Hawkeye the serama chicks are so small they walk right through chicken wire. Hardware cloth is about the only thing they don't walk through. She still has them In a nest box and they probably will be getting thirsty soon. They are pretty difficult to keep alive in general but it makes it harder if they are in with other adult birds. I have a little bantam polish I may throw in with her too if I can get away with it. I don't have any dog kennels I'm not already using.

Could you put her in a rubbermaid container in the house? I have a serama hen in the house with chicks that just hatched yesterday. She was really ticked when I first moved her but she settled down right away with her clutch. I just turned the light out for a bit and then turned it back on after they settled down.

I should snap a few pics of these babies. Hawkeye- They are like 1/2 inch long at hatch, they are the most ridiculously tiny chicks ever, it is amazing.

Howdy to everyone else. Would love to stay and chat but must get on the road! I am off to pick up my trio of buff laced brahmas today, I can't wait!! Will post pics of the new beauties soon!!!!!

Can't wait to see your pics, Josie. I figured she would jump out of rubbermaid bin. I guess it might be worthwhile to try. What's a few more chickens in the house any way??

I took some of my older chicks out of the bin in the house and put them in the brooder house last night. This silly peachick cried all night. She still has chicks with her but I guess I took her buddies!

Hello all! I have a question about my goose. I believe she has "angel wing" in her left wing. The wing is sticking out from her body and not lying flat. Her other wing did this for a while as well, but it eventually laid back down like it should with no intervention from me. However, her left wing is still sticking out and has not gone back to lying flat by itself.

Some background: I only have one goose, and s/he is still too young to positively identify as male or female. I have named her Lucy for now, but will change it to Luke if she turns out to be a he. Anyway, I feed my whole flock "16% poultry all-purpose poultry crumbles" that I buy from Orscheln's. I also let them free range from about 6am to 8pm. Lucy is approximately 2 months and one week old. When I first got her, she had a major case of Niacin deficiency, and I nearly lost her. I've worked really hard to keep her alive thus far and will do what I can to help this problem.

Any suggestions on what I should do for her?

Lizzy get some vet wrap, tuck the end of the wing up sightly under the other part of it and vet wrap it together. If it is up higher in the top joint you will have to vet wrap her body as well. I think it is normally the bottom joint of the wing though. If you can, give her some nutri-drench or poly vi sol vitamins either by mouth or in her water.
Leave the wing wrapped for 5-7 days and it should be back in place.

Thank you for the suggestion! I don't have any vet wrap on hand, so I'll have to wait 'till I go to town tomorrow. Where do I find nutri-drench and poly vi sol?

Fern's first 24 hours... I probably loved on her too much last night - I just couldn't help it :) We went for walks, I worked some with "sit" and gave her pieces of her dinner while working on that for about 10 times... then gave her the rest of her meal in her dish. She is so good. So sweet and you can just tell she wants to be pleasing. We walked around the boundaries that I'm letting her believe are the boundaries - basically, only about 2-3 acres instead of the entire 27! This way, when she goes out of her boundaries, she is still on our property. I put her in the large dog crate last night and put the crate in the fence at the chicken coop. (The chickens were petrified of her! They are starting to tolerate her being in the fence with them.. as long as she doesn't come too close). This morning, I could smell her a mile away lol.. fed her, shook my head at the literal mess she made in the crate and decided to just lie back down in it :) I put her in the little chicken coop (chickens were already out free ranging at this point) for about an hour while I ran to town (This will be my morning routine M-F). I ran to Walmart and picked up a little plastic pool.

Came home and gave her a bath! A much needed bath! She then hung out with me while I was piddling around... then went to the shaded area which happens to be the coop area :) She has been with the chickens for about 4 hours today. Everyone seems to be at peace :)

She is going to the vet on Friday morning for her shot series (she has had 2 and the 3rd one is due this week).

And of course, no post is worth reading without a picture!

sounds like its not going too bad

do you all have a brooder or do you just let your hens do it natural? I found this picture and asked DH if he could make one for me and he said yes not sure if he know what it is but he said yes. What does your brooder look like and where do you keep it?
