Hawkeye-most of the liquid you put on your dogs neck will kill the fleas and ticks when they bite. That's why it's effective at keeping them out of the yard. They get on the dogs and they die.

Danz-Thank you so much for the offer of a ride. I'm just not up to it. I'm still wiped out from the weekend. I wish I didn't get that way. I love to travel and go places. You guys will just have to go and take pictures of everyone and everything, and I will just enjoy the get together vicariously through your photos!

Avery-Nice pics whether they snubbed you or not. How old are your ameraucanas?

Fall hatches on the AMs. Really torn, would like them to get to doing their business, but DS should separate at least a couple for Summer fairs. :/ Then again, he wants to go to Sedalia this fall, so...........

I don't know whether the Silkie is an official project color or not. I know he's not the only one of his coloring that I've seen. There's a pair of shall we say "seasoned" breeders who like to mess around with/create new Silkie colors for their own pleasure. We're lucky enough to live close to one. He's for my mismatched lot of "pretties". He's not done maturing, so don't know completely how he'll end up. Tomorrow's our last day of school, then we're having a mini boot-camp/house cleaning/project doing marathon. I'll see about getting some new pics.

Haven't decided on which direction to go and probably should talk to some in club on how to advise DD in her pairings. Like the look of the "henny" boys better, but it makes sexing more of a pita than it already is, plus I think they have less testosterone. Less aggressive in all things, which sucks when you're stuck with AI or nothing.

So I've been doing laundry and sweeping and stuff that I've put off forever. I worked hard all day but it's not readily apparent.
Ivy driving kills me and road trips do me in. I can't seem to stand up straight when I get out of the car. It's plain crazy to drive down there but no one ever said I was sane.
I want a chance to meet some of these other people. I have met Karen and can't wait to see her again. I just decided it was time to have a day for myself. I'll just have to get up extra early and get the birds taken care of.
I just got a buyer for my Seramas. I am so thrilled. I won't make much money per say but I'm not doing any thing with them right now other than trying to produce a few white chicks. I will just pick out a few I want to keep and the rest will go. It'll be a couple weeks but he said he would take them and will send $$ to hold them. I plan to attempt some of my own color breeding with what I keep. It will be much easier to manage with just a few birds.
I was just sitting outside watching the peacocks. They really are amazing birds. We made the pen 8 foot wide and 6 foot tall. When Pete fans his tale he still has about 6 inches extra on each side and the top hits the top netting. I wouldn't have begun to imagine he would spread it that wide. All of the references say to allow 6 feet. He would be super over crowded at that.

Ok Hawkeye, here goes. Any red is being caused by dirt or the camera or
hu.gif
. At present anyways, he has no reds/browns and no leakage.

For comparison. Baby blue. Spot on. No leakage.

Henny white from both these pics is same bird.

I don't know why every things coming out with red/yellow casts.

I'm so jealous of all the guineas, peafowl and ducks.

I need to move!

rvroman, your garden coop is gorgeous - I am so envious! I'm sorry I don't remember if the BR is Susan B. Anthony or Chiclet, but, and I hate to have to say this, that is a very rooish looking tail. Her coloration is that of a hen so hopefully it is just the way she is holding the tail in those pics.

Chicklet is my BR and I am hoping she is a she, I had some doubts with the tail, but her coloring is more black with white than white with black, and all the pictures I have seen of the two genders, she does have the pullet coloration.

All my chickens go nuts over broken eggs. But no one eats the eggs that are ok. I often throw out a cracked one or whatever and they think it's a treat. I also feed all their old shells back to them.
I tried to get on here for awhile and it was back up and said the website was too busy for it's capacity. I guess everyone is in chicken mode today.

How do you feed the shell back to them? I would like to do this for calcium I think, I just don't know how. Do I grind it and put it in food or just break it up and set it out?

So here are the pics:
This is Pete the peacock.

