Consolidated Kansas

OK, I'm going to bore you all with a bunch of pics, but I just promised HeChicken I would post some.

The sexlink chicks: Hen?

Roo?

My two remaining turkey poults, they're starting to feather out now & are getting more feisty.
Thanks for posting all those pics Teresa.

those turkey poults! I can't believe how much Lily and Jasmine have grown up since the last pics you posted. I don't know if its the black and white but Jasmine just doesn't look as much like a GP as Lily - it seems like its also something about the shape of her face. But you sure can see that mischievous glint in her eye! It will be interesting to see how those BSL's grow up and if their color as chicks is an indicator of gender after all.

Ok, here are some pictures of the garden/coop/big girls. We got A LOT accomplished this weekend! I got all my baskets up around the fence, 8 of them have strawberrys and I am going to put various herbs in the other 8

Here is Susan B Anthony and Chicklet all grown up. Well not really, they are still just youngins, but they have gotten so big. They love the freedom of the garden!

DH got 3 out of 4 sides finished and the 2 side windows and doors are done.

rvroman, your garden coop is gorgeous - I am so envious! I'm sorry I don't remember if the BR is Susan B. Anthony or Chiclet, but, and I hate to have to say this, that is a very rooish looking tail. Her coloration is that of a hen so hopefully it is just the way she is holding the tail in those pics.

All is well here, so far. I need to mow again today and work around the house. Going to call the Dr about my middle and see what he says. (tick) OH!! in latest news, I think I might have an egg eater.... I can't be sure though. I was getting about 9 eggs a day, and now I'm lucky if I get 4 eggs in a day!!! Not to mention, I found what I think might have been egg-goo yesterday in the nest box! It was just clear, and i didn't see any yellow and no shells... so I don't know for sure. Maybe I'm just paranoid. But if I have an egg eater, I'll be getting rid of her.
Oh no! I hope you don't have an egg-eater. I've had that happen sometimes where there is a bunch of goo and a flattened shell in the nest box, but so far all it seems to be is that an egg cracked or broke upon landing from being laid, and they took advantage of the situation and ate the rest. I haven't seen any evidence that they are deliberately breaking them open and eating them though, so I hope it is the same for you.

I am going to try to come! I can't wait to put faces with names! I will have to leave by 2:30 though so I can get my son from school.
Went for a little ride on my horse today and upon returning to the barn, our resident peacock, Percival, was displaying for us. I managed to get some photos of him from quite close up:
He is beautiful!!

Here are my Blue Wheaten Ameraucana chicks. I have two each colored like this, what do you think IVY, do I have two pair? One of each is lighter than the other & there are two bigger & darker in coloring.

Then finally just because I haven't put any new pics on lately, here are the latest pics of my GP pups:
This is Lily

And this is Jasmine
Those sexlink crosses do look different don't they? Have you marked them so you know which is which when they are older? OMGosh! Your pups are huge! Lol For some reason I always picture them as the little pups that were in your avatar for so long!

Sharol- I am praying for your BIL. I hope he pulls through.

I took in an orphaned baby robin on Friday. Mamma died and it had been in the nest chirping and not being fed for at least two days (we found the mama Wed night right under the nest). I tried, but lost it Sat night. I think it was too far gone, but it still made me sad that I couldn't do anything to save it.

I hope everyone had a great mother's day! I got to spend time with my daughter and granddaughter. :) (I get to babysit Kaylea tonight - oh darn! LOL)
Next weekend my DS graduates from high school! I can't believe that both the kids will be out of school after next week. Craziness! My father and brother are coming into town for that - they haven't been to Kansas since last summer, so it will be nice showing them the new house and seeing them!
A friend of mine was successful with 3 little birds that the mother was killed in a tractor and they got the babies out. She fed the babies cat food or tuna out of a can. She used a little spoon, but she started out with a large syringe feeding them. They got BIG. I don't remember what they were, but she worked at our CoOp and they were in there in a cage for a little while. Sounds like you had a fun mother's Day. :)

I just don't know what I have!! I left an egg out last night in the coop with them. One of them laid on the floor and instead of getting it, I left it there to see what would happen. I'm sure they all saw it, because it was laid right next to the pop door. This morning I went out and it was still there. Hmmmm.... So no one ate it.

