Consolidated Kansas

Be sure to clean it out completely. Maggots are nasty and there are lots of flies out there right now that might have laid eggs in the wound.
I only have Orcheln's available to me for right now. I have some amoxicillin, can chickens have that? I was able to break down the dosage for kittens and dogs. I don't have Oxine, I will call Orcheln's, but I do remember a wash thing that the vet gave me for some kittens. I will look and see what that is too.

I almost have all the kids ready to go to town to get some supplies. I was thinking about maggots too but only because that's exactly what happened to the kittens that I consulted the vet about. I had to flush the wounds, and it was one of the most disgusting things I've ever had to do because they were infested with maggots. I don't think this chicken will fight me, she's pretty lazy right now. She moves around but she seems like she doesn't want to move around. I was going to find some syringes and some saline incase when I get her cleaned up it looks like it needs flushed too. The wound is on her belly but between her legs but maybe an inch or two further up. The feathers are matted down and I'm afraid that the wound is bigger than what I'm able to see. This whole area is going to need to be washed with lots of water to get it loosened up to see it better. Can these feathers be trimmed to keep the area cleaner? They're really fine right there. Staph seems like the most likely culprit for this type of wound. I'm not looking forward to this at all. It was such an ordeal with the kitten and they all made it but it was so much work and not fun work.

I am just not a cat person - period. I got rid of my cats today. (Now I will get those mouse traps!)

I also put the shock collar on Fern now that I don't feel sorry for her in her injured state anymore. (She is almost using her leg completely now - except for fast runs) She has been laying behind my steps in the front yard - totally not visible to the coop and animals in the back yard. Every time she went to lie down in her usual spot, I vibrated her collar - she got up and ran. Only had to do this 2 times.. she has been in front of (or inside the doorway of) the coop all day :) YAY...

I put up a little temporary chick pen in my coop today with some netting on top (and an old sheet over that) - the chicks are now out of my house.. next goal is to get the ducks out.. am working on the duck house/pen this week.

Chicken Danz-Yes the only problem is,,, my kids are attached to these. But I am going to try to add more hens and make a bachelor pad and rotate them with the hens and see how that works.

Mommahen- my roos are edging on 6months and some younger.

Karen, tell your DH I said Happy Birthday. The last few years we just don't do anything for each other's birthdays. I used to go way over board on gifts and my DH was never organized enough to do any thing ahead of time. Maybe a store bought cake the day after while I sat in the car waiting for him. I just finally decided if my birthday wasn't important to him I would quit making his important. We acknowledge, some times I bake him a cake or buy him dinner out but that is about it.
Mammahen you need to flush flush flush that wound. If it is stinking her recovery chances probably aren't good at all. Veterycin is something you can buy to wash it out that Orchlens carries. I would flush it really well with warn water and some pressure, then use whatever you have to disinfect it. Oxine is great but it is hard to find. I have to order mine. If you have some peroxide or Betadine around that would be excellent. I use a big syringe (you can buy those at orchlens) and use that to get some pressure for washing. or eve something like a turkey baster if you have one to gain a little pressure. She definitely needs to be on antibiotics but I don't believe amoxicillin is safe to use. If Josie would jump on here she would know for sure. Look back for posts with JosieChick and Hawkeye and it says what kind of antibiotic to buy for treatment of staph. I believe it was penicillin without some particular additive.
You may be able to just pluck out some of those feathers after you get her soaking and cleaned up some. Let the warm water loosen them up if you feel it is necessary to get them out.I certainly hope she doesn't have maggots in the wound. That is so sickening.
maidenwolf I understand that. I have a few spare roosters around here that aren't good for breeding but some of them are special and I can't kill them or sell them to someone else that will.
Also Josie if you do read this. Is the dimethox safe for ducks? As you know my ducks just go where they want and they drink out of the chicken's water. I really want to make sure I don't loose any more birds due to colds and stuff. I found a dead sparrow on the ground yesterday which tells me they are bringing in some disease like last year.

I just got some wazine 17... Just wondering how you do it? It gives the specifications of the dosage's for like 100 birds and i only have 8 so i'm not sure how i'll do that small of a dose... I have multiple waters thru out the yard but i only plan on treating the big main one in the coop. and of course the water evaporates out of it so when i have to refill it,(i only refill it every week or so, depending on the weather) how many times should i treat the water. What i mean is, when the water runs down do i treat it again? If so for how many times? I'm trying to figure out how to word this so you understand what i mean, sorry but im not to good at expressing what i mean.

