Consolidated Kansas

WichitaKidd, uh oh! Sorry about your rooster! That is a real bummer. I'm so glad Wichita even allows chickens, but it is a bummer that roosters are not allowed. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal. I LOVE hearing my roos. How is your nest box holding up? We got a pretty decent rain last night.
Nest box is doing much better. Still have a small leak in one of the end boxes when we get a lot of rain. Otherwise it's staying pretty dry. I installed a piece of rubber garage door gasket over the gap where the hinges were. The gasket is held in place with aluminum carpet transition strips. Then I caulked around everything. I think I'm going to pull the strips off & caulk underneath them as well just in case that's where my leak is. Can't hurt anyway. You can never have too much caulk right? I've also decided that part of the problem is the slope of the nest box roof. Mine is only at 10 degrees, but in retrospect I should have made it at least 30 degrees or more. My thinking is that the steeper angle would deflect the water away faster. Most every picture I've seen online of external nest boxes have fairly pitched roofs. Have to remember that for when I build coop 2.

As for my little roo. Pretty sure it's one of my Australorps. I have 2 of them that are about 10 weeks old. One of them is noticebly larger than the other, has longer tail feathers, & larger comb.

I'm hoping my other Australorp (background) is a hen. The way my luck is going it's probably a roo too. Heck, they may all be roos as far as I know.
Anyway, once I know for sure which one is crowing I'll be looking to get rid of him. He'd be free to anyone on this list who would want to have him & can take him.

Will keep everyone posted. Hope everyone has a good week.

WichitaKidd, have you actually seen one of these Australorps crow? Those two look like my Australorp hens.

Hawkeye, well I finally had time to candle the eggs I put in the hatcher & I actually did see movement in quite a few of them, I was really shocked, so I will leave them for a couple of days & see what happens. Has anybody had eggs go beyond the hatch date by several days & still had chicks hatch? Unfortunately the ones I saw the most movement in are the sex link eggs I got from the guy I got my turkey eggs from, but I'm just going to leave all of my Ameraucana & EE eggs in there for awhile too. We're talking about 30 eggs here, so that's quite a few to mess up, a lesson to me to watch my dates closer.

The last 3 Easter Egger chicks just left a few minutes ago, the guy forgot he was supposed to come get them, so he sent his grandmother to come get them. I guess at least someone came, that was the important thing. I was glad to get them out of that brooder, they were getting big.

Wichitakid-The black australorp in the foreground is a cockerell. See the little pointy feathers just ahead of the tail? Those are rooster feathers.

Your two buff colored ones definitely look like pullets to me. The black one in the back ground is kind of harder to tell, but from what I can see looks like a pullet.

Ivy, sent you a text. The hens are in the pen now and eating like pigs. They thought they were starved after the road trip.
I just have to share my joy! One of my Mandarin hens hatched out 5 babies this morning. Now I've got to decide whether to pull them or leave them with her.
Long day. I am beat.

My mother created a game she called road side pool. You watched carefully, and each unusual thing you saw was worth points. A windmill was 50, a red tractor 25, a white horse 100 (for instance). Not only did it keep me from nagging "are we there yet" it helped me hone my math skills (no calculators in 1954). You can make up the rules as you go -- first person to see the object gets the points. You can do something with license tags, too. Look for letters that spell out words. Pick a long word and look for license tags that contain the letters (either in order or like hangman.)

Hawkeye, what a cutie, congrats again! Yeah, I don't hold out a lot of hope for the eggs in the hatcher, they're overdue, but we'll see.

Yeah, I'm glad my granddaughter is going to get her tooth fixed, it really is broken bad. She really needs braces, but I don't think either her mom or dad can afford them. Anybody got any ideas on keeping a 7 year old happy in the car for over 2 hours, she doesn't do very well riding very far, she gets bored.

Well I have someone coming to get these chicks, so I had better get ready for them. I have to work on my original brooder after the chicks are gone, it needs some revising.

David, I agree that BA in the foreground is your culprit. Both the tail and the saddle feathers (the pointy ones in front of the tail) are a give-away. Most of mine have waited to between 16-18 weeks to crow for the first time but I currently have a little 9-10 week old Cochin roo who is crowing and it is the cutest thing. There is a little birdcage in the chick run and every morning around 6:15 he gets up on his birdcage and crows a half dozen times and then he's done for the day. He's such a little guy that its a very little sound and I doubt if anyone in the neighborhood is even aware of it. The silkies join him but usually one do it once or twice and theirs isn't very loud either. Even if my windows are open, it isn't loud enough to wake me up so I only hear it if I'm already awake and in the living room at the time.

I forget - did you get these sexed or straight run?

AAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAH!!!! I passed my Pathophysiology final and class!!! That was the only one I was really worried about.

Not sure what the deal was with the eggs yesterday, but today all five were there

Maybe the hens didn't lay yesterday or if Sarge did eat them, it was a one time deal? I dunno, just glad I had eggs today, lol.

Glad Lawrence is going to be taking a look into that.

....I read a lot of posts and now CRS...

Anyway, have a great night all
