Trish, Sure seems to me that the 22% feed would work with the peafowl and turkeys. Mine are living on 16% with some extra goodies added now and then. It's not the actual protein that the birds need. In fact most of it isn't used by them. It is that it takes that higher amount of protein in order to get all the right nutrients, vitamins, and minerals they need. If you do some research on some
feed programs done by universities and such you will get a better idea of what makes a perfect diet. I personally recommend trying to duplicate nature. What is it that they would consume naturally if they were wild. You can watch them and get a good idea.
Yep Josie I would recommend you let your dogs know that the chickens are part of what you want them to protect. If it takes housing some young birds with them I'd do it. My guess is that Mollie is feeling like she shouldn't look at the birds because she has heard Lucie get scolded for chasing them and chewing etc etc. I'm not saying it will be instant success especially with Lucie but putting chickens with her that don't run and telling her No if she starts to grab them is the only way she will learn.
I know some dogs just have a chase instinct that once they get it, is impossible to get out. I think Lucie is young enough she can still learn.

Mine aren't limping or swelling either in most cases. The scab is pretty clear on my girls (and Butch) though. He is the only one limping.
I've noticed round spots on two of my birds feet..... could it be bumblefoot even if they aren't limping or showing any swelling or any other symptoms???

Trish I'll bet if some predator was after those chickens you'd find the dogs are bonded to them. Yes they protect the property but they also bond to what is there. i.e. I have wild turkeys and I have pheasants. They totally just ignore them because they know they belong here. But you put a wild pheasant or wild turkey within a quarter of a mile and they will be after it because it's not one they are bonded to. It's not bonding like a baby duck would bond to it's mother. It's bonding in the sense that they are part of what they know to protect. I guarantee you if a chicken starts squawking in distress around here you can hear the dogs paws pounding on the ground and them barking or growling to come get whatever is bothering their birds.
I just discovered one young black chick that died this afternoon. After this heat I will feel very lucky if it is the only one. I put mega bunches of frozen bottles out today. But there just isn't enough you can do in this heat.

More pictures! Yay!

Here's Chopper, Chopper & Crew, Misti, Misti playing peekaboo. I have really worked to keep water in that pond and the algae out! It is so worth it to watch them play, dive, and explore. All of the ducks are together without any problems. I had them integrated but then, Chopper changed his mind about the newest members. I separated him, then penned them altogether for several days in the chicken yard and finally, all is well. Chopper has stopped being bossy in favor of mating! Hooray for hormones! The best thing is that he still is the spokesduck if they need something. He really has taken to certain of the kids. I have two kids in particular that can just scoop him up and he's good. If you want to see a bigger pic, just click.

Okay, so just when you thought I was done, I have to share one more! This is my little Swedish Flower who hatched yesterday. My first one! Isn't it just the sweetest little thing? Trish44, did you have some that looked like this one? It has lots of yellow on its breast -- so pretty. It's a lively little thing and hanging out in my bedroom inside the hovabator. I really didn't think it was going to hatch but yay!

Aw! Karen, You made me smile. I miss the ole Chop sometimes. Looks like you have way too many boys though! Maybe I'd better start hatching you some more girls!! I must have been thinking about you. I just did some reading on the Aloha project. I love Ricky and Rigsby. They look perfect. I hadn't even taken the time to read much about it until today.
I honestly started reading it because I hadn't seen pictures of your Alohas. They were still pretty young when we were there.
Reminds me while ago I had a plate full of pepper seeds and stems etc. I had everyone of the sussex eating out of my hand. Love those birds. They are so beautiful. I've decided to throw a couple eggs in to test fertility. I don't know which are sussex and which are orpington. My orpington roo is still too young to breed so I won't have any purebred orps. But Mr. sussex has been working very hard to take care of his girls so there surely would be some pure breds. The eggs are all still tiny but that doesn't mean they can't be fertile.

Too sweet! I love the chick in the cup picture!

Yesterday I let the pekins out and got tickled at how much they were enjoying me spraying them with the water hose. Here are some pics DH took. Then a crowd gathered and everyone wanted sprayed.Click to enlarge.

I am scared of mean roos, I got flogged a lot as a small child which is why I like my bantam cochin and orp boys, they are so sweet.

Hhhmmm..... do you think I could have a problem??? I suppose I should get a picture to show you what it looks like so you can tell me if it is something to worry about or not.

Great pictures Danz! I love the one where the duck is trying to drink and bathe at the same time-- they look pretty happy! You are looking fabulous! So funny, I love all of your pens! Looks like bird haven out there! It also looks like you have several mature trees with quite a bit of shade. How on earth are you having so much trouble with the heat when I have zero shade? Your place looks far more ideal than mine. Lucky you with all those beautiful trees! LOVE it!
