Consolidated Kansas

I traded a pair of Blue Ameraucanas for some hatching egg a few weeks ago and that I got was not what I asked for so I have several chicks for sale I am sure some will be roos if the person with all the hens wants to raise them up :) Going to sell them for $2 each but will take $10 for all 7.

I am so sorry for all the loses everyone is having it is so hard raising them up and then the the weather turn so hot makes you feel helpless.

I am so glad this horrible day in hades is over! (Referring only to the heat, thankfully) I moved birds, I misted, I soaked feet in cool water and I worried endlessly about the birds. My poor turkey is normally nice and red on his face and neck but was totally white. I got him cooled down and he pinked up. What an ordeal. I hope to goodness we get some rain and some cooler temps tonight. I don't know how many more days my poor birdies can take this. I just feel so badly for them. We take them ice for their water but with no breeze today, they were really struggling. I'm liable to fill my entire craft room with birds, if this heat doesn't let up.

Yay! It looks like a bit of rain is headed our way!!!

Hey Chooks, hope everything was okay today with your birds. I can't imagine what we'd do without our well. What a nightmare! Our 4 chicks are all settled in!

Danz, the kids are enjoying the chicks immensely. They all said "I forgot how little they were". The tiny little Serama is their favorite! Chopper and crew are doing just fine hanging at the pond. Sorry to hear about your losses.

Maybe tomorrow we'll get a break from the heat?

Had friends over tonight for a swim and I am beat.

Danz- So sorry about your birds. What a bummer. I am so glad I shaved Molly this spring. I think I will take her in and cut her down again next week because she feels so much better. I know their coat provides protection but it also gets full of burrs, ticks and the heat is unbearable. I wish she would get in the pool and cool down like the puppy but I can't make her!

Trish- Forgot to say sorry about your pea baby! Such a bummer that it made it to hatch and even lived several days. I am glad your other two are doing well. This heat has just been awful.

Hechicken- The LGD is a big investment but I will tell you that you won't know what you did without one! I don't know what I did without the girls around. They are such good insurance against predators especially when I am asleep. I even feel safer here by myself with them because Molly is such a ferocious barker and sometimes being alone in the country with no neighbors within earshot can be a little scary. So just think livestock protection and personal protection all in one!!

Chooks-SO sorry about your water situation. I think I would die hauling that much water.

Everyone have a good night!

I saw on the radar we have rain on the way, yay! Maybe everything will get a little relief. I hate to see any creature suffer the way my birds & rabbits have been in this heat, it's just awful! It's even been unbearable in the shade. I hope you all get rain where you are too, that would be a welcome sight.

HeChicken, you would never be sorry you got a GP for an LGD, they're just awesome dogs. You just sometimes wonder how they know to do what they do, it's just instinctual for them. Yes, it is another thing to feed & care for, but so worth it for the peace of mind. I was devastated to think I might have lost one of mine, I don't know what I would do. Well I know I would have to get another one for sure, but Jasmine is so smart I would truly miss her & she is the leader, so that would be bad.

Nice, Hawkeye- You are brilliant. I wouldn't even know where to start on something like that!

Sapphire- Tomorrow, tomorrow it will be cooler and it will RAIN tonight!! Because I said so.

Danz- Have fun with your granddaughter!! Don't work and play too hard!\

Everybody watch your critters close! It is awful out today. I just finished watering and I think poor Molly was overheating. She was staggering around the yard like a drunk sailor such much to her dismay she got hosed off for 10 minutes and is feeling much better! At least the pup has the sense to lay in the wading pool!
Well, we got a little bit of rain. Enough to wet the top layer of sand out here. But, I'll take what I can get. Thankfully, it's cooler today. Sarge has a "secret" spot he goes when it gets too hot. He goes down under the trees at the back of the property where the water leaves the house from the heat pump system. It's like a little creek down there. He's all muddy on one side and from the knees down, lol. He also hates the water hose!
Trish, so sorry about the stress but glad she showed up. I guess you'll never know where she was. Our cat will disappear about once a year for anywhere from 2-4 days. We've never known where he goes or what he does but one evening he'll be at the door and that's that for another year.

So sorry also about the peachick. I was rooting for the little guy and the more days that went by and he was still with us, the more I thought he might make it.

Danz, sorry about the Orp. This has been a brutal summer so far. I've heard that there is supposed to be a cool change coming through tomorrow, and the high for the day Monday is only 80. Time to pull out sweaters and coats.

Then next week its supposed to be in the 90's all week. Just the news of a change coming through is making it easier for me to get through the day today.

