Consolidated Kansas

Danz, sorry for your loss & for the mystery of why it happened. Those type mysteries seem to be hard to get off of the mind and causes us to second guess our self.

Sunlight kills many germs, do you have a way to get some sunshine in that area? Central Heat and A/C are wonderful but they do have a way of keeping the same air going around and around, even if the furnace has a fresh air intake. We kept getting something, finally went to the Dr, he said open up your windows and get some new fresh air and keep an eye on the humidity, central heat and A/C both take humidity out of the air inside. I open up our home and let the fresh air in....then I will need to dust.

Medawinks that face painting looks creative and fun!

One of my young turkeys was displaying yesterday, cutest little mini tom. My son got some video of it on his phone. I think the best part of this experience with turkeys is how my son and DH love watching the turkeys and laughing at them. They were afraid we'd have all hens. I assured them with my luck with rooster-pullet ratio we'd probably have all jakes!

We had all three of our kids home this weekend, love it when our family nest is full, and I'm going to have an adjustment next year with my empty nest. I have many things I want to do.

Wild pigs are several places in our area. We have some trail cam pictures of them near the Kansas/Colorado/Oklahoma marker. ( where people can stand in 3 states at once) There are many tracks in the area and they root around leaving their mark of distruction. They reproduce rapidly! The wildlife department brings in helicopters and shot at them, I think it's Colorado that brings the helicopters. It's hard for me to keep up, we have 3 states here and 3 different wildlife management rules/laws and ideas.

Hey Kansas Prairie, where are you seeing wild hog? My son is the wildlife biologist for that area. He is up in Garden City!

Danz so sorry about the pullet. I lost a LF silver spangled hamburg pullet yesterday, just dead. Don't know why.

Ivy thinks for sure she will be there Friday. She said she wants to see you again.
Awesome! I really miss her. She was so much help to me when my Mom passed. I will forever be grateful. I can't wait! How is Mike doing?

Do you have actual miniatures or is it just a young Tom. I have midget whites and have an overabundance of boys. For eating that is great but for breeding it is sad! I just hope my girls are good producers.
I rarely open the house. I have so many allergies I end up sick if I open windows much. I am not sure how I can spend so much time outdoors and do so-so but when I leave a window open I get sick. Maybe it is more leaving them open at night. I do much better since I moved to the country though.

Danz, so sorry about your Olandsk. Did you hear back from the guy to confirm the other one is an Olandsk and not a SFH?
Nope haven't heard back from him yet. I guess I need to send him another message. He is a well known quality breeder. But even so I think mistakes can be made. I sure hope she is just big for her size but I doubt it!

Danz- yea it is heavy and it isnt even done yet. I plan on putting some wheels on it soon. It is 10' long and 4' wide. Plenty of room I think. The coop area is 3' x 4'. This is just an outside enclosure for the chicks on nice days and to get used to the flock. and maybe home to a few broilers next spring. I plan to hatch and sell or trade next spring so it will be good for the new hatch too. I need to plan a grow out pen.. hhmmm I go have extra materials. LOL I am going to keep my DH busy for weeks lol
Today is supposed to be in the upper 70's, would today be an ok day to bring the chicks out? Maybe for a couple hours? And should I plug up a light in the tractor for them?

We have lots of wind where I live with not much for windbreaks, so when I bought the hoop coop 2 years ago, I realized it would be too heavy to move by hand. While I was using it both last year and the fall I got it, I used our lawn mower to move it. It has a chain attached to the front supports, and when the mower starts to move the upper end of it comes off the ground a little so it doesn't drag all the lawn with it. It was quite expensive, and probably not a good purchase financially, but it is very sturdy and I don't worry about predators with it at all.

That said, if you really want to hand move it, I completely agree, light is better.

Sharol
Maidenwolf , I made a tractor. It isn't huge. But I split 2X4s into 2X2s so it made it a lot lighter to move. Even so, it weighs a ton. I can move it once I get it off the ground but sometimes just lifting it is more than I can handle. Just sayin if you don't want to strain when you move it it is a good idea to use the lightest weight materials you can.
Looks like I am going to bite the bullet and spend a couple hundred dollars on an awesome cage for my chipmonks. I am just totally nuts. I have no room for it but it will be the perfect habitat for them. It sure was a lot nicer when I had a really big house! So now I need to figure out where on earth I am going to put this thing when I get it here. I just did some measuring and I can't find a place even remotely big enough. I have too much stuff in here for sure!! I guess I need to make some plans and move some things. I still haven't figured out if I have a boy and a girl or two boys yet. It would be nice if it were a mated pair so I could at least raise some babies to offset some expense.
I need to make a couple calls and see if I can get some other arrangements made to pick up some eggs and deliver a rooster this evening as well to save another trip.
I fired up a second incubator last night. Since I am trying to hatch some ducks I ran out of room.

Danz,
My daughter has terrible allergies also. I open up the window and air out the place for about 2 hours about once every month, except during rag weed & corn pollen season. Then we just re-breath the air in here.

