Consolidated Kansas

Hi, Just found this thread for Kansas. I live about 30 minutes south of Topeka. After a hiatus of about 20 years I finally got some more chickens, guineas and 2 ducks last summer. I had a tick disease and was in the hospital for 4 days last June so it was time to get more guineas!! We live on a farm so we free range our birds most of the time. I love chickens which is why I didn't stop after I got the guineas -- just saw some chickens and couldn't help myself. Then I saw a couple of cute Ancona ducks and hubby likes them too! Just recently bought a Cornish banty hen in hopes that she will go broody and hatch out some guinea eggs for me.

Look forward to meeting you all,
Kare
Kare, I think I know you! If you are who I think you are you got your guineas from me last year. I have babies again this year if you need to stock up and lots of ducks too. Welcome!

I went out & caught all of the little chicks I just hatched in the last few days to count how many of each I had & I somehow ended up with 6 Ameraucanas & 6 sexlink/mixes or whatever you want to call them. HeChicken, it is kind of weird though because some of them have white wingtips & some don't, so I don't know if that is indicative of sex or not. I know usually one has a white spot on the head, I think the males & the females are all black if I have that right. But with these there are some all black & some with the white wing tips. I'm excited about my other turkey eggs due to go in the hatcher next week from that guy we got eggs from. How are yours doing? I don't plan to candle mine until Tues.when I put them in the hatcher. They go in on the 25th day right? It's kind of different, I'm used to hatching chicken eggs.
That is really interesting about the wing tips. I'd love to hear if that ends up being an indicator of gender later on. Since they change so fast as they're growing out, is there a way you can identify them now (zip ties or something) so that as they grow up you will be able to tell if the wing tips were a factor or just a coincidence?

I must admit, I've lost my enthusiasm for my turkeys

I'm glad you're still feeling excited and I hope I can get there again too when it gets closer. After so many of them being infertile and only having two developing, it just seems like it would be hoping for too much that both go all the way to hatch, so I've find of "emotionally withdrawn" from them, I guess. I still turn them (manually) regularly but other than that I'm paying almost NO attention to them. Mine don't go into lockdown until 3 days after yours. They are due to be candled again this evening so I'll check their air cells then. I'll be very interested to hear how yours do on hatch and especially after hatch.

Morning all and Happy Mother's day to all of you who are Moms.

It's going to be a busy day for most of us I am sure.
I got the wire up on one side and mostly up on the other side of the first pen for the Peafowl late yesterday. I finally couldn't drag myself any further. Maybe today I will find time to finish that. DH still needs to put top and bottom boards on the end and make the gate. He insists on doing that himself. Wish me luck that we get it done and I can finally move the peafowl. I'm not holding my breath. I watched him yesterday. While I put up an entire side of wire he stood there and watched doing nothing. That is exactly why he never gets anything done. It's no wonder he gets so tired. I would be exhausted just standing there. He's always been that way so I guess I'm used to it. I get so uptight trying to work with him though because I am a rush rush kind of person.
Once I get the wire up I am going to have to start working on the top netting. It would be so much easier if the whole pens were done because I refuse to cut it. So I guess I'll just attache it to this pen and hope it is large enough to do the whole pen. I haven't measured that roll but I don't think I've used all that much of it.
Well gotta get moving.

Welcome to the Kansas thread, Kare!! We love having new people show up!

Well today we got 2 sides on the coop of the paneling we are using for the outside. We have lived here for 6 years now and I just found out we have mulberry trees.

OHand Helen Keller started crowing today! So now he is Herman. I think.
But with these there are some all black & some with the white wing tips. I'm excited about my other turkey eggs due to go in the hatcher next week from that guy we got eggs from.

Hawkeye, how are your little Silkies doing that you have hatched? Do you have any new pics of them? If you decide you want to get a rabbit or two I'm sure I will have some. I have 4 baby chinchilla rabbits right now. They think they're big rabbits now because they can hop in & out of the next box. They're so darned cute, just little miniatures of their momma. I need to get new pics of them. I have a mini rex doe due to have her babies on Monday. I put her nest box in her cage today with straw in it & she immediately started re-arranging it, so I let her do her thing. They make like a tunnel in the hay or straw & then line it with their hair from their belly that they pull out. By the time they get done there is this soft cloud for the babies to snuggle into.
I must admit, I've lost my enthusiasm for my turkeys

Totally understandable. Sigh. I hope what you do have does hatch. Good luck!!

Happy Mother's Day all you mothers out there!

Prairie, welcome to the board. It's been a tremendous help to me, and not just with chickens. We welcome lots of pictures.

I have nothing much planned today except some sorting of stuff inside the house. I'll probably also cut some arugula and basil. This morning I heard voices calling "Here chick chick chick" and when I looked outside, I saw a neighbor with her two little grandchildren crouched down in the alley along the back fence. They were feeding grass to the chickens and having a great time watching them. So sweet!

Karen are you sure you want to have a bunch of people show up. I mean that is asking a lot of you... just sayin'. I would love to come to your place. Not sure I am up to the drive though. If several of these other people were coming though I think it would be nice to meet everyone.
I just sold 25 chicks. The midsized ones. The guy counted what I had left in that bin and there were still 17. I didn't even put a dent in the numbers I have. These people bought a bunch from me before and were super pleased with them. So when they saw my add they showed back up. I gave them a discount for buying that many.
I am sure I have at least 100 little chicks plus tons of older ones.

Danz - What breeds of chicks do you still have? I have a family up here in the city that is interested in a little flock. PM me.

Welcome aboard Prairie!

Also, Happy Mothers day to all the moms. I just got done making breakfast in bed for my beloved and telling the monkeys to leave her alone this am. She is enjoying her quiet time.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL THE MOTHERS!

OK, there is a debate on another site about what these chicks are, I say they're Speckled Sussex, what do you all think?

They were sold to her as something else & she's trying to figure out what she got.

Well not much going on here today, I plan to work on my rabbit hutches & clean cages, but other than that, no real plans. My DH has a ham in the smoker today so I won't have to cook, yay for that! Have a great day everyone!

Trish from my experience of the kinds I have raised those look like duck winged pheonix, Americanas, or possibly wellsummers. If their faces look like they have eye makeup on they are probably wellsummers. Also sometimes a gold laced Wyandotte could have similar markings. What were they sold as?

Danz, they were sold to her as Ameraucanas, but they aren't that, they don't have puffy cheeks. My Welsummer chick isn't that dark, they seem kind of dark for that. Yeah, there are quite a few that could look similar. My brown leghorns also looked very similar at first, but now they're starting to look different than the speckled sussex since the sussex are now getting feathers & spots. I really don't think they're phoenix either. I'm going to go out in a few minutes & take some pics of my chicks & post them for her & see if she thinks hers look anything like mine. I have speckled sussex chicks right now & brown leghorn chicks. I also have one Welsummer chick also we could compare to. Anyway, she'll know for sure when they feather out I guess.
