Consolidated Kansas

When I thought we were giving Tory up, I had posted her on CL and had a guy respond who said he wanted her, and I had to write and tell him she was no longer available. Give me a minute to look through my inbox and try to find his email again and I'll pm you his contact info.

Thanks! That would be great. I was thinking about posting her down in Wichita too because we could easily bring her down there. I am sad to see her go but she will be a fabulous working dog for someone. She works really hard here at night and I worry about Molly without her for the time being. We are working on finding a pyr breeder that has dogs similar to Molly in looks and hopefully in personality too!

We had the funniest thing happen this morning. My granddaughter & the girlfriend & I went out & were standing looking at the turkeys & my granddaughter started making this sound at them. All of the sudden the tom turkey started displaying for her & just fanning his tail & dancing around & gobbling it was just hilarious. He really put on a show for them & I just laughed my head off at him. I have never seen a turkey turn & twist his tail around the way he was doing, it was almost like he was a fashion model & he was doing all of these poses.
Happy Birthday Trish!
Sorry it my wish is coming so late in the day.
It was a good day but I am exhausted and the house is a mess again. No matter what all that dirt outside gets tracked in.
Company is finally gone. I only got 5 hours sleep last night so I am ready to chill. Wish I didn't have to get up in the morning. I would probably sleep in for sure.
DH only got an hour or so of sleep after working all night. I would think he'd be ready to drop.
Sounds like a good day for you! It's nice to see company go, isn't it? I mean-- I LOVE having company! I live to have people come over, so fun!!! But also nice when they go and you can sit back and relax.

Were you able to check out that link I posted a day or two ago? I haven't seen many, if any, short stories on there - they are all full length books for free. Sometimes I see one for free and a week later notice it listed for sale and no longer free so I think sometimes they do an introduction of a new book for free in order to get some reviews on it, and once it has a good rating, they remove it from the free list and start charging for it. So I've ended up with some really good books - not just the ones that are free because no one wants to buy them.
Yeah, I have the link open, actually and have found a couple of books that I think are worth reading! Mysteries!!! I love sci fy, and my next favorite are mysteries. So yeah, thank you for that link! For being such an Amazon junkie, I can't believe I haven't found that myself!

So we had a really good day today! Lots of outdoor time, because it was so nice out! I'm really worried about one of my Polish, I had to do another surgery on her bumblefoot-- second time around for her. :( Her foot is WORSE!! I'm going to go get penicillin tomorrow and start shooting her up. Otherwise, I just don't think she's going to make it. I soaked her in the Epsom salts and dug in and cleaned her out again and used the peroxide to fiz out a bunch of gunk, but I could tell that it's so deep and the swelling is so severe, that I just can't reach it all and I did so much cutting and digging, it was just too much. So I'll start the antibiotic and see if I can get it from that end. On the other hand, I removed the bandages off other birds and they are healed up now. I think I have another 3 birds to start surgeries on soon. I just didn't want to do all the birds at one time. I did 3, and I think I have another 3 to do. Sigh.

Thanks all for the birthday wishes, it has been a good day. I'm pooped out because my DH kept popping up out of bed to go to the bathroom & the meat alarm kept going off too on the smoker, so I didn't get a very good night's sleep. I'm hoping to get to bed earlier tonight than usual maybe & get a good night's sleep. I told my DH to stop drinking so much liquid before bed, darnit he wakes me up every single time he gets up & you know how when your sleep is interrupted you never really get good sleep. I would just get back to sleep & then he would pop up out of bed again. Since we had company he was going out the back door instead of parading through past the guest room to the bathroom, so he was sliding the patio door open & shut, ugh. I was so glad to see my son today though, kind of unusual for him to come & spend the whole day with me, but nice, just another testament to the nice girlfriend. I like her. She even cleaned out my herb garden for me & around my rock steps all on her own without even being asked, really surprised me. She also grew up on a farm & really is into the chickens & birds, so that is nice to have someone who understands my interest in them.

KarenS, I'm glad things are starting to get back to normal again for you. I saw your pics of your Alohas on that thread & you really have some pretty birds. I really like Ginger, she reminds me of some of my Swedish Flower Hens. I'm still waiting to see how the younger ones color out when they're older, they're just starting to change now but are at that awkward stage at the present. I just love those little birds though, of all of the breeds of chickens I have I think those are just my favorites. I don't know what kind of layers they will be, that remains to be seen, but if they're decent layers I don't think I would mind just having some for my general laying flock, they're just so friendly & really eye candy for the yard with all of their colors.

