I accidentally bought pellet food and my chickens aren't eating it. Any suggestions on what i can do? We tried to crumble it up in my food processor but that didn't work maybe i had the wrong blade or something.

Congrats, HEChicken!!!! Well deserved!

ChicknBaron, hope all goes well with those that are pipping. I agree with mommahen10, 2 full days is the outside limit from pip to hatch so it seems they are having difficulty. It is so hard to tell when to help and when to leave well enough alone. Don't beat yourself up because we all have difficulties and those times when we think "If only I had helped sooner." or "If I had just let that chick do it's own thing." There are good outcomes and not so good ones and it's all a part of the learning curve.

Fingers crossed for you.

Danz, oh my stars! You must be sore. You are so going to have to slow down a bit. I understand how you feel about decorating. I used to be a decorating queen too. I love looking at all the lights around the holidays and really enjoy them.

Trish, whenever will be great. I'm in no danger of starting that project today. I woke up feeling a little funky and hope to heaven I'm not coming down with something. I don't have time for that nonsense! Hope you have a good busy day!

I just won some German New Hamp hatching eggs on ebay! They will be great for helping increase the size of the Alohas and also just a great all around breed. Late spring or early summer next year, I should have some chicks to sell. Woot! Now if I could only get my hands on some of those Buff Sussex!

Try KSRBA.com or Bergene Rabitry they both have links to people selling the tiny pet type rabbits.

Maybe try putting it in a plastic bag and hitting it with a hammer? Or you could just moisten a little of it so they figure out it is food.

Oh my stars! I wish I had known! I was bidding against you!!!! Seriously!!! If it weren't for me you could have gotten them at the starting price!!!! I owe you! How about if you have too many roos hatch and choose which ones you want to keep I can buy a roo from you? I really only wanted one so I could breed my own redstars! From Springdale, AR right? I feel awful. I had never seen any go that cheap before. Maybe that could make up the extra $6 I cost you! Talk about crummy friends.
I have some awesome Halloween decorations I haven't even used yet. I had a 35 foot long porch that curved around the front of my old victorian house and another porch on the side of the house that was about 16 feet long. They had railings so they were wonderful to decorate. I guess that and my landscaping are the two things I miss the most about living in town.
DH suggested I talk to the Chinese restaurant owners that buy my eggs and ask to put my Halloween house display in their front window. I thought it was such an awesome idea but I don't have the nerve to ask. I think it might be good for their business to draw attention but it comes with some responsibility too. It takes a little electricity to run it and they would have to be sure that children didn't go in the window display and mess with it. I have a couple of pieces that have foggers and they have to have distilled water added now and then too. When I lived in town I had a big dining room and would set it up on my dining room table with a few extra leaves put in. We used the door to the dining room to enter the house. So when kids came to trick or treat they could look at it. Even there I had to watch the kids to make sure they didn't pick up stuff from it. I miss having the room to do things like that even if I would be the only one to see them.

I wandered outside and I've misplaced; or the dog has taken two of my mousetraps. I swear I was missing one yesterday and today there is a second one gone. I am confused because I was sure I put them where Cloud couldn't get them. Maybe I am just totally loosing my mind and have no idea where I stuck them.
Well I've done it. I have both peachicks and the chicken loose in the house. I am trying to get the peachicks to get used to each other little by little. They were scared of each other. I scrubbed down the wall behind my diamond dove cage and am letting them all clean up all the feed the doves threw on the floor. I am thinking of making a quick cover for the dove pen to keep some of that seed and dust inside the cage. I really think they are pretty birds but I need to sell a bunch of them. I'm not even sure I want to keep any since I have to keep them indoors. If I had an aviary that was closed off from the rest of the house they would be awesome. They are tiny and make very sweet sounds but I keep saying I am getting birds out of the house.

I know this isn't nice, but I seriously LOL'd at this!

No way you would have ever known, Danz! How crazy was that?

Karen- Such a cute story, your kids will have that little guy tamed up in no time! My seramas are very, very loud. It is amazing. I have one that does an egg song I can hear from the house and the coop is a good couple hundred feet from the house with a privacy fence in between!
Okay, so I would be remiss if I didn't report that I got two new Seramas yesterday. One from Danz, the other from Josie Chick. Both said the birds needed to get more accustomed to people and I'm happy to say the kids have that well in hand. They quickly named the cockerel Bertram and the hen Lucy. Cute!

DS just got home and came in from gathering eggs and was so thrilled that the new little hen is following him around and allowing herself to be picked up already! That's one smart little hen! He latched onto her last night and made friends with her, holding her quietly and feeding her by hand. She's a quick study and figured out he's going to be a good one to know.

