Consolidated Kansas

I'm sick to my stomach because my Black silkie hen is trying to go broody and she started to pluck herself!! I got her in time and stuck her outside in the cool temps with Zorro and he's keeping her on her toes right now. But wow-- She'll probably keep trying. I am going to cry if she plucks out all of her beautiful chest feathers and fluffs out and sits in a corner.

She and Zorro (and Seymore--maybe) are going to the Emporia show on Saturday! What a mess!!

I
When I used to work at the shelter, we sent all the animals home with this big cone around their necks so they wouldn't mess with the stitches. I've never seen any chicken sized ones though. Perhaps you could fashion one out of a red solo cup or something ?

Here's my new coop! Yay!! We are done!!

First, we built the two rabbit hutches that we were going to put together. We removed the connecting walls to put them together. We also decided to cover up most of the screen, leaving a strip for ventilation. The far end also has the same drop down ramp, but that end is going to be the nesting box and I will use the ramp door as my collection door. The roofs also open up for easy access, as well as the trays slide out for cleaning! Added a roost bar the full length as well. The roof is asphalt, so it'll be good in the weather.
Here they are before they are attached:

Here is the finished product:

New we will drag it out to the run area, and add in bedding. Tomorrow's plan is to build the 10x10 kennel run and then the fencing for the outside 20x20 run. I hope the rain stops early!

Tweety- Very cute, love the custom front covers you made!!

Trish- I think Molly went down the road to check the neighbors cattle (not that she really needs to be doing that) and would up fenced into their night time dry lot. The guy up the street said he lost a newborn calf to a pack of coyotes a few nights ago so I wonder if she didn't know that something was up and the other night she was sitting in front of the house howling. She is staying penned up with the goats for a while til I am sure she knows to hang around. We may have to fence the front yard to keep her from going down the road. Don't know how we will afford that....

Candace-Glad you're back, now listen to your doctor! That is some scary stuff!

Josie-YAY!!! So glad you found Molly

Karen-I had one of those boots last year, hated it, but I got better a lot faster.

Sounds like this weather kept a lot of us from projects today. I didn't get anything done on the coop or the garden today either; very frustrating. I know the chickens are really ready for their new home. The temporary housing is not to their liking, but at least they can get out of the rain. Tomorrow, if the weather doesn't cooperate, I'm just going to have to pull the Blazer out of the garage and build in there. I'm so far behind.

I collected eggs out of the dog house this morning and about knocked my SLW roo sideways. He didn't like my boots, lol.

My SLW chicks came in today, so popped them in the brooder in the house. In a couple of weeks I will be getting 3 Yoko/Phoenix cross chicks, I'm excited about that! I put 4 more eggs in the new incubator, since I have it running anyway. Hopefully at least these might hatch. Still hoping the ones I tried to save are still going to hatch, but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway, time for bed. Stay dry everyone. Here's hoping tomorrow is a better day for all of us!

Also, forgot to ask-what is the difference between the ACV for horses and what is in the grocery store? I didn't even know they sold any specifically for horses.

Josie I am so glad you found your dog. She was obviously just trying to do her job but doesn't know her boundaries yet.
Trish, Karen isn't coming here. I'm driving to Emporia to meet her.
Hawkeye because of my crazy schedule I don't know if I'll be able to make it to Emporia again on Saturday or not. I have two trips to make today, Then tomorrow I have to make a trip to Iola to make a chicken exchange and pick up some fencing. My schedule is just crazy. I really want to meet you but it just might not work. Can you pm me your cell number so I can call you if I make it there? I am actually getting the midget white eggs and going to try to hatch my own turkeys. So it will be a while before I actually have them. That's a benefit though because it gives me more time to prepare a pen and housing.
Krissy, love you coop idea. If it were me I'd put some Thompsons Water seal on that so it would stay pretty.
Candace hope you get to feeling better and get back to normal.
I've got lots of eggs hatching right now for my Easter chicks. Not that I need any more chicks. I was sure hoping the chick market would be better this spring. Looks like a whole new batch of chicks and ducks both. Many have pipped and I hear a lot of cheeping in the incubator. I timed them so they would hatch between today and Saturday.
Sapphire blue I believe the difference in ACV for horses and humans is that the horse ACV isn't pasteurized so the mother is still in it. Don't quote me on that.