Any suggestions on how i should go about this will be appreciated. the label says not to eat the eggs for 2 weeks after treatment? does that mean 2 weeks from the last time you treat them if you treat them multiple times? Or, once again, do i just treat the water once?... sorry bout all the q's... i sell the eggs (i get roughly 2 dozen a week) to 2 seperate ladies at church and, I read that someone still ate the eggs thru treatment but i don't want to endanger the ladies or anybody that eats them... awwww so many questions,

i don't know what to do?! I know im making this harder than what it should be but i just want to get it right the first time so i know how to do it in the future. I just read another post that said that the amount of wazine passed on to the eggs is so insignificant that it cannot adversely affect the consumer, and we eat mcdonalds and still survive sooo... it can't hurt right??? i just hate to waste those eggs.

I'll keep researching it...

I forgot to candle the eggs last night so i've got to do it tonight. I seen the hawk at the coop again to day but scared it off. my mom said maybe a scarecrow would keep it away, but i'm not for sure if we'll try it... OOOHHHH stressful times at the hooyer house....

Well I just got back from the local CO-OP where I loaded up the trunk of my car with feed. The one in town was cheaper than the one in Arkansas City or the Orschelyn's or TSC, so I opted to go there this time. It's all coming down to prices now that things are getting so high. We'll see how long this lasts me. I had checked to see about the bulk feed & they wanted me to buy 1000 pounds & I just don't have storage for that much feed nor can I afford to buy that much at once, so I'm kind of stuck with the bagged feeds. I hadn't gone to this CO-OP much before because in the past they seemed kind of rude & not very helpful, however today they did seem nicer, so maybe they have some new workers there. In fact when I got out of the car there was a guy there asking me what I needed & went to load it up before I even paid for it all, so that's an improvement. I'm just looking to save a few dollars & still be able to feed my birds what they need & that's getting harder & harder.

I looked online earlier today & you can buy parts for these windows I got for my coop, so if the guy doesn't come through for me with another window maybe I can find the parts & just fix the one I have. It won't be cheap, but the windows didn't cost much, so I guess it would be worth it to get it working so I could use it. I'm hoping he will just find a similar window though with working parts so I don't have to order parts because that will take time too & I just want to get this thing going & get it done. I know my DH isn't thrilled about the whole project & he will be glad when it's done & I will be glad to not hear him griping about it any more. I'm ready to move some birds too so they're not so crowded, but after the coop is done we still have to build runs for each breed.

Hawkeye, yeah the Isbars are the other breed I want to get next year, but as you say they're pretty pricey, so I was going to try to get eggs. There is someone on BYC that sells them & I was going to get some from her, but I don't want to incubate any more this year at all, I will wait till spring. I have enough on my plate for this year.

THROW THE EGGS out. The FDA regulates drugs and makes sure that food that goes to mcdonalds is not being treated with antibiotics, horomones or dewormers. You are responsible for disposing of eggs that carry chemicals from deworming. The FDA does studies to determine when trace levels of a drug are no longer present in food products for our safety as consumers. Mcdonalds might not be healthy but it is not laced with chemicals from medications the animals received while be grown for consumers. I have my flock on sulfa antibiotics right now and I am throwing out 2 dozen eggs a day.

I dose wazine one time and then repeat in 30 days. Pull their water tonight. In the morning replace their water with medicated water for a full 24 hours then replace it with fresh water. Keep them penned so they don't find other clean drinking water sources because they don't care for the taste of the water when it has medication in it.

If you are just doing chickens and they are all over 6 weeks of age use 2 fluid ounces or 60 mls of wazine to 2 gallons of water. OR 30 mls or 1 oz to 1 gallon of water. I use a syringe to draw up the wazine. You could also use a plastic measuring cup like for cough syrup, just don't reuse it for yourself after! Wash your hands well after handling any medication for your birds.

I got a very exciting call this afternoon. I'd been scheduled an appointment for a gastroparesis specialist at KU Med center for Dec 26th, but they called and said that they had a cancellation and have an appointment tomorrow afternoon! Hell yea, I want it! I so happy that I'll see someone that knows something about this disease and can start a plan of action - AND I don't have to wait till after christmas for it!