I hope that egg-goo I *think* I saw was just a fluke. I don't know. Anyway, the test egg I left out there is now safely in my fridge.

Ok so my luck is going as usual. Last evening I finally got my new building peafowl pen ready enough to move in the birds. After being stuck in a horse trailer for a couple of months I am sure the peafowl would be happy. So then the process of moving them from the horse trailer to the pen began. We parked the trailer near the pen and opened both doors. I draped netting over the top of the doors and went into the trailer to herd the peafowl out. Daddy peacock went without a hitch. Then it was a roundup to get the other three moved. I was trying to herd them and forgot about the roost and all but knocked myself out hitting my forehead on it. Scrape and big knot! Finally got the two young ones out but the mother peafowl was fighting it. Finally out she went and flew right out the top. DH had failed to keep the netting up close to the horse trailer. So now I've got all this time and money invested and once again my female peafowl is MIA.
I set up a dog kennel with netting on top just outside the gate to the new pen. I put in food and water and was so hoping she would be in there this morning eating. No luck. I guess I will be waiting another few days and hope she misses her mate, gets hungry and find the open gate. I wish I had the other pens finished next to this one because it would increase my chances of capturing her. But I am a bit afraid to disturb them much at this point if I want to catch her. I don't think I am going to have babies this year at this rate. Here it is May and there is no eggs yet and once again I have no female to lay them.
Chickies, duckies, etc was here yesterday to get ducks and I realized after she left that I sold her chicks last year. DH had delivered them to her up by Admire but I hadn't personally met her yet. Medawinks came and brought me a little Salmon Favorelle cockerel she couldn't keep and she also got some young pullets for a friend of hers who lost her chickens to a fox. So glad to meet you both. Medawink's children are awesome. I had fun showing them around. She also gave me a lavender d"uccle cockerel. I have porcelains and mille fleur in the incubator right now. I probably should have declined but he is just adorable. I knew DH would love him. I think he is going to be his new pet chicken. She said this chick came from Chooks and was supposed to be female. He's definitely all boy and crows like crazy already even at just 4 weeks old or so. He is so stinking cute. No wonder I can't seem to downsize. I want it all.
I think I forgot to mention that day before yesterday I was cleaning out my dove pen and trying to spray the bottom of it with the door open. The guineas freaked out and most of the doves flew out. I just left the door open. Now I have doves hanging around the yard. I have one young one and a female on eggs that stayed in there but the rest are flying free. I was hoping they would all come back to roost at night but that isn't happening. I was tired of caring for them and only wanted to keep the ivories. But I was hoping to sell them, not let them go free. There are too many predatory birds around her that will get them. These birds are so tame that they don't have the sense to fly away in danger. My youngest cat would have eaten one the other day because it wasn't afraid of her had I not purposely spooked it to get her away from it.

I have a hen that lays the occasional soft shelled egg. Yesterday, she laid it on the patio and the girls (and the roo) all dived in to eat it. I got the shell away from them, so I don't really think that they know it is an "egg" but that happens fairly often. I'll find the soft shell on the floor of the coop in the morning when I go out to clean, and there won't be any sign of the innards of the egg. They don't try to eat the hard eggs, though.

Maybe you have a soft egg laid somewhere.

All my chickens go nuts over broken eggs. But no one eats the eggs that are ok. I often throw out a cracked one or whatever and they think it's a treat. I also feed all their old shells back to them.
I tried to get on here for awhile and it was back up and said the website was too busy for it's capacity. I guess everyone is in chicken mode today.

WHOA! Gone for a weekend and 70+posts to catch up on. Forgive me if I miss anyone!

Josie- that is a birch in the picture with the planter. It likes water, so we planted it near the hydrant and it has grown like crazy.

Pike-The coop plan looks nice and well thought out. I agree with Hawkeye and I think I would go a little bigger.

Danz-Hurray on the peacock pen, and gggggrrrrrr that the hen escaped. She is used to staying in the horse trailer. You might try leaving that open near the other peacocks to see if she comes back to it. I think the tomato plant for your dad is a good idea. My dad is in assisted living and that is what he does. Just that little thing is a big thing to him.

Prairie-

Sounds like you are not too far from Danz.

