Danz, I hope I'm not being a pain in the you know what but I didn't understand this part. "I consider 50% on shipped age acceptable." What's shipped age? I can't believe all the things you get done, you rock! A few weeks ago I bought a metal feed pan, thinking it was the exact same size and shape as those expensive waterer heaters and we could surely come up with something. It wasn't 2 days later I read about the cookie tin ones and they seem so much more practical because they would seal nicely too. This should be a reasonably simple project. I like that.

I'm cracking up at the thought of letting the kids loose with the decorating. Mine do the decorating too and it's usually pretty tacky looking and I couldn't care less, they have fun and they're learning and it's all good.

That was a typo! I am so good at letting my fingers run without my mind in tact! Instead of 50% on shipped age I meant 50% on shipped eggs. Maybe it is my age that makes me do things like that!
I feel like I accomplish nothing. And what I do just keeps me from getting the normal stuff like cleaning the house done. There was a time when I worked from sun up to bed time non stop. I couldn't sit still.

That was before my body decided to fall apart and before the internet.
I've always loved decorating and over decorating everything. I still love it I just think about it now instead of getting it done!

I went out to work some more and decided to get busy picking stuff from the garden. I picked two huge buckets of peppers and still have half of them to go yet. That is just picking the bigger stuff. I don't think I should have to buy any peppers of any kind all winter. Or maybe all of the next year. My chickens do love them though. I picked a few cucumbers and gave the chickens a treat while I was at it.
I actually went out to get a butternut squash and never got that far. I found a recipe for a butternut Cream pie and just have to try it. Bending over to pick about did my back in. I got the vent covers on the chicken houses, closed some windows and some wood doors. I was so cold I just figured the chickens would appreciate it. So in all that I never got started on hanging fence again.

Oh also I adopted 3 pullets 5 1/2 months old. A black australorp, welsummer and a buff brahma. They were given to a neighbor and she let me take my pick for all the work I have helped her do this summer. The owner is a lady in town who was moving next month and needed to get rid of all her animals she still has roosters and 2 pigs to find homes for, they were not kept in good conditions but look good and will clean up nicely. I have them in a makeshift ICU in my barn, I gave them vitamins and food and water and they have settled in nicely. I think I will keep them there for a week to monitor for sickness. What a busy day for me.

Well I have an interview tomorrow morning for a grooming position at a pet resort in Overland Park. I am kind of nervous, I haven't had an interview for over 5 years! And our washing machine is on the fritz so if anyone has an recommendations for front loader, stackable washers let me know!

Wishing you the best of luck! With your outstanding personality, you are going to nail the interview!!

Josie, I'm so happy with Raine, the silkie - She's so smart. It only took one night of me showing her the coop and where to sleep at night, she's gone in there every night since! She's even taught my current silkie to go up there. Mine is following her around everywhere now. It's so cute!!! All of the girls are doing so good. Both the GLOrps went into the night coop on their own as well. Still having to put the EEs and Javas in, but today was a good day :)

I figured it must be something with the marans... I ordered two of those specifically because i really wanted a hen for dark eggs, but yes they were shipped, and today i poked around inside side and found nothing but a yoke in both :( oh well, glad to hear that that is normal for marans because i was wandering... By the way the, I'm pretty sure the chick that hatched out of the "australorp" egg looks nothing like an australorp chick should... i've looked it up time and again of what an australorp chick looks like and it doesn't look ANYTHING like it should... It is overall brown, no black at all, no yellowish feathers on the front, like the ones i've seen, and it just is brownish-reddish kindof like the wellie... hmmm, i'm wondering if maybe there was a mixup at the factory, and they got them labeled wrong or if they accidently mis-bred one of the hens with the wrong rooster??? who knows, now that i think of it, i think i ordered from strombergs maybe??? Who do you recomend for ordering shipped eggs OR live chicks??? oh, and, Any ideas on my australorp imposter confusion...

Wow, I haven't had a chance to get on here today it's been a busy day & there were so many posts it took me awhile to catch up! There is no way I can respond to everyone, so I won't try.

