THROW THE EGGS out. The FDA regulates drugs and makes sure that food that goes to mcdonalds is not being treated with antibiotics, horomones or dewormers. You are responsible for disposing of eggs that carry chemicals from deworming. The FDA does studies to determine when trace levels of a drug are no longer present in food products for our safety as consumers. Mcdonalds might not be healthy but it is not laced with chemicals from medications the animals received while be grown for consumers. I have my flock on sulfa antibiotics right now and I am throwing out 2 dozen eggs a day.

I dose wazine one time and then repeat in 30 days. Pull their water tonight. In the morning replace their water with medicated water for a full 24 hours then replace it with fresh water. Keep them penned so they don't find other clean drinking water sources because they don't care for the taste of the water when it has medication in it.

If you are just doing chickens and they are all over 6 weeks of age use 2 fluid ounces or 60 mls of wazine to 2 gallons of water. OR 30 mls or 1 oz to 1 gallon of water. I use a syringe to draw up the wazine. You could also use a plastic measuring cup like for cough syrup, just don't reuse it for yourself after! Wash your hands well after handling any medication for your birds.
K, thanks A TON, for the input, thats a big load off the shoalders. i found sooo much varying info that i just didnt know who to believe... and i couldnt understand half of it... and the thing about mcdonalds was just a joke, hehe, i read that from another thread... but thanks again for the help, i'll do it tonight.

I got a very exciting call this afternoon. I'd been scheduled an appointment for a gastroparesis specialist at KU Med center for Dec 26th, but they called and said that they had a cancellation and have an appointment tomorrow afternoon! Hell yea, I want it! I so happy that I'll see someone that knows something about this disease and can start a plan of action - AND I don't have to wait till after christmas for it!

Danz- I don't know if you can use the sulfa liquid with ducks. I will check with DH on that one.

I had a $1.99 roll of bias tape I bought from a salvage store. There must have been at least 75-100 yards on that roll. I just went out and wove it over and across any pen that was open so it would deter the night predators. That means I just need to start shutting the garage door as well. It was only open maybe 18 inches but the dumb owl was there regardless. Actually I feel better now knowing exactly what it was that got my other hen. I know what to look for and also understand why the dogs didn't respond.
It's illegal to kill raptors in any State. Personally I think it is stupid when they become so plentiful and so hungry that they start attacking live stock as opposed to wild game. They do serve a purpose, but the mice and such are so plentiful this year I can't imagine them not finding food other than our poor chickens to eat. They are just easy targets when they are roosting.
I guess I can always hope the owls and the hawks eat these sick migratory birds and die them selves.
Tweety congrats on getting the appointment. I hope it works out well for you. And I hope you get a good doctor.

Lizzy and anyone interested - Ideal hatchery sent out an email today saying they have goslings available to ship. I am having trouble getting things to post. Send me a PM if you want more info from the email, or just call Ideal. They don't have their site updated.

Owls - I have heard that cd's and other reflective things hung where they will move and reflect any available light, will help deter owls. Their eyes are so adapted to the dark, the flashes of light are a problem for them. They have no problem going into small spaces. They have gone into my barn and I keep a light on in there all night, so,??? Knowing what you are dealing with helps you plan a defense.

We have a severe thunderstorm warning and I can't get out to get the meds. It was hailing and I grabbed kids and ran them in and went right back out to make sure the chicks were safe. They were in their house and they're fine. I'm shutting down computers, gonna feed everyone dinner and when the weather breaks I will bring the chicken in and at least tend to the wound.

Danz, I am sure the chicks are from quality stock if you say they are:) I have no concerns. I had never heard of toes curling like that, but am sure it wasn't something you or Eileen knew about the bird having. Not upset about it at all :) Just was confused as to what to do about it. Josie said she thought it looked rooish.... I don't know. Its comb is a bit pinker than the bigger one, but I am not giving up hope. All of these chicks are so sweet and seem to enjoy being handled. I love their light colored eyes. I can't wait to see how they change. I am sure they will all be eye candy :)

Andy wants to help me check it's toes to see if they are doing better. I am guessing they will need to be splinted for a while?

I am so sorry about that owl! We had one here as well. Scary looking things! Got caught in my netting. I knocked it out with a broom. I added two layers of netting. From what you said about the bias tape, should I add something more visible across the top? I have been locking the birds up at night since then, but am actually more scared to let my little dogs out! They aren't in a covered run..... Are smaller than the chickens too!

Tweety, so glad you got that appt!!! It is sad how long it takes to see a specialist..... But I will keep my fingers crossed for you that it works out quickly to help you resume normal life!

Medawinks sent you a PM. I talked to Eileen and I think we know what the problem was. I discovered today one of my pheasant chicks has curled toes on one foot. I've had that happen in the past when they had trouble hatching for some reason. Normally it's because I haven't kept the humidity up high enough during hatching. I honestly didn't even know you could fix them. The pheasant seems to get along fine with her curled toes.
I found two more cases of bumble foot today. Funny how all along there's been none and now I find some. I wonder if it is because due to the drought the chickens are foraging out further and further where they can get into more stickers and stuff. I have some locust trees a long a fence line where they were hanging out. I wonder if a couple of them might have gotten poked out there.
I just wasn't feeling well enough myself to mess with it today. Maybe tomorrow I'll spend some time operating.

mommahen10, isn't that the way it goes? We need the rain, but hail? When you need meds for your bird. So sorry you're having a hard time. Good luck with her, it's so stressful caring for an injured bird.

Tweety, I'm so glad you get to go to the specialist tomorrow!!!!! Wow, what a relief. It's just the pits to struggle with illness and not know what to do about it.

Oh and I forgot. The reason for the bias tape was that I had it here and it was cheap. It isn't the folded kind so it's equivalent to about a 1 /14 wide strip of cloth. I just strung it back and forth about a foot apart. The purpose I am told is that a hawk or an owl spreads their wings to land or catch their prey. When they try to come down to ropes or cloth or what have you, they can't get through and if they try, they get tangled in it. The lady I got my original show bantam polish from had her entire yard covered in strips of something. She had akbash, but said she had lost many birds to hawks and owls. But since putting up the strips she hadn't lost any birds at all. The few uncovered areas I have are just temporary housing so I don't want to put up expensive netting I can use on the permanent pens. I gave the dogs a long hard speech today about them earning their keep and how I expected them to be out patrolling, not laying around waiting to hear something. I am sure they all understood what I said.
If I could read their minds they were probably thinking. "If I lick you a few more times and force my head under your hand I know you'll want to pet me. And when is dinner by the way? Are we having the same old dog food again or do you have some special treats for us?