Oh no, that is too bad about the Polish - I hope this time is the charm and the penicillin fixes her right up. I wasn't too optimistic about the surgery I did two weeks ago as I was never able to dig out an actual bumble - just a few little bits and pieces. She limped for the first week after the surgery so I know the digging around I did in there really hurt her. But the last few days I haven't noticed any limping and today she was checking out the nest boxes for the first time (that I've seen) in quite awhile so it made me feel optimistic that perhaps she had stopped laying due to the staph infection and it is now healed enough that she is ready to lay again. I hope that is the case. I couldn't stick around to see if she actually sat in the nest and laid but I did get more eggs today than I've had in a long time. I have one more that I know of that needs to have surgery but hers is small and I'm going to wait until I'm sure the hot weather is done for the year so I know she won't be standing in the waterers with a newly opened wound on her foot.

oh wow, sounds like your bird is doing better then! That's great that she was checking out the nest box! My bird-- her foot is so swollen above the toes-- looks like balloons coming out of each webbing. Before there was only one swollen place the first time, and now there are 3 this time. Yikes! Her leg and foot were so HOT too! I felt terrible! I don't have any penicillin, so I have to go run and get that today after church. But that is high on my priority list for today. I just need to start hunting for a dosage per weight and figure out how much to give her. I don't expect it will be difficult to find that information, as this is a very common drug. I did check last night to see if penicillin is effective against staph and apparently it is a very good drug for it! So I'm glad about that.

Since you guys have posted about all the bumble foot I've been watching all the birds to see if any have swollen feet or anything. Glad to report I've found nothing. I sure hope it stays that way.
Karen I went to the Aloha thread as well and looked at yours and some of the other Alohas.I have to agree with Trish they remind me of the Flower hens and the Olandsk Dwarfs are like a miniature version with a few more spots.
I am thinking about buying yet another trio of the dwarfs. If I knew these would all survive and produce I wouldn't consider it because they are so pricey. But how does one know what will happen.
I'm picking up another dozen Swedish Flower hen eggs tomorrow evening. Hopefully I'll have a nice group of breeders after those hatch.
I hatched 3-4 sussex chicks yesterday and I've hatched several of the red star brahma mixed chicks. I have a couple of odd balls in there which I guess some other hen contributed. I have a marans hen that likes to lay with the red stars. So much for getting them vent sexed. I just had too much going on this week to take the time.
I need to get out today and get some smaller wire around the base of the peacock pen. If those eggs hatch she is sitting on those chicks will be gone. I'm kind of concerned about them being able to drink without drowning anyway. I can put a waterer in there but the big ones stand in a big pan to keep cool. If they got in there they would drown for sure. I hate to take the pan out as long as it is still hot out. My boy Pete is loosing at least a dozen or more tail feathers every day. It's kind of sad since he is so awesome beautiful with them.

Do keep us updated on the penicillin treatment - I'm glad to hear there is something that works against staph.
Try to find penicillin without procaine in it which is close to impossible. You might be able to safely dose with penicillin with procaine a couple times but it is really dangerous in birds and can cause paralysis and breathing problems to the point where they can't breath on their own. I have penicillin in the fridge and I have used it a few times only once in a bird but I am really nervous about the side effects. This is the major problem with using these drugs in chickens when it is off label because without an extensive veterinary manual it is hard to know what it actually treats and if there are side effects.

Hawkeye-I found some info on the novartis website about Denagard and their recommended dosing is about half what you were using. I thought you might be interested in this. Here is a link recommending 2 ml of denagard per liter of water so just shy of 8 ml to a gallon of water. http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Nov...w_v_Concentrate_for_Oral_Solution/-28468.html

Trying to med birds is so frustrating!!!

Oh, and there was a giant black snake trying to get into to my chick hoop house this morning!

I wacked it over the head several times with a grain scoop then ran to grab a rake but it was gone when I got back. Hope it doesn't come back.

That snake was probably having eggs for breakfast. They make me so mad. I have 6 million mice here and the stupid snakes come in and eat eggs. I usually have a shovel or a hoe nearby and it's off with their heads!
Josie my duck is still wheezing. I think she has something caught in her throat. I have no idea how I would find that out for sure until she dies. She is really loosing weight and the baytril hasn't helped any. Poor thing. I wish I had a laproscope and could go in and take whatever is in there out. Her mouth is very dry cause she chokes when she drinks. Makes me think she is just hanging on at this point.

Hawkeye, I'm sorry about your hen, I hope you can get an antibiotic that will work & get her well.

I was just pooped to the point of almost being sick last night, I went to bed with a headache, but I slept until almost 11 today & I feed better. I went out & was putting some straw in the dog house in the grow-out pen & saw that one of my little Swedish Flower Hen chicks had died in there. It looks like they all crowded into a corner & it got trampled. I don't know why those silly chickens are always doing that it seems like. So anyway I'm down one Swedish Flower Hen chick now, darn. I have brought all of the chicks out of my utility room outside now so there are no more chicks in the house thank goodness. I don't mind having some in there temporarily but I don't like them to stay too long. It's just a mess trying to keep crates clean. That was one reason why I wanted to take the top off the dog house out there was to check on the little Cream Legbar pullet & make sure she's still OK & so far she is, but is staying mostly in the dog house. She's smaller than most of the other chicks out there, so she probably gets picked on.

Well we're off to a BBQ at Sunflowerparrot's place this afternoon & it seems like a pretty nice day for it. I hope you all have a good day!