Here are the Mandarin babies and mama

And here is the whole family
I really love your menagerie of beautiful birds!!! I want some other types besides chickens so bad, yours are SOOOOOO pretty!
love.gif

LOL! I got the boys home yesterday, and while I was finishing their "apartments", Leroy started crowing. Soon my roos in the back yard were crowing, then...Helen/Herman crowed

OMgoodness it was the most hilarious thing I think hubby and I have ever heard! He sounds like his batteries are dying!

The ones with the muffs are blue and black Ameraucanas. That center boy was the one I was talking about. Some breeders are calling them frosted Silkies and the others something else, but can't remember at the moment. Have a friend with a pullet, and he sure is "purty", so thought what the heck and bought him.

Can try for better pics another time. Not brown or reddish, must be the camera. It's gray, silver and black tips.

Some of the little ones who apparently don't know they're supposed to snub me & give me only butt pics.

More cold shoulder. And to think I trimmed up their tree today and let them keep the trimmings to rifle through along with a whole bag of grass clippings.

I love your birds, they are beautiful. I am having a hard time deciding on whether I want silkies or not. I find them interesting, but DH would kill me right now so I am not pushing it yet. How do they do with big birds? Would I have to give them their own pen and coop?

Sorry I didn't get a chance to hit everyone, I just got home from an all day retreat which was a blast, but I just didn't have the energy to read everything, I skimmed and looked at pretty pictures

I'm really excited you're coming!! :) I would just be in heaven to have peafowl! I bet it is so amazing to have them out there. There is no way I'm talking my DH into those right now! LOL But I can wish.. His tail span is incredible!! I can hardly imagine he would spread so wide! WOW.

Well good to know!! I'll definitely keep up on the drops then. Says to do it every so many weeks. Yeah... wonder why they don't have frontline for us? hehehe!! WHO was it that mentioned that? I'm still giggling over that one.

WHOA, Avery-- those are some nice birds!! Your boy looks more like a reverse Silver Partridge! You know? You should post those pictures of him on the silkie thread and ask for Silver Silkie to critique his color! He can probably even give you the genetic coding behind it! That guy is insanely smart with color genetics. Anyway, no split wing-- great feathering, super nice crest on him-- wow! He even looks pretty typey just standing there. I would hate to not use him for something! Maybe with partridges-- silver? He looks like a silver base, not gold, right?? That seems like a pretty uncommon trait with a white base. Who did you get him from?? Are they using silver based whites?? ANd how old is he?? He has a very girly crest on him.
droolin.gif
Also-- nice blue and great whites! Looks like you are having a lot of fun down there!
big_smile.png
Oh and yeah, Sonoran told me that the smaller the combt, the less fertile they are-- and I think it is about the same for crests-- smaller combs go hand in hand with the more girly crests. But I sure do like that look. But take it from me, that whole AI thing is kind of the pits. I'm glad I'm done for this season! I think I have enough birds to pick from and hopefully when my shipped eggs hatch, I'll be able to pair up non related birds and get something even nicer next year. We shall see!! I'm really excited about the whole thing!

Danz & Avery, LOVED your pics!!!!!!

I just snapped these this evening of my Alohas outside. (Cross posted on Aloha Project forum) Some of them look like they got caught in a snowstorm. There is just a really good variety of color for me to work with. They are healthy, active and also surprisingly friendly.

I nearly lost my little Bourbon Red turkey yesterday. I'm not really sure what happened since he was doing just fine (other than the unabsorbed yolk issue). All of a sudden, he was just standing, not eating or drinking and by evening he was gasping for air and just a pitiful specimen. I gave him antibiotics in his water by dropper and warmed him in my hands. He didn't feel warm at all like he normally does. I spoon fed him some feed mixed in water, put some antibiotic on the opening in his abdomen and then put him to bed inside the incubator set at 95 degrees. This morning he was perking along just fine! He ate and drank on his own and seems normal. I wondered if the ducklings he's been rooming with got him damp and cold or something. So when I went to Atwoods today for supplies, I bought a little turkey buddy to keep him company and set them up in their own rubbermaid tub. They seem to be doing very well together but I'm keeping the antibiotics in his water for 7 days. I've nursed this little one so intensively I just couldn't bear not to give him the antibiotics. If this one makes it, he'll have a retirement home here for sure. The unabsorbed yolk issue is resolving itself. The excess that hung outside his body for so long fell off and the opening continues to shrink closed. I alternate keeping antibiotic ointment and Vit E on the opening and it sure seems to be working. I can't believe how attached to this little turkey I've become. I'll have to take a pic for you tomorrow of he and his turkey buddy.