Karen, I had such a great time visiting with you yesterday. Karen was kind enough to offer me some replacement birds for the ones I lost, and I now have Cyrus, a very large EE roo. He is only 5 months old so will probably still grow some, but he is HUGE already. He and the 2 sussex hens, EE hen (Suzette) and Aloha hen, are acclimating to their new environment and so far doing very well. I'm just so thrilled to have them.

Well, my Cuckoo Marans that I was sure was a goner after her fox attack, is hanging in there. For a couple of days she just looked shell-shocked. You know when they turn inwards and barely respond to their environment? She stood in one place all day and didn't pay any attention to anything going on around her. I lifted her on the roost at night, off the roost in the morning, and set her by feed and water but she wouldn't eat or drink voluntarily. I felt sure she wouldn't make it. Yesterday afternoon I decided to try to tempt her with an egg and to my surprise, she showed interest and then slowly started eating. Today she is still moving slowly and carefully but is looking more interested in life and doing a better job of moving to the coolest spot. At one point she went to stand in the waterer and best of all, when I took out some food scraps to them a few minutes ago, she looked interested and pecked at a grape. So I think maybe she'll make it. I'm so glad I treated all the wounds I could find with Neosporin. Hopefully it prevented infection and allowed her to just fight the shock and overcome. Fingers crossed.

I am also moving in the direction of a LGD. It is slow going because the DH is not excited about adding a new dependent. Fortunately, the current owner of the dog I hope to adopt has been very understanding and is being patient and allowing me to take some time. I hope to have her (the dog, not the owner) for a few days trial next week and see how she fits in with us. DH thinks its overkill to get a huge dog that has to be fed, wormed, vaccinated and cared for the rest of its life, just to guard a small flock of chickens. I can see his point but....I don't ever want to go out to that kind of devastation again. I enjoy my ducks and guineas in their own way but the chickens have such distinct personalities and I get to know them all. If I lose a duck or guinea it is feels like disappointment that it is a bird that won't be around to eat ticks, or raise a clutch of ducklings but when I lose a chicken, I am losing a bird I knew, individually from any other. It is not unlike losing a dog or cat, as each of them have their own place in our hearts. I still miss the Red Star I lost two years ago to my next-door neighbor's dogs - as many chickens as I've had, I've never had another just like her. So while I see DH's point, I also know I can't go through this heartache too many times before I quit because I can't take the losses any more.

I know if I said all of that to my wonderful, loving and mostly understanding family members, they wouldn't understand. I suspect most of you would.
Love my GP LGD ^_^
Thanks for the link I will check that out.
Bahh! I can't get the blinkie to work for me. ANYWAY,

Saw you on the FB page earlier, nice to have you here :)

Okay, I know this is a bad habit, but does anyone else end up running around barefoot? I'll go out for a smoke and think "I should go check on the birds real quick" So, I trot on out out the back yard, thinking I'm just gonna look and not go in the chicken yard. Inevitably, someone (Robin) will be stuck in a pen she wasn't supposed to be in, or one of the waterers will be empty or...well, you get the idea. Next thing I know, I'm barefoot in the chicken yard

. Honestly, I guess it really doesn't bother me or I would go get some shoes on, but I know it's gross and not very healthy. I just hate shoes and rarely wear them and wondered if anyone else shares my "problem".

Sapphire you're funny. I couldn't stand to walk around barefoot. My feet are too tender. But I do wear slides and get my feet wet and "muddy" (usually a consistency of poop and water in the pens) all the time. I can't even get my feet looking clean in the summer because they tend to attract dirt in every crevice. I am not in the least worried about being covered in poo; feet or any where else. It's just the nature of the beast. The only thing I truly hate is the duck pen sludge. That is nasty. You just can't move them often enough. I guess that is why I prefer to let my ducks all free range because then it's not such a mess.
We ended up only getting that one 30 second shower but it was a good shower while it lasted. I was surprised it wasn't cooler out this morning than it is. I hope there is some more rain in the forecast. I haven't checked. There was some ferocious lightening and thunder around us but it just didn't come through here again.
I hope the rest of you got some rain. They are talking more this morning but he sky looks clear.
I do hope these temp extremes are out of here for a while. I just checked the weather and it isn't supposed to be quite as cool as they were saying earlier it would be this week. Darn it!

It missed us completely. It looked like there was rain all around us -- pretty exciting lightning, but not a drop of rain. The forecast doesn't look real promising here, either.

It is a bit cooler this morning but we only got enough rain to barely wet the surface clay. The concrete was all dried off by this morning and the pond didn't gain anything from it, so I know it wasn't much. Fortunately, we do have some light cloud cover and I'm hoping to goodness we get some more rain.

Have a good day everyone!
