DH suggested this morning that covering the water bowl with a box overnight should keep it protected from wind that makes it freeze faster. I dunno. Worth a try, I guess.

Yeah thats true. Im just shocked it was that cold! On the other hand my birds were happy as can be!
My heated water bowl had ICE all around the top edge, but the water in the bottom was not frozen. There was also a puddle of ice on the floor of the coop right in front of the water bowl. I'm not sure how that got there
I work till 3 a.m. and get to bed between 4 and 5 a.m. I don't always get out to the coop much before 11 a.m. I wish I had gone sooner this morning. I had 7 eggs.... 3 of which were already frozen.
I had a slight ice ring starting around the upper rim on both the indoor and outdoor waterers first thing this morning, but that was it. The indoor one I have a thermometer in the lower part and it read 38.4 degrees. It was 2 degrees outside then, so I can't complain. Only had 1 frozen egg so far. Don't know when it was laid though as it wasn't in the nest box.
I'm a big meanie. I made a breakfast of whole scrambled eggs and oatmeal this morning and booted everyone but the chicks out around noon. Many of the younger birds were out yesterday and today. The "old biddies" hadn't been outside for at least 3.
First its always good to hear from all of you. Ironically; it seems that we were just talking about heated waters/ buckets etc just weeks ago. I have a heated water can (light bulb) but daily carry a 5 gal bucket mostly full to the duck bath so every one can bathe or drink.
Now new subject; boiling eggs I think I have it. Been trying several methods and the two best seem to be salt in the water and the big end poke!
some friends over Christmas said they had some tool that poked an hole in the big end of the egg so it boild correctly. I had been using salt and a long soak but tried the poke and it worked on every egg. Results; salt yes! Big end poke Yes makes perfect boiled eggs every time!
YOUR WELCOME!

I know it takes about one hour to hard boil an egg on my wood stove.
I have told ya that a good thirty minute boil makes a perfect boiled duck egg.
Happy to see everyone made it through the cold! Enjoy the next two days of above freezing temps!!! The girls and boys are going to think a heat wave hit
My cuckoo maran girls are laying strong, anyone up for some chics?
I just got off the phone with my Dad. I asked him if I could borrow a few of his sap spigots. He tells me "Heck no i never had as many things as i do now that you kids have moved out". I about died laughing, stomache still hurts. Anyhow guess I will be buying mine now.