Hawkeye, I hope it turns out to be a fluke and you don't have an egg eater. I found a broken egg in a nesting box, alongside an unbroken one, and it didn't look like anyone had messed with it at all. I guess mine don't have a taste for egg?!

Danz, it's great that Patty came back. The peafowl and pretty, but I think those Mandarins are just as gorgeous. I'd love to have some of those.

Karen, I've never seen anything like the Alohas; they're really pretty. I can't wait for turkey pictures.

I don't think I'm going to be able to come Wednesday.

I'd told my niece I would help her with some decorated cupcakes for a school project. At the time, she needed them for Friday. Now she needs them for Thursday, so we'll probably need to be making them on Wednesday. I still hope to get to meet everyone sometime soon.

Karen-Hmmm, what is this Aloha project? Some neat looking patterns going there. Mottling? I got to see mottled AMs last week, OMG!!!
bow.gif
Gorgeous birds. All I could think was Spanish ladies with lacy mantillas. Glad your turkey is feeling better. I've got a broody BSL that thinks she's a turkey atm if you need a companion.

rvroman-We have some Silkies that live with standards and even some free ranging ones that live with standards. Not the ones with the big ol' crests tho. They vary in size overall too. We have some petite Silkies and some that rival hatchery standards. DD has a blue Silkie cock w/silver leakage that I keep hemming and hawing about getting rid of because he's huge. She's got plenty of nice blues to chose from for regular breeding, but every so often I think about making standard size Silkies. He'd have no problem taking care of a standard flock.

Lol Hawkeye- Sonoran has some that would be my fav Silkie color if I could only pick one. I've only seen the one IRL, but her khaki....
droolin.gif
The breeder is on the ASBC and BYC and had I not been so busy loving on him, I'd probably remember what she said. Don't think it was silver partridge though. IDK Betsy. Just to our south. We're losing one great breeder to our NE, but at least we've still got our great Okies. Her birds are fabulous and when you count who she trades stock with, all kinds of stuff can be going on. Not a bit of gold in him, but can't tell you what all she's cooking up. Think up whatever amazing, hard to find, whatever and she's got some there somewhere I swear and probably making showgirls with them all too. Lol

A friend of mine bought the pullet with him and has another, so I'm sure we'll try to get at least a hatch or two, but unless it's a color she wants to work on, I just got him for my personal enjoyment. I'd say he's still a cockerel or a very young cock. Currently no crowing or any interest in the ladies, but as I said, really not unusual IME. Sonoran's right. That's the rub with those gorgeous fellas.

Avery- Those are nice silkies!!! I love the girly boys too. I have two cockerels right now and need to decide which one to keep. Maybe I can post pics on here and you guys can tell me what you think.

Karen- Those Alohas are beautiful!!! I have mille fleur and calico cochins so that color is right up my alley! I can't wait to see them in person on Wednesday. I bet your little turkey got a chill. I put my bronze turkey poults outside several weeks ago and it was really chilly one day and you would have thought they were dying. I had to bring them in and warm them with a hair dryer and put them back in the brooder. They were positively wilting.

Well, I overdid it today. Mowed and chainsawed and string trimmed the yard. Mowed the area in the upper pasture for my homemade horse riding ring. I am sick of not having a place to ride so I decided to make a riding ring out of t posts and white electric fence tape. I don't care what it looks like and neither do the horses! I am pretty excited to have a fenced area to work them before we go for a ride in the open. Boy, I wish they made frontline for humans, I have picked more ticks off. Yuck!!!
