Love, love, love all the photos!!!! Those pea chicks and rare birds are so much fun to check out! Thanks for sharing them!

I am never going to get caught up though..... Can only remember a few things from skimming. Sorry!!

Trish, your little calico kitten is so precious. I am envious!

I am glad Tory is staying..... I know it is going to be tough to help her learn to do what you want her to do, but it does sound like she is a smart dog and can learn.... And that she likes her new family very much:). I used to show dogs, then helped with rescue. It is absolutely amazing how much a dog who feels safe and cared for can relearn in a new situation.

This bumble foot stuff looks like the sebaceous cysts poodles can get. Yuck..... I am a bit hesitant to check my girls out for it, but it is all good info! Thanks for sharing! At least now I will know what it is and what to do.

I was able to rehome my little bantam Cochin roo almost instantly after posting him on Craig's list. I gave him to the first person able to come get him and was really shocked that 5 people were able to take him that same evening! I think he will be happy in his new home. I definitely am going to be looking for a bantam Cochin pullet someday. They really are sweet.

Sunflowerparrot, your new job sounds nice :) I love my teaching job, it is the job I would do for free- the kids parts that is. As the red tape and other things have evolved into the majority of the job, however, I have considered taking in a couple of kids and just focusing on helping them at home... I am not sure yet if I am ready for that leap yet. I do love the controlled chaos of a well structured SpEd classroom :) Boredome is never a problem!

Our outlet outside is dead, no clue why, so my birds haven't had a fan today. The mister has made a muddy mess of their run. I had to put straw down so they weren't muddy too... I am having to clean out the straw daily. It gets soaked! Any ideas on how to keep it dryer? Wet attracts flies..... I hate flies! I put out a couple of fly traps but they smell sickening! Like a rotting corpse... Just disgusting. I have to figure something else out. Can't let these birds suffer in the heat....even if it is more work and messier.

I am going to the Lawrence Poultry section at the fair tomorrow. Are any of you showing birds there?

Medawinks - I used to teach too and then got VERY tired of all the other stuff that goes on.. lack of support, blame and finger pointing, wasted meetings just to say you had a meeting, etc.. I then became a Case Manager for adults with MR/DD - love it! But also am looking forward to this next adventure - tomorrow!!!! Where do you teach (if you don't mind sharing that info.. )

Medawinks, I've had terrible problems with my outside outlets and it almost always turns out to be the GFCI has tripped. If you can find the GFCI that "protects" that outlet and push the "reset" button, that might be all the fix it needs. If that fails, the next think I'd check is your circuit board. If anything is set to the "off" position, push it back to the "on" position. And if neither of those things is the problem then I'm all out of ideas.

You are right that Tory is smart although she did have occasion to make DH question her intelligence. I was outside and he was in the house when we heard her start barking like crazy. We ran from different directions to see what was up. There she was at the corner of the house, barking like mad. Every few seconds, she'd run around the corner, stop and bark some more. I doubled over laughing when I realized....she had caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window (there is one on each side of the corner) and was convinced there was a great big white dog in the house that didn't belong. DH just sighed in disgust and said "I thought you said this dog was smart".

It reminded me of the time Sammie, one of our other dogs, discovered mirrors. She was in our bedroom and noticed there was a dog in there. She stood on her hind legs to examine it. The mirror was on a wall of our room that backed onto DD's bedroom, so once Sammie realized there was another dog there that might want to play with her, she got down and raced around to DD's room to start the play session. Totally disappointed there was no dog there, she came back to re-check. Yep - there is definitely a black dog there and it really looks like its in DD's room. She actually went back to double check she hadn't missed a dog in the room before giving up. I guess mirrors/reflections would be really confusing if you didn't understand how/why they work.

Oh, it works! I had to re size the picture and make it a bit smaller. Anyway, here is my new pea cage/flight pen for the baby peas! I got it from a lady that was moving into town and had it for sale on craigslist. She was a wildlife rehabilitator and used it for squirrels, wild birds and owls!

Just got home with it on the trailer, it was a long, slow drive!
The peas!
Josie, awesome pen!

HEChicken, loved the dog stories. LOL!

It's official, I've gone mad as a hatter.