The little roo isn't quite that easy to win over, as you would expect. Last night, he was sitting docilely in DD's lap in the craft room, faking sleep, when suddenly he took flight! DS went to catch him, with the little hen still tucked under his other arm,but when he reached for the roo, that roo let out a squawk that stunned everyone. DS quickly recovered and caught him, just like that! I'd have been flapping all over the room till today, trying to catch that bird, but not DS! Once DS had returned little roo to DD, everyone cracked up at how loud such a little chicken could be. I had forewarned them but there just isn't anything like experience. Little roo is still squawking at them today, but they'll convince him they're friends, I'm sure. The kids are just so thrilled with the newest chicken family members. Even DH smiled when he walked into the craft room to find the kids loving on the new birds yesterday.
Yeah, i'm pretty sure it's because they were perceived as the biggest threat to the flock dynamics since they didn't stand down to the other birds. DH was nervous about all the chasing, but I assured him that it was all part of them determining their positions within the flock. The Javas are probably just happy that they aren't the only ones getting picked on now. LOL As soon as I threw down some scratch, everyone forgot about who was chasing who and they all started eating. That's when we got the best pics.

We just went out, now that It's dark, and put everyone into the coop for bed. All new birds had paired up and were sleeping in very odd places. The EEs were on-top of the water barrel, the Orps were on-top of the coop and the silkie was on-top of the tree stump. LOL. They didn't fight us picking them up and putting them onto the roost, so I think all's going to be good for the night. I'll check on them again here in 1/2 an hour. That's me - I'll be checking on them for a while.. lol
I am sure they will all figure it out. As long as there is no blood shed you should be fine. The new girls will learn where they are supposed to go in a few nights time.
Thanks! :) I"m so very happy with them. Josie raises beautiful birds! The EE's almost look like they have hawk heads, which is so cool!
I was pretty happy with the EEs from Ideal. I have one from another hatchery too that also has the hawk head look, they are cool birds.
ok my order from ideal poultry shipped today, maybe I will get them tomorrow? Has anyone ordered from them? How long did it take you to recieve?
I got my Ideal shipment on a Wednesday AM and they shipped on a Monday.
Geez - Getting chilly outside already. Just popped my head into the coop and everyone is fast asleep. The two silkies are already huddled together - yay! Body heat! The other birds are separated - older birds to the far left and new birds to the far right. haha. That's ok. I think we'll be alright :)
Sleep well all! nite nite
Oh, so glad the silkies are friends!
Cherwill, not sure what happened with my multi but I will see if I can find the free chicken ad on craigslist for you.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
I am so far behind on posts I can't possibly catch up. Maidenwolf I have ordered from Ideal two times and it took 2 days both times.
Josie you've moved so many birds I wouldn't think you'd have much left. BTW I am going to buy another Sebbie hen from a friend of mine. She is 2 years old. Do you think she will get along with my group? She did have a couple blue saddle backs that were smooth breasted, but they were male. I didn't know if you'd be interested or not. Her husband has been fighting cancer all over his body for years and he has some very severe types right now and has to make several out of state trips for special treatments, so she is reducing her animals. She is selling her birds too cheap so if I can help her I certainly will. I know you are downsizing but I know you wanted a smooth breasted as well.
Goose thief!!!!! hehehehehehe.....I am sure she will get along fine, you might keep her next to them for a few days before you just stick her in the pen so she doesn't get picked on but geese are pretty amiable creatures. I still have a lot of birds to thin out. I am keeping my orpingtons, my two big turkeys, ameraucanas, brahmas, bantam cochin flocks, call ducks and sebbies. I am thinning out my pullets because I haven't been selling eggs so I figure we will just eat the orp eggs when I am not hatching. I don't need 900 pullets running around.
I've got to say Josie and Hawkeye, that little silkie looks awesome. Her markings are so perfect. I thought she as adorable before but she is just gorgeous all cleaned and fluffed.
Isn't she a doll? I love that girl. She is a very pretty silkie and looking much better clean!
That reminds me. I cannot believe how totally soft the English Orps are. They are so much more fluffy that the American breed. I totally love them. I want to breed some of those English traits into my American girls.
I need to check my incubator. I believe I have some more eggs due to come out in the next day or two. I also should be getting some eggs in the mail today with luck. Sure hope they arrive in good shape. I spent a chunk of $$ on them. I hate having to have eggs shipped to get what I want.
I got my feed and managed to get it all shoveled into the barrels late yesterday, but let me tell you it was not a pleasant thing. My back and legs were singing. I really need to get out and do some fencing but I just don't know if I can handle it right now.
In past years I decorated outside for every holiday. Lots of lights and stuff. Of course I never had dogs that would steal things and I had porches to decorate, and of course lots of traffic. I have a fortune in decorations and it seems such a waste not to use them. I love putting on a light show of sorts for people. Dennis says no one will see it so why go to the trouble but I still love to decorate. I have some Halloween decorations I'd love to display. I am just so undecided what to do. I guess I could sell all this stuff but what fun would that be?

They will eat it when they get hungry. I find mine don't sit and gobble food when they have pellets so you may not see them at the feeder as much as with the crumbles.
Maybe try putting it in a plastic bag and hitting it with a hammer? Or you could just moisten a little of it so they figure out it is food.

Trish-Glad to hear you got Jasmine straightened out with the guineas!