We had to go to Lowe's this afternoon to pick up my roofing I ordered & the special nails for it, some other screws to put up siding, & some OSB for the roof. It was just a nasty, windy, cold day today. After we got back & my DH went to work I went out & cut off about 100 cable ties & pulled the chicken wire & tarp off the top of the grow-out pen. I was going to put the shelter I had been working on in there, but it turned out there was no way to get it in there. HEChicken will know what I mean when I say the gate to that pen is so narrow you can't get much of anything through it. Sunflowerparrot & R came over to help me, but we couldn't figure any way to get that shelter in that pen, so we ended up putting my extra igloo dog house in there & the other little dog house I did have in there. I never would have gotten that igloo dog house in there if it hadn't been for Sunflowerparrot. She was standing up on the other shelter box & lifting the igloo over the side of the coop, which is 6 foot tall. I was on the inside of the pen & we managed to get it over the top & into the pen without killing anyone. Then she helped me get the fencing I had hooked over the top of the pen. That was some real fun, at one point I had the fence sitting on the top of my head while I tried to hook it onto the top of the pen with cable ties. After she left I got the chicken wire & tarp pulled back over & hooked back onto the pen. Then I got my big tarp out of the garage & hooked it onto the back of that pen & halfway over the back of the turkey pen next to that one. Then I got one more tarp out & put it on the side of the pen, so my imported birds should be OK now for the cold snap. I was the most worried about them since they're more fragile & have been sick. At least they have shelter in there & a break from the wind. I got straw put in the dog houses in there for them to snuggle in & then had to hurry & feed everyone before it got too dark. I was feeding the dogs just after dark & finally got to come in & thaw out. I have to get a couple more tarps tomorrow & some plastic so I can do some more pens & the peacock/ guinea hoop coop yet. I'm also going to move all the rabbits into the cages in the garage tomorrow. I don't want to leave them out in the cold this weekend, I'm afraid they will get sick. That's all I need now is to have sick rabbits. Gosh I hate to have this cold snap come, I know it's time for cooler weather, but I'm not ready for 30s & 40s yet, BRRRR.

If you can wait until next spring both Danz and I should have lavender orp babies or eggs. Otherwise my recommendations would be to try to find eggs that are closer to us or from the west coast. I have had bad luck with eggs from the east coast. Takes longer for them to get here too. I would highly, highly recommend buying from a fellow BYC member. You could post a want to buy ad in the hatching eggs section. I personally do not like ebay and rarely shop there. I have had too many terrible experiences with poorly packaged eggs, people using pictures of birds that are not even their own stock etc. One time I had a guy ship me eggs in stale movie theater popcorn! Yuck.
Josie, I've been seriously considering buying hatching eggs. I want lavender Orpingtons sooooo bad. I was even thinking about driving to pick them up because I'm scared of what will happen during shipment. I love your ideas for keeping them busy when they're cooped up. I'm going to work on that. Good luck with your interview tomorrow. I'm sure you'll do great.

Thanks Tweety! I am so glad the girls are doing well for you. Glad the silkies are friends, isn't it funny how they pair up with their "own." I am always intrigued by that behavior. I bet the younger girls just don't have the hang of going into a coop yet.

I would highly recommend hatching eggs from a BYC member. You can post a want to buy ad in the hatching eggs section. There are some fabulous people on here who are very honest and take good care of their birds. Maran eggs can be tough to hatch from what I have heard. I have ordered live chicks from Meyers and was very happy with them. I have also ordered from Ideal and was a bit less impressed. Mostly because they didn't put bio filters in the box so the holes were just open to the air and I also got a lot of boys that were supposed to be girls in my batch. Danz can probably give you some good recommendations too as she has good experience with certain hatcheries and knows a lot of breeders around the state as well.

Bummer, it was some people that were looking for free chickens to have a flock at their farm. They didn't care if they weren't laying well anymore and someone was wondering about re homing older hens when they stopped laying due to limited space. Wonder what the deal is with flagging?
Not sure what was on this link, but it's already been flagged for removal.
This sounds like a fun project! I am not looking forward to this chilly weather. I was freezing today.