All the birds in the craftroom were just done last night. I have one Wellie that may not make it in spite of my best efforts. The Ameraucanas were all wilted like daisies and the poor lavs were just barely hanging in there. We tried everything and it just wasn't working. A couple Wellies had stopped eating and drinking and were just limp. That's when I lost it. The kids and I loaded them all up in carriers and took them to my bedroom to cool off in the A/C. I thought, well this is going to go over well but maybe DH can stand it for one night. As soon as he came home from work I told him what to expect and he just took it like a man. Later, when we were putting the birds up for the night, I discovered a New Hamp that was honking so I scooped her up and took her in the house not knowing where I was going to put her. Then it came to me! The bathtub of course with its enclosure was perfect. I laid out old towels and put her in there with feed and water and then I went to watch the Olympics. DH was working on our thermostats, which have been cooling the house to 69 degrees (can't wait to see that electric bill). When he was finished (all fixed) he sat down and I casually said "Honey, there's a chicken in our bathtub" he was very quiet and then said "Did the heat get to it"? I said "yes, I'm afraid it was going to die" "Okay" he said. I thought to myself that this truly was the man of my dreams!!! He went up to bed before I and when I got there he calmly said "Could you find someplace else for the birds tomorrow? My allergies are going crazy, so I took an Allegra, but this isn't going to work". I said very meekly "I'm so sorry. I'll figure out something else". Yikes, poor guy! What a sweetheart, though! Anyway, most of the birds are ready to go back out, but I'm going to have to really work with them today to keep them going. A couple of them will have to stay in but that won't be as difficult to manage. I think the heat has gotten to me. What was I thinking to stack my bedroom full of chickens?

I've got to figure something out for these birds. I just cannot bring them all in the house but I can't stand to see them suffer, either.

wow--- LOVE this!!!! I want one!! LOL! (the pen, not the birds)

Love the pen, Josie! Very nice. I could use about 10 of those. My peachick is still in the house. Did you get 4 peachicks? I am trying to count in the picture.
I have a baby lemon cuckoo who is gasping a little and sneezing. How can you catch a cold when you are inside in a bin that has been disinfected and you are with the chicks you were hatched with. My peachick is in the same bin. I gave the chick a little vet RX and put probitiotics in their water. I have some tylan injectable but no powder and I don't feel I could inject a chick that young without over dozing. Anyone have any ideas? I don't want to loose any birds.
I had one of my biggest best cochin hens dead this morning. I assume she must have died late yesterday. I didn't go in the hen house to check after about 3Pm but all was well up until then.
I also had one other young pullet die after I put her in a cage with some other pullets. They were mostly in the shade and had water but she must have gotten too hot.
I thought it felt better out today but the chickens seemed to suffer more.
DH says it is because it has been so prolonged. Their systems are weakened by day after day of this heat. I think he may be right.
The Denagard I bought is just put in the water and I used it for 5 days and it pretty much cleared up all the sneezing and crackly lungs. I had my chicks drinking the water. It says it is self adjusting for weight because a small chick won't drink as much as a larger bird. So anyway, going on that theory, I hoped the chicks wouldn't overdose themselves. I can't say it's cheap though. That part is a bummer. But I think it's going to last forever, because you only use 15mm in a gallon of water. I measured it out with a small shot glass that has mm listed on the side of it. The bottle is pretty big.

HEChicken said it first-- but I bet you have tripped a breaker out there. Just flip it, and I bet it comes back on.

Can you find a cheap window AC unit on Craigslist and install it in your craft room?? That would be my first idea. It might not even be that expensive to run. They make those little covers that fit into the opening of the window to keep them sealed and you can even tape around them.

Karen, you crack me up! You and I are so much alike. I have bins and cages all over my house because I can't just let something suffer. They get moved but they always come back. Your husband is a keeper for sure.
The little lemon cuckoo died during the night and now I am really worried. I just changed bins and bedding yesterday evening. It seems like it would have surely had a problem before that. I am just totally confused where a cold might have come from. I guess I'll keep pouring on the probiotics and try to watch every one really close. Maybe I'm not supposed to raise these pretty birds after all. I sure seem to have lousy luck with them. I am starting to wonder about feed now. I wonder if it is possible that some viruses can come from the chick starter. With all the other problems lately I guess it is possible. I am using Purina right now, but not one of the recalled lot numbers.
I'll check into the denagard. My apothecary keeps growing. Probably won't order it though unless I have another bird come down with a cold. I have duramycin, tylan, and baytril all here already. It's just that I keep encountering some new problem like in this case, a young chick that I don't know how to dose. I do like the idea of self adjusting on dosage. That is the biggest worry I had about Baytril. I was too worried I was over dosing with it.

HA ha ha ha ha ha....That is funny. you need to put a window unit on that shed you finished up. Cool those poor birds off in there.

It could also be the heat. Doesn't the heat cause stress which then would suppress the immune system?