Well we got home about 1:30 last night. When we drove up I witnessed an owl INSIDE of the garage who just ripped the head off one of my salmon faverolle hens. This owl actually was inside the building with only a narrow door opening to get in. Now I know that is for sure what got my pheonix hen and chicks. I've been shutting every one up at night but there is no way to shut this group up any more. I was so upset and couldn't believe it flew inside the building to take a sleeping chicken. Worse yet it must have been without a sound because all three of the dogs were laying in the front yard and would have run if they'd heard anything. There's nothing else I can do if the stupid owls are brave enough to go in a building and grab a bird while it sleeps. I have "wild" chickens of no consequence that sleep in the barn and it is much more open. I have no idea why the owl didn't go there instead. I just have no clue what to do at this point. There is no way to shut this group up until I have my breeder facilities ready. It made me feel so angry!!!

Awww, Danz - I'm sorry to hear that! My cousin caught an owl in her bird netting just a few weeks ago trying to get at her birds. She let it go because it's against the law in Illinois to kill them - not sure about Kansas. I can understand how mad you are! I thought these birds were supposed to hate going into small areas, but apparently not.

Today is fall coop cleaning day. I have taken out all the roosts and the feeding shelf and a ramp to the upper roost and scrubbed and repainted them (had to do that early so the paint would dry.) I'm in the process of removing the shavings, but the girls ran me out to lay eggs. Next are the nest boxes and the inside scrub down. I need a rest. NOW.

Sharol
This is my goal for next weekend. I hope the weather holds out. Looks like there is a chance of rain all week long. I just want one nice day where I have enough energy to get the coop cleaned out and ready for winter! The top part of my coop got wet over the summer and is rotting away, so I need to get myself a few shingles and fix the small area before it gets worse. I'm also going to have to rearrange the area so my single female silkie will learn to sleep with the other birds since she won't have the other two to sleep with.

Tweety - so sorry you're feeling worse, AND can hear two sets of crowing. I looked at your pictures and the one with the gold leakage is a pretty obvious roo, but the other not so much. Still, silkies can surprise you. With my two, I had a blue and a splash and I had suspected the blue was a roo so when I heard the first crow I went running out there to look at him. He looked back at me innocently and while we were looking at each other, there was a crow from the other side of the yard. That was when Mildred became Milton. I had been so busy waiting for JB to crow, feeling confident "Mildred" was a girl, that her boyishness snuck up on me.
Yeah, I was really upset to hear them both going at it. I walked right up to them and one went then the other. Like they were holding a contest. I just hope I can get rid of them soon. If no-one bites on selling them for $10 each, i might have to offer them for free. My other chicken friend has someone that buys her silkie roos for food, but unless I don't have to go that route, I'd rather not. I have nothing against people eating them, just would rather them be pets.

I'm so sorry tweetysvoice, that's sad. Is it the barium that made you so sick? Is that a typical side effect? I don't have experience with that. I do get nauseous way too easily though. Call and ask for Phenergan, it's stronger than the Zofran and may just knock you out. At least if you're sleeping you're not throwing up. If they can't give you that, you can try benedryl if it has that sleepy effect on you, it won't work if it doesn't. Unisom works too and the midwives recommend it for morning sickness and works the same way, I'm pretty sure it has the same active ingredient as Benedryl. Zofran is my favorite for nausea because it's subtle and I can continue my day, but if it doesn't kick it I do Phenergan but I have to call my husband and at least let him know because I will sleep through anything. Did they give you 4mg or 8mg Zofran? 4mg is never enough for me so they give me 8mg, maybe they just gave you the smaller tabs. I hope that you feel better soon.

I had to look, it's the 4mg that they gave me. I didn't even know it came in 8mg. I put another call into the doc to see if he'll let me go ahead and take two of them. I really don't want to go back into the ER just to get hydrated. Since I work there, it's so embarrising to go in and have my co-workers see me at my worst. I agree that sleep is the best thing for nausea! I did a lot of that today. Had to make myself wake up so I'd sleep tonight.

also ,, found out that 2 of my supposed hens are absolutely roos,,, found them crowing this morning...
hit.gif
That leaves me with 8 roos and 9 hens........

Wow.. must be something in the air. I found out that two of my silkies are roos today as well

tweety, I sure hope you feel better soon & they figure out how to help you.
Me too, thanks! :)

Thanks Josie for putting the Wazine dosage on again, it saved me from having to look it up, now all I have to do is figure out where I put mine. I really need to get my chicken meds organized!
