Consolidated Kansas

Renee thanks for you informative artical. I know I am glad your on the Kansas team. You have a great skill in writing, and your interist in chickens means we win. Now I am a biologist and chemist and I will have to read it twice to fully understand it. Still I am glad to have your input.
After some warm weather and now some cold weather on the way, I am wondering what stresses reduce the production of our girls. Now we have been talking disease. In short what can we do to reduce stress from disease to increase egg production?
Prevention seems to be the answer. What vacinations are at least a should! for new chicks?
What vacinations can we do for older birds?
Any one that has ideas I welcome.

I found one at Orscheln's in Topeka and bought it a few weeks back, but I'm afraid the parameters are too high. 45 degrees is going to be higher than I want to keep the coop (I think). We shall see. I may put a small red heatlamp plugged into it toward the corner over the water just to see how it works.

Not sure how well this would work for me. The oulet/thermostat would be in one place and the heating element in another.

The rain appears to have stopped for now. Coyotes are hungry. I've seen several out in the cornfield at 500 yard to 1/2 mile away. They are looking for food.

Make sure your birds/livestock are safe!

We had one (coyote) up against our south fence (on the pasture side) this morning about 5 and at least 3 more just out of flashlight range. It completely freaked out the dogs. The one at the fence was less than 100 feet from the house and 20 feet from the secure coop. I really like my chain link yard fence ;-).

I am in real need to get my little flock thinned soon. I simply have too many for my coop during the winter months. I may need to thin more than I'm planning to. I have 4 RIR pullets, one NHR pullet and a partridge cochin roo. My granddaughters and I raised the girls from day old chicks with lots of love and attention. I got them the 14th of May and bought the little guy (at 7 wks) in June, I think. I'm selling the cochin roo because my BA girl turned out to be a roo and I don't want two roos in the coop. I'd LIKE to get $12 for each of the girls and $8 for the roo. I am located near Princeton, KS. I also have to say that my birds have started to moult so they aren't as totally lovely as they were a couple weeks ago, but that shall pass. Of my 25 girls I am getting up to 21 eggs a day, so I'm fairly certain that all my slower maturing girls aren't laying yet. They are the ones I want to sell. My thinking being that they aren't settled in laying here yet, but are used to being in a coop where the ladies all deposit their lovely eggs in the cozy nest boxes. They are enclosed in a nice fenced/covered run during the day and let run for an hour and half or so in the early evening then return to the coop to roost.

If anyone is interested please contact me. If one individual buys all my girls and is interested in the little dude I'd be willing to throw him in at no charge. I really hope I don't have to resort to having them butchered. I don't think I could cook and eat them when that wasn't my purpose in having chickens. They're lovely birds, aside from their bare places. They are very well loved. I hate to have to part with any of them and hope someone who'll care for them as I have will want to add to their flock. I've been using DE in their nest boxes, floor litter and their feed. I haven't had ANY problems with these birds.

Okay - so thought I'd throw out a date, time, and place for any BYCers in Kansas to join for coffee/soda/whatever at Mcd's - Saturday at 10:00 a.m. - the McDonalds on West Kellogg & Dugan street - near the Walmart. I will be in the play place with my bratty 4 year old - would love to sit and chat with folks that won't roll their eyes when I talk about my girls. Bring pics of your poultry, coops, etc so we can all see em... or bring your phone and we'll pass em around lol

Hope to see some of you there...
