Consolidated Kansas

Remember, she is just a puppy and will need training before she is ready to be with the chickens 24/7. Even LGD's go through puppy bad behavior. Be patient with her. She is in reality just a baby.

Ack! So, it seems that the puppy I was going to get in the next few months turned out to be a male! But - there was one female from the last litter and the person who was supposed to come get her changed her mind. So - tomorrow, I will have my puppy! I am so not ready or prepared... Her name will be Fern, she is 10 week old and a Great Pyrenees :)

So - what do I need????? I am going to get:

Leash
Collar
Tag made with my phone number engraved on it (PetSmart does that)
Plastic swimming pool for her to lie in/next to
Bag of food she is currently eating
What else do I need???

She is going to sleep in the chicken coop with the chickens during the night and be in the little fence with them during the day. I am glad tomorrow is going to be a little cooler. I want to walk with her a few times a day around the entire perimeter of the property on leash/collar so she 1) learns to walk with a leash and collar 2) learns the boundaries. This will give me good time with her to train and praise.

Awesome!!! Don't forget the bowls to put in water/food if you don't have anything yet, and maybe a bone or two to chew on - she's in the puppy phase of wanting to chew on everything at that age! Does she have all of her shots? What about flea/tick prevention? Just ransacking my memory of our last dog acquiring :)

I have to agree with some of the others. She will probably get bored and end up hurting chickens. Ask me, i know from experience :( I have my LGD out roaming free now. He doesn't hurt the chickens if they get out of the pen and he protects them from predators. But, I have lost a few to him when he was 4-5 months old, because I had him penned up with the birds. It was a pen that was as big as a city back yard. At first, he didn't bother them, but then one day it started, and I lost chickens every day for 2 weeks before I figured out what was going on. He was bored and needed to patrol. He wasn't TRYING to hurt the chickens, otherwise they would be torn apart and bloody. He just got excited when they got excited and got them cornered. Then, he started "grooming" them which ripped their neck feathers out and also ripped open their neck skin. They are great dogs, though and will serve their purpose well if allowed to do their job. I hope your puppy is as great of a dog as mine. I LOVE this breed!

I will be meeting with the breeder when I go and get her - I have tons of questions for her :) Thanks for the reminder about the shots, etc. I'm so excited and a little nervous too - I just want to make sure I do what is best for her to be able to do her job and what is best for the chickens too!

Sunflowerparrot, If you have an old pair of leather tennis shoes it makes the best possible chew toy for those dogs. Your pup is at the age she will be chewing on everything. And she is going to seem huge when thinking in terms of a puppy at that stage. These pups grow really fast initially.
It's going to be another busy day. I was sure hoping for some of the rain they forecasted but no luck again. At least it is just 70 degrees this morning. Sure wish it would stay cool the rest of the day.
I've got another dinner at church today and need to get some eggs ready for someone at church too. Why is it when you have the fewest eggs you have the most customers? I'll be having some girls molt here in another couple months and I'll be short again. I don't really make money off of eggs but it gives me pocket change I guess.
I really really just wanted to sleep in this morning. I've been getting up later the last few mornings and got my whole schedule messed up.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! I had a pretty good day yesterday. My brother came down from Lawrence to see me and we had lunch at Panera, one of my favorite places to eat. Then later in the evening we had a sitter come and we all went out minus kids and ate at another fav restaurant-- Savutes.

Anyway, for once we are skipping church in favor of getting some things done around here. My DH is on the tractor doing some stuff and is going to put a round bale out for me. My brother is leaving after lunch, but before that happens, he is going to come over here and check out my chickens and his coop. His coop still isn't done. Sigh. It's missing a roof. :(

Danz, sounds like you just need the sleep if you are so tired. Sometimes it's good to catch up on it. :)

sunflower i would get lots of chew toys they love to chew.

hawkeye happy belated birthday

We are loving this cool morning we slept with windows open last night and still have them open this morning its nice. I have to try and do something to keep our electric bill down. The bill i just received was crazy.

Well It doesn't feel any cooler to me this afternoon. Of course I'm being a grouch today so who knows.
I woke up very congested and have spent my entire day blowing my nose. I am feeling really crappy, I have no idea what set off my allergies so bad. I doubled up on my prescription and OTC meds this morning but I'm still blowing and going. It's making me feel crummy. The only thing I've gotten done since I got home from our church dinner is feed and water the brooder house and change the bin for the chicks inside. I moved some more of them out to the brooder. I'm down to just lemon cuckoos and the peachick in here for now. In the next 10 days or so I'll have another eggplosion though and then I'll be looking for places to put chicks.
I'm going to try to sex all the chicks that hatch so if anyone is wanting some cockerels to grow for butchering if you come get them after they are hatched they will be free.
Well they just put a ban on any outside watering in town. I am holding my breath that doesn't happen out here. I have to water my birds!!! I've let the flower bed turn crispy even though I am sure I have thousands of dollars in it. I've only watered the veggie garden a tiny bit and most of it has been recycled water. But I can't let the birds die. Just filling water for them to drink won't do it either. They have to have water to cool down in as well.
DH is out watering the ground so the ground rods work and the electric fence will work. I need to drain the duckpond and refill it but that will give part of the garden a much needed drink.
I'm thinking the fall auctions are going to be bringing some sad prices. Could be a time to stock up on what I want ....of course that means having to feed them over the winter.
Ah heck just a couple weeks of nice light non -stop rain would fix us all up.

Ugh, my allergies were acting up this morning too. I did turn off the air conditioner and open all the windows, but I think I'm going to have to turn it on in the next few hours...

Our well ran dry last October, and we hauled water until March. It's almost gone now, but we live only a mile from a Government well that we can take from. (THANK GOD!) It's been scary though. And it doesn't help that I started reading The Grapes of Wrath.

Quote: She is up to date on her shots and worming :) Was actually wormed again this morning.... she has had flea treatment too... she was all ready for me when the breeder and I met. The breeder is awesome - this is not just some GP that had puppies - she specifically breeds for good dogs and knows her stuff. Trish has 2 of her puppies too (well, not so much pups anymore!) I got her a collar, retractable leash, pig ears, rubber ball attached to a chew rope.. she's in the fenced area now and all the other animals left her lol.. poor puppy - chickens are afraid of her!

She was raised with chickens - she slept in the coop with them and does well. I will keep an eye on her though to make sure my chickens are safe. She will sleep in a large crate for several weeks at night, but be in the fenced area with the chickens during the day. We have quite a bit of acreage and I am going to walk her on the leash around the perimeter several times a day (mostly morning and evenings right now since it is so hot). When she gets another month older, I will try her without the leash to train her to stay within the boundaries. We will not be fencing.
