Try to find penicillin without procaine in it which is close to impossible. You might be able to safely dose with penicillin with procaine a couple times but it is really dangerous in birds and can cause paralysis and breathing problems to the point where they can't breath on their own. I have penicillin in the fridge and I have used it a few times only once in a bird but I am really nervous about the side effects. This is the major problem with using these drugs in chickens when it is off label because without an extensive veterinary manual it is hard to know what it actually treats and if there are side effects.

Hawkeye-I found some info on the novartis website about Denagard and their recommended dosing is about half what you were using. I thought you might be interested in this. Here is a link recommending 2 ml of denagard per liter of water so just shy of 8 ml to a gallon of water. http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Nov...w_v_Concentrate_for_Oral_Solution/-28468.html

Trying to med birds is so frustrating!!!

Oh, and there was a giant black snake trying to get into to my chick hoop house this morning!
barnie.gif
I wacked it over the head several times with a grain scoop then ran to grab a rake but it was gone when I got back. Hope it doesn't come back.
oh no! Since I read that, I've been trying to find anything on line that says it can cause those effects. But I'm not finding it! I've read on PoultrySite and of course BYC and some study done on how much to give on the G Procaine. The only thing that I read over and over again is that G Procaine is more concentrated and can not be given every single day and instead must be given every other day. Only 1/4 cc in the breast. I have no other option, this bird is going to die if I do nothing. Her leg is on fire, it's soooo hot. My gut says she is in BIG trouble. Anyway, you're right, I did buy the Pen G Procaine, I'm glad you mentioned that, because it led me to the correct dosing and read further into it. I sure hope the every other day will be better. SO glad I found that, I'd have given it to her every day! I didn't read the Denagard dosage yet, I'll do that when I get the bird taken care of. Sigh. Thanks for the link, though!! I'll read it!

Hawkeye, I'm sorry about your hen, I hope you can get an antibiotic that will work & get her well.

I was just pooped to the point of almost being sick last night, I went to bed with a headache, but I slept until almost 11 today & I feed better. I went out & was putting some straw in the dog house in the grow-out pen & saw that one of my little Swedish Flower Hen chicks had died in there. It looks like they all crowded into a corner & it got trampled. I don't know why those silly chickens are always doing that it seems like. So anyway I'm down one Swedish Flower Hen chick now, darn. I have brought all of the chicks out of my utility room outside now so there are no more chicks in the house thank goodness. I don't mind having some in there temporarily but I don't like them to stay too long. It's just a mess trying to keep crates clean. That was one reason why I wanted to take the top off the dog house out there was to check on the little Cream Legbar pullet & make sure she's still OK & so far she is, but is staying mostly in the dog house. She's smaller than most of the other chicks out there, so she probably gets picked on.

Well we're off to a BBQ at Sunflowerparrot's place this afternoon & it seems like a pretty nice day for it. I hope you all have a good day!
Thanks Trish, she's not doing very well. She is walking around and is acting like nothing is going on-- but that leg is inflamed and I think she doesn't have much time left. I'm sooo sorry about your Swedish hen!! That is terrible!

Danz, I feel bad about your little duck that is having a hard time breathing. She must have something in her lungs-- probably a chunk of dirt. So terrible. I'd just keep doing what you are and give it your best. It's all you can do.

We have such a great group here!! All of us are so willing to go that extra mile to help our birds. I LOVE it. Love to see people that are just like me.

Okay--- off to shoot up my birdie and pray her infection is overcome by the antibiotic!! Here we go!

Trish it was kind of cool during the night. Maye they got chilled. I actually had the heat lamp on in one section of the brooder house last night. First time in months. I had some new chicks in there and they were chilly.

Here is my poor dog Gnomeo(black & white one) who was hit by a car a few days ago with his buddy George. He is getting better but is still having a hard time getting around so i have to carry him in and outdoors

That snake was probably having eggs for breakfast. They make me so mad. I have 6 million mice here and the stupid snakes come in and eat eggs. I usually have a shovel or a hoe nearby and it's off with their heads!
Josie my duck is still wheezing. I think she has something caught in her throat. I have no idea how I would find that out for sure until she dies. She is really loosing weight and the baytril hasn't helped any. Poor thing. I wish I had a laproscope and could go in and take whatever is in there out. Her mouth is very dry cause she chokes when she drinks. Makes me think she is just hanging on at this point.
Do you think the snake would eat a 3 month old chick? That was where it was trying to get in....but it is also right next to the duck pen and the ducks have been laying behind that hoop house. Your poor duck, I wonder could you try a little tiny bit of vegetable oil? Maybe if something is stuck it would help it get loose? I have no idea short of taking her to the vet. I have a great horse vet up here in Louisburg that you could try if you wanted. Let me know if you want their number, they have treated my geese in the past when we had an emergency.

Hawkeye- Hope your girl feels better! I have dosed with penicillin before in desperation and have had birds that did fine, just wanted you to know that has been a noted side effect of the drug in birds which is why it is not listed for use in poultry when it has procaine in it. Poor thing. Best of luck and I hope she is feeling better soon!

Trish- I had a chick get squished last week outside when it first started getting cooler so I put a small light out in their hoop house and have had no more accidents. I think they got chilly and started piling on top of each other in the dark.

