I have friends that do that too and fortunately they always invite us. Actually, they put on an amazing show that lasts for about 20 minutes and includes a wonderful finale. We meet at 6:30 and they have a "cocktail hour" with wine and beer for the adults and soda for the kids. That is followed by a BBQ dinner brought in by one of the BBQ places, and after eating and before dark we continue to socialize with the 200 or so other guests. The kids play volleyball - and sometimes the adults join in too. It is a wonderful tradition and I look forward to it every year.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes with the peachick. It's still alive, but just not doing that well. It's either sink or swim at this point, kind of the strongest survive type of thing, it either eats or it dies. I tried my best with it trying to teach it & that's all I can do. I'm trying to arrange to get the other two older chicks, but they're aways away from me & need to figure out how to get them here.
Hawkeye, good luck with your 4H stuff this week & your 4th of July thing. I agree, I don't know how you do something like that, I couldn't pull it off, that's a lot.
Danz, well even the experts on the peafowl site weren't that much help, they kind of say if they make it they do & half of the battle is getting them hatched & the other is keeping them alive for 6 months. I guess if they make it that long they'll be OK. Geez, I didn't know they were so darned hard to raise, I guess that's why they're so expensive. I'm hoping that these two month old ones I'm getting are started well enough that I won't have to worry so much about them. Surely the guy has them eating well at this point. I don't think I want to try to hatch any more, they're just too fragile, they're even worse than the turkeys I hatched & those were bad enough. My turkeys are doing great outside & are growing by leaps & bounds, I'm going to have to figure out a bigger pen for them soon. I just hate having to worry about birds in this heat & the rabbits too, it's such a pain. The chickens that are free-ranging can go under low hanging bushes & at least get in the shade, but I have young chicks still in the grow-out pen that have some shade, but it still gets hot there, especially those days over 100. I haven't used the mister for a couple of days, they seem to have done OK without it, but if it gets super hot again I will. Thank goodness my rabbits are all in a very shady spot under the trees outside, I feel fortunate to have a place like that for them, otherwise they all would have probably already died.
We're not doing that much for the 4th, it's just too hot for me. My DH is off that day, but if anything we'll go over to the fairgrounds here at dark & watch the fireworks for the town, that's about it. He's smoking ribs that day, yum. We love it! We do spend a few hundered dollars on fireworks--big ones! (and other people contribute too), but this is our favorite holiday-- love it more than xmas! ha! We rent a bounce house every year so the kids are entertained and then the rest of us can chat. Everyone is outside. It's not an indoor event. I do clean my house like crazy (taking a mini break) but everyone brings lawn chairs and we grill everything out on the back pergola. We bought this really cool mister system that is under our pergola now-- it has a booster pump and timer on it, and it keeps us all cool under it. Right now, I'm watering the back yard and the back area where we're shooting off. We have several of those really tall water sprinklers that are like 4 feet tall. I'm going to soak the yard all day long and into the night just to be sure nothing catches on fire! Make it nicer to walk on damp grass tomorrow than crunchy dried out lawn. We have a DJ set up his equipment out back and people usually kick off their shoes to dance out there-- last year was hilarious seeing everyone line dance out in the grass bare foot. I got the lawn mowed, and now I'm starting in on the house. But I'm taking a mini break. I need to catch a second wind!
Whoa... that is a BIG shindig! We don't spend that kind of money on food-- just hamburgers and hotdogs and then everyone who is invited is asked to bring a sidedish and their own "beverage". People show up with coolers of beer usually. We try to make it as cost effective on us as possible. I would love to set up a tether ball out here next year and horse shoes. We get a great deal with our bounce house because we've been with the same company for the last 5 or 6 years! We only pay for the smallest and they upgrade us to a nice big bounce. It's awesome. Your friends must have a pretty sweet set up to do all of that, too! I put all of my horses in their stalls before we start firing stuff off... even though it doesn't bother them in the least, they are bomb proof. But I don't want them getting hit with anything! Okay-- back to cleaning!!

So I lost TWO more brahma chicks last night.
One was kinda withered yesterday and I took it out and gave it vitamins and electrolytes and fed it a bit. But the other one looked fine and I went out this morning and they were both gone! I was shocked. I ordered these chicks just to get gold laced/buff laced brahmas and now I only have two left. The rest of the chicks from the same breeder are fine! I don't know if I should contact her? I don't understand why everyone else is great except these chicks and I paid a fortune for them.
On a brighter note my 3 call duck babies are doing very well, bustling all over the place on their over sized feet! And I think they think I am their mommy....

