Consolidated Kansas

It is my understanding that you have to administer the vaccine within 2 days of hatch (not sure, though).

Is there a place that carrys a vaccin. I have been thinking about treating my birds for the winter i want to prevent any problems.

I am wondering if I should vacinate my adult birds and the same dose works? I think now its a good idea to invest in the vacination for any chick ordered.
What I read is that you have to use it right away after you mix it. I think it best to let the hatchery do that. No waste on my end.
Now what other diseases may be present in Kansas?

I would just like to make sure they are all healthy for winter. Which this reminds me I think I will call Stombergs where I got my babies from and ask them if they were treated before the were shipped.

Even wild birds can carry it, so unless your pens are such that not even a sparrow can enter them there really is no way to completely avoid it. I too don't bring any new birds past day olds (and rarely those anymore) onto my place. I rarely have a sick bird, but when I do they are culled.

If anyone of you hatching experts comes up with some barred rock or buff chicks long about march - let me know - would love to purchase them.

I may get lucky and have a broody again in spring - since i stopped my other one who was trying ... but am hoping that the ones that hatch are my golden comet girls - cause they are so darned sweet

I may be looking too. I have a Golden Comet and she is a sweet bird. I get the impression when I let them out that she is "acting" like she is trying to sneak by but will walk slow enough that I might pick her up. If I do pick up a different chicken she will stop and look at me like "Why did you pick up her instead of me?"

I do think Katy was right on with the Mereks. My chickens not favoring any one leg, both legs are very weak. I have to hold her up for her to eat/drink. She can't stay balanced. This morning she was leaning against the side of the box (in my garage)with both feet out to her side. She looks like she is melting.. just spreading out like a big, feathery pancake with a neck and head on top.

I think next time I purchase chickens will be vaccinated chicks. It is heartbreaking to see her struggle but I have read the paralysis can be transient and clear up after a few days. So I am doing what I can and hoping it is in her best interest. I fear my other americana is at risk. The gold comet is older and laying so she may have immunity.

I put my sick chicken down today. She was basically paralyzed from the neck down. She could only eat or drink if I held her up by the feeder/waterer. I took my coop apart and with the help of Kansas 40 mph winds and my leaf blower it is pretty clean. I have destroyed the box and bedding where I tried to nurse her to health. First one turns into a roo and then this. My little flock is nearly gone.

Ya know, the law of chicken math states every loss must be replaced by at least double.