Thanks goodness. I worried about her all day yesterday Sharol
Found her!!!!!! :celebrate :woot :ya :weee Phew, right? I put up posters this morning on my way to class at all the intersections I thought she may have traveled past and while I was in class this afternoon I a guy called to say he had seen her up the road inside a cattle pen next to a vacant house. I called him back he said he and his buddy were driving by and saw my poster and they were talking about it, then they saw another poster and were probably talking about how crazy I was with my bright green posters about my lost dog when his buddy said "hey, that looks like a pyrenees right there in that cattle pen!!" So they turned around and drove up the driveway and saw her purple collar and knew it must be the right dog. So he turned around and called my number on the poster. So I got home tonight and stopped by and nobody was home at the house next door. I couldn't find a way into that **** pen to save my life! I don't know how she got in there but it took me twenty minutes of walking around to find a place where there wasn't thirty pieces of fencing or hotwire. Finally found a functional gate and released her. Must admit she looked very happy to see me and kind of sheepishly embarassed. Boy was she hungry!! Back in the pen with the goats and Bendy is driving her nuts now, guess he thinks he can pick on her now that he has decided she is no longer scary!

Josie - so glad Molly is home and your story ends happily!

Tweety - you did an awesome job on that coop. When you were describing it, I couldn't picture what you meant but love how it came out. The boards in front match the rest of the hutch perfectly and I love the artistic work on the front - did those come off feed bags?

Candace - scary. You need to take it easy!

Karen - glad the boot allows you to go downstairs and see the chicks again. I know how I would hate to not be able to visit with mine.

Not much happening here - just trying to survive the weeks with our hectic schedules so I can get work done at the new house on weekends. I seem to have so little computer time these days that I get to check in and there are pages and pages to read each time!

Oh - on the ACV, whoever was asking about that. You want the one that says it has "the mother" in it - that is the only kind that is beneficial. I get it at our local Dillons store, right on the shelf with the rest of the vinegars. In some stores you will need to look in the health food section and before our Dillons carried it, I used to go to Whole Foods or Natural Grocers to get it.

Thanks everyone. I think she must have wandered in there and laid down to take an afternoon nap and they bring their cattle up at night and shut them in the dry lot then let them out in the morning and close the gate so I think someone shut her in there by accident or else she wouldn't come out and they just closed the gate. Who knows? Silly girl scared me half to death. I laid in bed all night imagining all the awful things that may have happened to her. Thank you all for encouraging me to put up posters, if I hadn't I don't know when I would have found her. I think she would have come home if she could have found a way out of the pen. She looked at me when I pulled up the drive and she knew it was me because she didn't bark at my jeep and then she wagged her tail a bit real low with her head kind of down like she was saying "oops, meant to be gone for only a half hour yesterday, you were never supposed to know I had left..."

Candace- Glad you are feeling better enough to be on the computer. Take it easy and don't over do it, I know it is difficult to do when you are a hard working, busy person.

Someone had some awesome square foot gardens and had to build a fence to keep the dogs out? Those look great!

Remember some GP's will claim a mile square area as theirs. If the your neighbor has trouble, Molly very well may have been checking out the coyote trails, and followed the trail over to where the cattle are kept at night. Who knows, but Molly!!! Glad you found her, and I would make sure all of the people around you knows where she belongs, and make sure they under stand that she will not hurt the cattle or calves. We lost our Dudley to a stupid guy because he was protecting his cattle, and he shot him.

Ivy update.
Just talked to her, and she was headed to PT. Sounds great, her two sons came and seen her yesterday evening, so she was is super spirits. She thinks that she will go home sometime today, so hopefully she will get back on here. But sounds like she is doing VERY WELL with her new knee.

I know she is going to get her incubator filled up, and get to hatching more eggs. I would like to, but so many people are hatching around here, kinda seems useless. Lots of people just want the mugaldy-dun chicks, and I don't hatch those breeds. If they aint pure, or a planned cross, I don't hatch. Better go. Hope all is well.

JOSIE--you will get used to Molly don't worry too much, they usually know where home is , and I think she knows that now.
Hawyeye-- Going to Emporia?
Trish-- nice car, looks cool, just cant see me driving a car again.
Danz-- great you are selling some birds. Enjoy the space till you fill back up again.
Tweety nice coops---
And to all others, been reading, but if I don't take notes, I cant' remember who all was or is doing what