Josie, those are adorable pics of your Call Ducks but I'm sorry about the Brahmas. It makes you wonder doesn't it? If they are from the same breeder you would think the maternal nutrition would have been the same for all of them so that's probably not it. So perhaps Brahmas just aren't as hardy as the other breeds? I know a lot of people have found that Speckled Sussex are less hardy than other breeds but I know nothing about Brahmas.

Hawkeye - wow, it sounds like you are putting a ton of thought into making a great party. I think it is the same for these friends of ours, that the 4th is their big bash for the year. They are older people who have been quite successful in business over the years and I think they do this as a sort of thank you for all those who supported them over the years. They have a ranch outside of town and that is where it is held each year.
I must admit for me it doesn't feel like the 4th of July yet. Kind of like Christmas coming a month early or something. Its certainly not due to lack of heat so I don't know why it doesn't feel like it yet this year.
Trish, I haven't used my misters the last few days either. Usually 102 would feel pretty darn warm but I think after baking at 110-112 several days last week, now it feels like a cool change when it is "only" 102 for both me and the birds alike. They haven't been showing any signs of needing the extra cooling so I decided I may as well not add the wear and tear on the Cobra and save it for when we really need it.
I had a call from a friend in town this morning who accidentally got a Polish roo with her chicks this Spring and now that he is crowing, she needs to rehome him. She was hoping I would take him since I can now have roos but I had to tell her I couldn't. I have plenty of roos - too many DH says - for the number of hens I have already, and I know Polish can be picked on by the rest of the flock due to being more docile. My Silkies are holding their own since they are the "head roos" but adding a new bird - and a solo at that - I just couldn't see it working out. Poor guy - I hope she finds him a good home. She said she does have someone else who will take him so hopefully that situation will work out for him okay.

I spent more time telling my kids what not to do than letting them enjoy them. I just hate the booms and the bangs. My kids as adults love fire crackers and such cause they don't have an over protective mother looming over them!
I, too, enjoy living where we're at 'cuz we don't have to listen to the fireworks. However, this year I don't think ANYONE in this area will have to worry about it. Burn bans have been issued for most of Northwest KS, SW NE, and all of Colorado. Burn bans mean no private fireworks displays. They're not even allowing the sale of fireworks this year. Many nearby towns have also cancelled their public fireworks displays. I guess we'll have to find another way to celebrate this year...
I got everyone fed an watered. I lost a couple more Wellsummer chicks. This has been an awful bunch. They have dropped like flies for no obvious reason. I'm glad I didn't invest much in the eggs. I don't really need them any way. I just know they hens I had before brought really good money.
Trish I put my one lone peafowl egg that shows any kind of development in the hatcher. I am just not convinced it is viable. It developed obviously but normally I can see heartbeat or something in the eggs. I do hope your chick lives. I was hoping my peahen would hatch a batch this year and I would have some to sell to make up all the expense I have in their pen and building. I guess I'll wait and hope that next year is better.

Trish, I sure hope your pea chick pulls through. You've certainly done everything possible to make it happen.
My parents loved the fireworks, but they were always paranoid about letting us kids do anything. We weren't allowed to light the punks but we could hold them and hand them to Dad so he could light the fireworks; we weren't even allowed to use sparklers, with all those sparks flying off in every direction!
I used to like fireworks OK until last year. That's the year my dogs went crazy and now can't be together. Now I dread every boom and bang. We have both dogs drugged into oblivion for the duration.

It would take 2 years with no rain whatsoever to get a burn ban here, I think. If the feds don't issue one, the city won't even consider it. Not even if, being in the hole here, we've had no rain for weeks or months.

I got my two other peafowl chicks picked up today thanks to Shana & I just got back home with them. I've got to get out & move the turkeys to the dog run temporarily until I can get another pen built for them because they have outgrown the one they're in. Then I'm going to put the new peafowl chicks in where the turkeys were. They will have plenty of room for awhile. I'm hoping my other peafowl chick is still alive, I'm going down in a minutes to see & hopefully go introduce it to it's new friends. Maybe THEY can teach it to eat because I have given up. At least I know where to get some more now if I need them. They're kind of hard to find & so expensive. We'll see what my DH says about his surprise tomorrow when he sees them. These are starting to get their little thing on top of their head, whatever that is called, it's so cute! I'll take pics maybe tomorrow when they're settled in a bit.
Well better go move birds around & dog houses & then feed & water everyone again.