HEChicken-Frontline for people?

hhhmmmm.... actually, that might not be a bad idea! I hate those darn things! The peacock is BEAUTIFUL!

RVRoman-Congrats on making it through a tough semester. The garden coop looks great!

Sharol-Keep up posted about your BIL. My word! That is awful!

Trish-on the wheatens, the roosters will definitly darken up more and quicker than the hens. You will know for sure which is which fairly early as they feather out.

I had a busy weekend. We were on the road all weekend it seems. Oldest son graduated from KSU Saturday, then DH picked up a new buck at Chanute and we went on to Columbus to spend Mother's Day with my sis, Checoukan. Got home late. I'm beat. I just called to cancel my PT until tomorrow.

This tick thing is interesting. I've been outdoors all my life. Grew up on a farm, have hunted all my life and I've lost track of the number of times I've pulled a tick off myself, and several times they have been there for at least a day before I find them. I've never had any problems after being bit. I still despise the little boogers. Why is it some folks get so sick and some don't? Is it just luck or lack thereof? The tick lottery that you DON'T want to win? I wonder if they are worse this year due to the mild winter we had. I do think using some kind of repellent does help, and different ticks access you in different ways. I know when I am out in the woods often time they way they get on me is they drop or blow down off the trees. Others , like some of the teeny tiny ones crawl up onto your shoes and socks from the ground.

I we do treat our dogs and other animals for fleas and ticks. I think that helps as much as anything for keeping them controlled in the yard.

KAREN-OH! I want to come to your place on Wednesday, but I just don't think I could swing it. I'm clear up in the NE corner of Kansas, If I don't figure out a way to get there I'm going to be feeling sorry for myself and feeling very left out.

I hope everyone has a great time, though. There is such an active group down that direction I would love to meet everyone and put faces behind the names. I just don't think I can make it.

I, too, was gone this weekend and have had lots of catch-up reading to do.

I find the tick thing interesting as well. I, too, grew up on a farm and have never had any problems with being bit by a tick.

I am in the Northwest corner of KS and am also too far to go on Wednesday. :( Ivy - don't feel too left out. You won't be the only one who isn't able to go.

Well it's the little seed ticks that tend to be the carriers of disease. These things are tiny. I once lost a cocker spaniel to them. They had embedded in the webs between her toes. She had so many she lost too much blood and died. I swear there was a bout 30 of those tiny things between each toe. The vet had to search for them because none of us could figure out what was wrong with her. She had them no where else. She had a flea/tick collar on but apparently it didn't help her feet.
There is actually some kind of vaccine you can take for ticks. I had an acquaintance in North Caroline who hunted all the time. Those woods are full of ticks. Anyway he got this shot once a year for ticks. It was my understanding it kept the ticks off of him but maybe it was to fight the diseases they carry. I am sure an internet search could yield more info on that.
It's been an exciting morning so far. Praise the Lord! I went out to feed and water and Patty, the peahen was sitting near the pen where the others were. I just slowly walked toward her then circled around and she walked right into my set up pen. I opened the door and she went in with the others. Success! It was effortless. Well Pete, the peacock got really excited and immediately started courting her. So I snapped a couple pictures. They lighting isn't right but he is so pretty.
Then I snapped a couple pic of the baby Mandarin ducks.
Ivy if you want to go to Karens, you can meet me and I'll drive the rest of the way. It would be fun even though it would be a good solid 5 hours on the road for you each way. Isn't it amazing how large Kansas is when you get down to it???
So here are the pics:
This is Pete the peacock.

Here are the Mandarin babies and mama

And here is the whole family

Ivy and lizzyGSR, I'm so sorry you won't be able to be here. Some here expressed interest in coming to see my set up and so I just threw this together. It wasn't initially a planned statewide event, but some are traveling to be here. I will be happy to put together something at a later time for everyone to meet as centrally as possible so that the group will have the opportunity on a weekend to participate and meet. I'm thinking something early fall and we can decide in the meantime where to meet, so I'm open to ideas. I'm really sorry guys. I sure didn't intend to leave anyone out. Right now I just can't do a weekend with all the projects I'm trying to get accomplished before the heat arrives, since so many of the projects require DH's help. For those of you who cannot be here, forgive me, please?

Danz, I can't see your pics but can tell they are supposed to be there. I'm working on figuring out what to do about that.
