Consolidated Kansas

UGH! It is hot out!! I am not getting anything done. I am thinking Molly has the right idea about being practically nocturnal. I want to go dig a hole in the dirt and sleep the afternoon away with her!

Danz- Here is a good story for you! When the adult geese "adopted" or stole the goslings from me the white gosling had only been separated from his two cayuga buddies for a few days. Well now that they are all free ranging the ducks are trying desperately to get back to their long lost goose buddy but the adults chase them away. The grey goslings are terrified of the ducks because they were never with them so they run screeching like the ducks are going to kill them making the "parents" even more irate at the bothersome ducks! The poor older white gosling goes back and forth between his duck friends and his goose family and is constantly trying to smooth things over between everyone! I must get some pictures. It is like a waterfowl soap opera out there!

I'm about to head out and check birds and possibly water the garden, but if it's too hot, I'm waiting till it gets dark! I pretty much AM nocturnal (for the past 11 years)

Kansaseq,
I have one hen chicken that is out standing in the duck's swimming pool!!!! (kids wading pool) Now I know it must be hot!!

I set pans of water out all over the place in the summer for the chickens to stand in, Prairie. They cool themselves by wetting their feet. In fact in the breeds more adapted to cold weather they recommend you provide water to stand in.
Josie those poor ducks are bonded to that gosling. It's going to take them a while to figure out they don't have to be with it. Maybe when your baby ducks get older they will be able to join up wit them and be one happy duck family.
My one goose is still lame. I really don't know what to do for her. I set them up a double kennel over by the barn and then strung out 100 feet of that safety fence you recommended so they could get out and eat the grass. But she never leaves the pen. I think she is too afraid she can't get away fast enough if she gets scared. Poor thing! I am trying to get her a better diet but she isn't improving much.
When I moved the ducks I think I figured out by voice I have at least two males. I think that would be just fine. I'm not sure how many males to females you should have with these.
The day went so fast. I spent all morning until about 1:00 PM doing paperwork. Then I fed and watered the birds. Then I went to work on my quail pen and took it apart and tried to rebuild it. I think I am done except for cutting some grooves for the trays to slide out, and bracing the bottom so the wind won't blow it over. I tried to make it as light weight as possible but in doing so it isn't real steady in a gust of wind. I was really wanting to get it done and move those birds out today but I just ran out of energy.
I need to go back out and water everyone again and tuck them into bed later.

Prairie, It must have been a bit cooler over here. I got my watering and transplanting done (thinning my tomatoes to give some to a neighbor/friend). It was warm, but with a light breeze and I was in the shade, anyway. Your poor hen had the right idea, though.Wish mine would do that when it gets too hot.

Here's a mini-drama that happened in my bedroom last night as I was online.

The Bone Jacking

by Kansaseq

Mom (aka ME) is on the computer, so the dogs know to settle in for a while.
Mica (AmStaff rescue) and Ursa (All American Brown Dog foster) were laying on the huge dog bed, side by side, quietly gnawing on their Nylabones. Ursa looked away for a moment, and neat as can be, Mica snatched up Ursa's bone and stashed it under her foot.

Ursa looks back and has a "Whaaaaaa?" look on her face. What happened to my bone!? It was right here!

Being young and new to the household (someone dumped her here last month), Ursa plays the pacifist and leaves, while Mica looks quite pleased with herself.

The rest happened before I could get it on camera, but Vega, my rescue Aussie/Acd from a few years ago, snatched up one of Mica's bones when she felt the need to lick her**ahem** rear end. He carried the bone into the other room, quickly grew bored with it, where Ursa once again picked it up and brought it back to the dog bed.

In the mean time, my old man Terv, Beowulf, kept staring at me so I'd give him his lunch. "Mom? I'm starving here!!"

Great stories!

Yeah, I'd love to have another get together!

TNT, what chicken coop are you selling? Did you post a picture of it? I must have missed that. Okay, I seriously need to get something done around here. UGH.
I want another meet up too! I want to come this time! I am selling my coop because I bought the new shed (because it is bigger and I can walk into it) to use as my coop when we move. I didn't post it here but I did on the swap page and on craigslist.

Your dogs are beautiful!

tnt, yay on the coop! You will like having more room to actually go into your coop. I could have built nest boxes on the outside of my shed, but I chose to have them inside so I have to go in there to get the eggs. I actually don't mind, that way I can check out the hens that are in there at the time & in the evening see the ones that are already on the roost.

Gosh it was so hot here today, I about died! I just don't take the heat well at all any more. My granddaughter left when my DH went to work, he took her home on his way, so I took the opportunity to lay down for a nap while it was super hot, I was exhausted. We had trouble getting her to bed last night, she wanted to call her mom at 1:00 in the morning, which we promptly told her we were not going to do. Then she got my DH up at 7:30 & he was not too pleased about being woke up at that hour since we don't ever get to bed until about 1:30. So he's going to be a tired guy tonight too. Anyway, after I got up from my nap I went out & did all my chores & it was still hot as can be. I decided I just had to work on that turkey pen, so I sat out in the driveway in the shade & put the hardware cloth on the two sides & the gate tonight. I was soaking wet when I came in, I'm heading for the shower soon. At least I got that much done & tomorrow I need to build the box part for the shelter for them & hook everything together. I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants on this one. It's kind of like the chick pen, but only with an attached shelter for them to get in since it's outside. I probably will end up putting a tarp over part of it too for some shade, we'll see about that part after I get it put together. I'm still using the wood & pallets I got from the air conditioner place, so it's being put to good use. I think I have about two more small pallets left of all the ones I got. I have torn them apart & used them for the pens I've been building. I hope they get some more pallets there & I can go back & get some more, they sure seem to be handy to have around. I didn't think I would like tearing them apart & it is kind of a pain, but the free wood is worth it.

I put my lavender Orpington eggs & the Welsummer eggs my friend sent me in the hatcher today, so we'll see what happens in a few days. I hope I get a few of the Orpingtons at least, but you just never know with shipped eggs what will happen. Sometimes they develop for awhile & then quit & sometimes they get all the way to the hatch date & then die in the shell. If these don't make it maybe I can get a few from Chooks when she comes back this way & try those. At least they wouldn't be shipped & would have a better chance.

Kansas, I loved your dog story by the way, so cute! That sounds like my little Yorkie, she is always causing a distraction to get Bella away from her chew bone & then stealing it. Bella will come back & look like now I know I had that bone a minute ago, just like your dog, it's so funny.