It's a young full sized Bourbon Red, 12 weeks old, he's a cute little guy when he shows his stuff it's so cute! I hatched 4, I think I may have 3 Jakes now, I think the one that came up missing after the storm last week was a hen, her head was shaped thinner, not as wide. I didn't know what breed to get. I didn't want to get something that might cause a hunter to kill them, and I didn't want the double breasted ones that grow very fast and don't have a very long life. We started out naming them after the guys my daughters were dating, then we changed their names to Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Supper. I'm not sure if we'll actually eat them, and I don't even know when they would be ready. So far they have been for entertainment. We'll see how well they work with our place, if they start bothering the neighbors they'll go in the Treager. I've had chickens most of my life, but I'm a compete newbie with turkeys.

Josie, this dog has been in town & had been a house dog. The lady didn't research the breed before getting her & then got upset that she shed buckets if hair in the house. So no she has not been with animals. I tried to help this lady earlier to re-home her, but now she is getting tickets for her running loose.
Thanks Trish. I was wondering because I remember seeing a dog down in Ark city that had been a LGD on a farm but they had to move into town. If she hasn't had any exposure to chickens I wouldn't have the energy or patience for that!

THIS is my picked on EE
Very nice! I wouldn't worry too much about your EE. There is always one that gets bullied sadly. Especially because they are used to having a lot more space so they are probably kind of frustrated by being penned up. You might consider getting a flock block at the feed store. That always keeps my chickens busy when they have to be closed up and gives them something to peck other than each other!
I just popped on really quick to eggsclaim my eggsitement that one of the silkies hath laid her first eggs!! I found two tiny white ones in the duck house today! :)
Yesterday I was sitting on the deck and a guy about 16-17 years old came walking through the alley. A couple of the chickens "bock bock bocked" at him softly. He slowed down for a few seconds and bocked back at them once. He was just about out of my sight when he finally noticed I was out there. He looked away quickly and kept on walking. I don't see the problem. I bock at them, too.

Hahahaha! So funny!
Josie, that butterfly costume sounds like it was a fun memory :) I know I could have bought a premade costume online but she is really enjoying the creativity options in creating her own, as is her big sister with some help from mom too. I hope it will be a good memory for them. Lucie looks so pitiful in that pic! I am glad she is on the mend!
Thanks Danz! I think we lucked out that hobby lobby had a sale on their feathers. We might add some of yours as well :) Your peacock is the reason she wanted to be a peacock:) she has stuck with that costume choice ever since we were out there the last time. I bet your kids had some great costumes!!! A chicken, was my youngest's second choice:) A Silkie! No clue how I would have done that!!:)
My son has trouble choosing things like this.... My oldest made him up when he thought he might want to be the blue guy from Avatar.

But now he thinks he should be Darth Maul or the 10th Dr from Dr Who..... I am not sure what he will be :) My oldest just likes to dress up and since she bought elf ears at the renaissance faire, she is going to be an elf princess.... It is our favorite holiday:) we don't do much with the scary stuff, but pretending to be different things and dressing up is too much fun!
Wow! That is awesome! Your kids are very talented.
My little pullet died about 10:00 last night. It really breaks my heart. Now I am questioning myself about the others. I am still baffled how you could contract a cold when you are totally separated from all other birds. I can't help but wonder if DH didn't go down to water them or something after handling the sick bird we had caged in his shop. I would never suggest that he did but he just wouldn't think to wash his hands in between.
I guess I can disinfect their cage and hope for the best. Looks like I am in the market for a few more Olansk. Ouch! More money!!! It's not the cost of the bird as much as it is the cost of shipping.
Bummer, so sorry. That really stinks. Are you going to send her in for necropsy? It wouldn't hurt, she would need to go out today on ice to K state but if it is bacterial you would know what to treat the rest of the birds with so you don't lose more.

Well we did a ton yesterday and now I am just wiped out today. I have to get Lucie loaded up in the jeep and drive over to our horse vet to see if they will let me borrow a staple remover to take out a few of her staples in a small puncture wound. It keeps filling up with serous fluid so it really needs to drain. DH took blood work from her this morning and ran it at the clinic. She has some elevated liver enzymes which could be from healing for a side effect from the pain meds which is worrisome. She also has a high white cell count so we are adding another antibiotic and waiting to hear back from K State on what their recommendations is after they get the culture results. Sigh. She is getting a little stir crazy already which is awesome since she has 7 more weeks of strict kennel confinement!

Danz, I'm sorry about your pullet, that's the pits. I can't believe you got chipmunks to go with all the rest of your menagerie. I'll bet they are cute though! Do you have to buy special food for them or what do they eat? I hope you find out about your other pullet whether it's the right breed or not.

ChicknBaron, that's a very nice tractor, the chickens should enjoy that a lot & your yard will get fertilized too as you move it around.

Well I'm off to Wichita today for my hair appt., my hairdresser of over 15 years is going through a divorce & moved from Derby where she has been for quite awhile back to Wichita again, so I just go where she goes. She is the only one that has been able to really deal with my thin, fine hair, so I stay with her. She became a good friend too besides doing my hair. I'm a little better today, at least my nose isn't streaming, my chest is tight & when I cough it sounds tight too, hopefully that will loosen up soon & I can get over this crud. I took nyquil last night & it was supposed to last 6 hours, but I woke up in 4 coughing & couldn't take more. I did get back to sleep though thankfully.

Josie, I didn't see your post until I had posted, hope Lucie gets better soon.

I hope you all have a good day!
