but maybe if he gets that done it will inspire him to work on other stuff. I just drew up some sketches of what I'm wanting with my breeder coop & showed my DH today. He looked at it & said it was bigger than he expected it to be. Oh really? I don't know what he was expecting, but I still don't think he quite gets what I'm trying to do. I think he thinks this is just another general coop. It's hard to get him to understand what I'm trying to tell him, sometimes it's like he's on another planet!

I candled my eggs in the bator today that I was questioning & had to take about 5 out that I don't think are developing, so I hope I can get more to replace them. Unfortunately all of the ones I had to take out were Ameraucana eggs. I have had about half of the ones I put in end up developing.

What a lousy drippy day. I sunk to the top of my boots in the guinea pen. Those poor birds out there!
Congratulations! Hawkeye!
It's big time chicken math now!!!!
Ivy or anyone else that has raised Peafowl. My young peacock was displaying for his lady this morning. I was told they wouldn't lay until they are 3 years old. If they can't lay why are they displaying? Just curious.

I missed this before, Verna!

The male will display right away, and you'll even see the female displaying occasionally. Some hens will lay her second spring, but most wait until they're 3. The male can mate his second year, but isn't as likely if an older male is around, which is where my Purple cock is, now- and the older male is 5, so he's got an enormous train and is very regal, so the younger fellow just practices for the hens bashfully.

My older hen hasn't lay for me yet this year, and she laid many eggs last year, so I'm still waiting!! The younger hen won't lay until next year, as she's 2 in June.

I've got the geese in a fenced area that has limited hidey spots, and I'll keep my eyes open for disturbed areas, I'm not watching all day, but I imagine they're just as easily disturbed and temporarily stalled as chickens, so having just moved won't help. Patience! Does a female make that sort of high-pitched blast? I've heard many sounds out of them, including little high-pitched whines, chuckles, etc, but there is very little difference in the sounds, too...so it's two of some gender, I imagine.

Perhaps I'll look for videos on YouTube!

I hear you on that Danz, we're gonna have to go with a regular old chain link fence. Those white ones that come in panels are so nice, but the cost almost made me faint and I don't have near as much to fence as you. I guess I will just be happy if it keeps kids, dog, and chickens in. Interestingly though, there's a house a few streets down from me that has 5 chickens free range in their yard and doesn't have an enclosed fence. They do not seem to wander off which amazes me to no end.

We fence to keep intruders out more than to keep the girls in. we have coyotes and dogs that run loose all over area.

Got the garden almost all filled with dirt, my own mix in some and miracle grow in some. Cant wait to go plant stuff with the boys in the morning. We also had to get fencing to put around the garden because my ding-dong doggies keep digging, laying in and eating our dirt!

Theresa, I got your message I will respond once I get a chance to sit for longer than 5 minutes.

ok guys, what do you think, is lillith maybe a leroy??? That comb seems rather large for a 1-3 week old chick, age unknown, pretty sure she (he?) is about 2ish weeks though.

RV, yes Lillith could be a Leroy. Unless she is a Wyandotte. They have very large combs.
Cherwill I can tell on some breeds that early. If they are a breed with a pea comb the girls will look very smooth and the boys will start getting the little raised jagged edge look to their combs. If you have a few of the same breed, boys will get taller and leggier and their tail feathers will initially be shorter than a girl's. Watch how they act as well. The boys are usually more fiesty.
Much of knowing which is which is by breed. Are you wanting to sex a particular breed?

I would say you have a Leroy based on comb color as much as comb size (although color can be deceptive when flash is used but if it is as pink as it looks....) Also, the thickness of the legs and size of feet whisper "boy" to me. I can't remember - did you get sexed pullets or straight run?

Thought I'd share this cuteness:

Onyx, my BR, has found the joy of flying onto our arms as soon as the brooder is open. It's so cute. She'll immediately fly onto an extended arm or shoulder, if it's available. I hope this means that she'll be that tame when as she gets older!

Here I am holding pearl for the nightly photo shoot and Onxy decided that she was the one that should have been up there as well!

Danz, I'm trying to sex my Ameraucanas. One bird, the one who is usually very friendly and comes to me first, has a slightly larger comb and it's starting to turn red. The others aren't. I guess that one bird could be a little older, though we got them all at the same time. This is the best picture I could get today, but you can see that bird's comb on the left. I'll try to get better pictures tomorrow if that will help.