Josie I'll try the veggie oil. Then when I see you tomorrow we can talk about the vet if that doesn't help. She isn't a valuable duck but she is one of my breeders.
My silly geese are eating through the electric poultry netting!!!! I could scream. It's not turned on cause the ground is too dry and we just can't get connectivity. Now I'm going to have to repair it before we can turn it on again.
I threw them a tennis shoe today hoping they'd find it fun to chew on. But so far they are just yelling at it.
I've got nothing done today but the essentials. I am just totally dragging.

Had one of the most wonderful days! Boyfriend took the coop and moved it out into the yard! Next is the roof and trim - then time to move the chickens into their new home (pics coming at some point in my life!) Then Trish and her husband came over for great food (delicious dip!!) and good conversation :) We sat outside and watched Fern, cats, and chickens - though the chickens weren't too social and went and did their own thing. We even enjoyed (enjoyed may be too strong of a word here lol) steamed cattail roots with butter and pepper - not too bad really.

Fern continues to get a little hyper around the chickens and seems to want to scare/play with them - I grab her, roll her to her back and yell "no" - seems to work for the time being, but worried this is becoming a game. Once they're in the new coop, they'll be able to get away from her on their roost - they don't really have a way with the current coop to get away from her other than run out the door.. which she then follows. I will keep working with her - she is smart and seems to want to do the right thing.

Hope everyone had a great weekend - Monday, here we come!

Poor little guy! I hope he heals fast so he can get up on his own. Sounds like he is in a lot of pain. :(

Yeah, I'm desperate! I know penicillin works on staph/bacterial infections, so this is all I've got to work with. I hope she can handle this drug.

ha! A tennis shoe for geese! So funny! Bad birds for chewing your nice electric fence!! Wow! I sure hope your duck comes around.

Sounds awesome about the coop! Take some pics, get them posted!! Funny you tried steamed roots from the cattail....don't think that would be high on my list of things to eat, but I guess it would be fun to try once. So neat that you and Trish can get together!

Well, my bird is fine after her first dose of penicillin. She managed to get up on the top roost and is sitting there tonight when I went in to check on her. OH!! And this is really odd--- I put out a bunch of golf balls into the nest boxes because the birds would only use ONE box and they would fight over it and if a bird was in there, then they would lay on the floor instead. UGH. So I put in two golf balls in each nest. I went to collect eggs and noticed the girls were using the other boxes for the FIRST time!! WOOHOO!! But here's the crazy thing.... I am missing a golf ball!?!? One nest has ONE golf ball in it.... what the heck??? I looked in the main coop and didn't see it. Wonder where it went?? Isn't that odd?

Sunflowerparrot, we had a nice afternoon at your place too, it was good to get out & actually see other people & visit. We don't have much of a social life with my DH's work schedule working 2nd shift & 6 days a week. It was nice meeting your BF too so I could put a face with the name. It really was a nice day to sit outside too & enjoy the cooler weather. Your coop is coming along really nicely, I can't wait to see it all done. The cattail roots actually weren't too bad, we decided they would be good in a stir fry or with some other veggies. If you all could see how many of those things Sunflowerparrot has you wouldn't wonder why she is looking for things to do with them. For those who don't know Sunflowerparrot & I both live on the edges of Winfield, so all we have to do is drive across town to visit, so it's nice to have a friend so close that understands my chicken addiction. The little roo that went to her place looks like he is fitting in nicely with her girls & is comfortable there, so that worked out perfect. I think he might be a little more aggressive than the other one she had though & maybe that is why Fern is having a little more of a problem with him. I sure hope he teaches her as he gets older to leave the hens alone just like my rooster did her sisters.

I went out tonight after I did all my chores & took a big long extension cord out to the grow-out pen so I could hook up a heat lamp out there in case the young chicks get too cold. Then they can kind of get in a huddle in the heat. They looked fine when I was out there, but it may get cooler out there tonight. I noticed the younger ones stay in the dog house a lot of the time, I guess they're more comfortable in there, but there was a pretty full roost of chicks tonight so they're using that now more rather than sitting on the ground like they used to. I think they can tuck their feet under them on that 2x4 & keep warmer than sitting on the ground.

Hawkeye, I have a ceramic fake egg I just keep in one of my nests & once in awhile the hens just kick it out onto the floor, I wonder if that's what yours did with the golf ball?

I hope the heat lamp makes them happier and they don't crowd themselves. My silkies naturally do a dog pile at night anyway-- even in the hot, hot summer, they dog pile. Last night I noticed a few of them shivering when the temps dropped down. A lot of them are only around 3 months old, so they are still young. But it's a really cute deal-- there is just a mound of fluff with beaks sticking out every which way. You can't even tell which is a head until you see the beak. They have the crowding down to an art.

Maybe JosieChick's snake got it.

Hilarious!!! Eh, maybe Trish is right, and I need to do a better search of the coop and floor. It wasn't obvious, so maybe it go burried under the shavings somewhere. Except that I know it was there earlier, because I check the nest boxes a couple times a day. I just naturally count golf balls when I do it. I hope a chicken didn't swallow one!