Well, lots to get done today so I best get my butt moving! I am not sure what to do with miss Lucie. I am so torn. She is very antsy inside and she isn't bad she just seems out of sorts. I have been letting her out in the evening and she is just such a good worker, I don't know what to do. I can't leave her outside all the time here because if a bird gets loose it will be sorry but she is such a good coyote dog that I feel like I am taking away who she is when I drag her inside and make her sleep on a dog bed. Sigh.

Must get outside and get my chores done. Still have more netting to hang today, takes forever by yourself.

Man I'm pooped tonight now, I had to chase a little welsummer pullet around & around through the woods tonight. Today was her first day to be out to free-range since being let out of the grow-out pen.

Well I think Jasmine has learned her lesson with bothering the guineas.

Tomorrow morning we have to take the cat to the Vet & my DH's car in for service. He has been having some issues with overheating, so he's going to have that looked at & the oil changed. We'll leave his car at the shop & take mine to take the cat in to get looked at. She has been having an issue with some skin problems & now today doesn't seem to feel well at all, so I don't know what is going on with her now.
Wow, what a chase with the birds! Glad that Jasmine is being a good girl with the birds now, great news! I hope your cat will be okay, that doesn't sound too good. And then the car on top of it all. Sheesh, when you get a break?

This is the BLRW i rescued from the bator... He's looking good now... It looks like the australorp and welsummer might hatch tonight--i'm hoping anyways-- because they've both been pipped for over 24 hours... i've seen recent movement in both tho so i know there still alive and kickin... I just hope i didn't saran wrap any of them when i took out the BLRW...

awwwww, so adorable!!!

I know you were!!! I felt bad yesterday, I kept thinking Loralee thinks I am pawning this awful bird off on her and she isn't even sure what she is going to do with her!!! I kept hoping you would bring her home and wash her up because she is a show girl! She would strut around my pen here and I would look at her and think she needs to go somewhere that has the time for her because that girl could go places!
HA! Well, I'm feeling pretty good now! hehehe! It will be fun to see what happens in E. Nationals! Sounds like you are really cutting down on your birds. That will be really nice when it's winter and less to do out there.
wink.png

Tweety, Congrats on your new birds. What fun! They are all just beautiful. I'm glad they're settling in okay.

Hawkeye, I just showed your pics to the kids. They went crazy for that bit of fluffy cuteness. Even DH had to smile. The poor man is beginning to halfway like chickens against his will!

Trish, Thanks in advance for taking a pic of the roost for me!

Oh! The mallards are still here but they've added another female, so there are four of them today. They won't go in the coop at night with the others but they are helping themselves to the feeder with the others and don't mind us watching them or getting close while they eat. That's pretty cool! Duck math and it's not even my fault!
OH how funny!! I am having a silkie shipped to me from FL next week and I told my DH last night and I think he's given up. Just kind of shrugged his shoulders! LOL But on the other hand, he sneaks in the pen and will hold the silkies and carry them around when he's outside. They are a lot like lap dogs. So neat that you have another mallard! I hope they do okay on the pond. If they will just stay out in the middle of it at night, they should be okay. The coyotes are setting up a howl every night at my place. Time to make a dent in their numbers. My neighbors dog was over here this morning when I opened the front door to let out my little indoors doggies and I swear, if I'd had my..... (rhymes with fun) handy, he'd have been a dead dog. Argh!

Geez - Getting chilly outside already. Just popped my head into the coop and everyone is fast asleep. The two silkies are already huddled together - yay! Body heat! thanks ,,, I am up bright and early in hopes that I will recieve a call from the post office
fl.gif
Had the brooder light running all night to keep it warm,, COME ON CHICKIES!!!!!
D.gif
Maybe tomorrow? I'm assuming they didn't come in today? I've had birds shipped to me 3 times now and they all arrive at the airport the next day. Then they spend the day in sorting, and finally get to the post office the next day. So I call the airport sorting office and ask if they have live birds in there and have been able to get them the very next day. Pretty nice, but I'm not too far to be able to do that. ;)

i have 4 in the incubator unhatched, 2 are pipped, the 2 that are, will have been pipped for 2 full days after school today... that being said, if i don't see any progress from now to when i get home i think i'm gonna try and help them since the other two are pipped yet... From the wellie egg i haven't seen pretty much any thing from it or heard it but the reason i think they are shrink wrapped is because the aussie has made a Big pip and looked like it was trying to zip but is stuck sooo... it looks like i might be helping them out later in the afternoon... wish me luck
Good luck! I hope they are okay, and even if they aren't-- don't beat yourself up for it. These things can just happen.

Thanks! Oh wow, you need to take it as easy as you can. Sounds like you are busy all the time! I love decorating too! I just do my front porch in the pumpkins. I have a couple of the pre-carved ones that light up and then we do real ones, too. :)

oh my gosh, that is so funny about the both of you bidding on those eggs! Oops! I hope your dogs didn't drag the traps out into the field never to be seen again. :( Can you chain them to a post or something?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Busy morning for me already. Late start for school, then dropped the dogs off at the groomers this morning. Then I headed out to Andover to pick up a dog kennel so I can transport birds to the show. I may not need another one, we'll see.. I have another one already. I love CraigsList, whatever did we do before that was around???
