Mammahen sounds like that little chick was bleeding and his chances of making it were nil. I'm so sorry. At least you tried. Life is so fragile.
I need to be moving to get things done. DH picked up some shavings for me last night and I need to change some in this bin of chicks I have in the house, in the brooder house, and replace some in a couple of the bigger houses that got cleaned out.
I haven't been getting my mouse traps set recently and I really need to do that again. I don't want them to get all carried away again and with cooler weather I am sure that will happen.
Joe Jordon, glad your ducks did okay. I have a bunch of eggs in the incubator right now. I am hoping to hatch out a large group for resale soon. I hadn't checked fertility since the summer heat so I hope I am not wasting time and energy. They certainly have been laying well though. Too bad the chickens aren't!!
Very pretty rooster Trish!

I thought I was going to go get an amazing pic of this deformed chick up and playing with the rest of them but that's not what happened. I went to the brooder with my camera and there was a massive mess of blood and yolk. This chick barely had a yolk sac sticking out, but I thought maybe it was pooling with blood in it's bottom. It's like the yolk sac got drawn into it's body but not absorbed, it's sticking way out now. I don't know how the yolk absorbs, but it's soaked through layers of paper towels twice now. This little chick can't possibly have any fluid left in it's little body. I'm going to get ready for bed and see how it's doing, but it won't be left to suffer all night. :(
So sorry - life is so fragile.

I also got a new rooster for my lavender Ameraucana breeding program tonight from a friend I had sold chicks to this spring, so one of my chicks came back home. I was needing one of my roosters from this year to breed back to my lavender hens next spring & this guy is just gorgeous & I'm so happy to be able to use him next year. He's just a sweetie & compared to his dad's disposition, an angel. I was able to pick him up tonight & pet him & he just snuggled up to me. Now I have to re-arrange birds & figure out where to put everyone for now until I can get another pen.

Here is a pic Maggie took of him:

The pic doesn't really do him justice, he's so much better looking than he looks here, he's a very handsome guy!

I just saw this on Craigslist: http://wichita.craigslist.org/grd/3357647150.html If anyone is needing a RP turkey jake.
He is a beautiful rooster - love the beard!

I saw that jake on CL too and its just amazing how much he is a dead ringer for Ned Kelly (though with a whole beak, sob, sob). If I didn't already have one, I'd be on that in a flash, but I don't need a male-male-female trio.

I was wondering about you the other day! I never did set mine. I'm still glad to have it though, because I know I will need it one day. I killed two mice with the little trap I got on Amazon and reset it, but never killed any more (its still there, set up and waiting for its next victim). Since then I've seen NO sign of mouse activity. No poop. No smell. No new tunnels dug. I told DH I must have only had two and after they were killed, no more problem. He scoffed and said there was no way I only had two mice. Mice never come in small numbers. The only thing I can figure is that they were a male & female who either hadn't got started on their family yet, or their young ones were too small to leave the nest so once the parents were killed, they died in the nest. Either way, I no longer seem to have a mouse problem. I do need to get the one set at the barn though. I have it in the car but keep forgetting to take peanut butter with me to bait it with.

.

I was met at the fence by Lucy, our little Serama hen Danz gave me. She made me smile even though my heart was broken over losing Tookie. She followed me on her tiny little legs while I scooped up ducks and replaced their water. Once I got them all settled in I scooped her up and carried her with me while I checked over feed and water levels for the others. When I raked the hen house, I put her in one of the nesting boxes and she just stayed there and watched until I was done. Then she hopped down and followed me back to the fence when I left. She was such a comfort on such an awful day.

Later when I went back out to check on the birds again, Tom the turkey started displaying all over the place for me. I've never seen him do it before and it was just hilarious.
We can find such comfort in our animals. When they are attuned to our behaviors it is nice to see when they know something is off. It is difficult for me to lose an animal too, I am the crazy animal lady that people bring injured and sick pets to for help. I am that person that will save any animal if I can. I feel for your pain and just hope that your other birds can ease that pain. My birds have brought me out of depression and I owe them lots, I feel lucky each and every day to have them. All I have to do is walk out my front door and when I see them running to great me I smile. I just hope your loss is comforted by these precious birds that depend on you.

How well said, Maidenwolf!
Animals, birds, etc can sense when something is off. People can argue that till they are blue in the face but I believe it. It is a wonderful thing just to be able to sit back and enjoy nature and God's best creations. It can make even the worst day better!

Good morning friends; I have to deliver the 3s' to a opossum just now. It really just chaps my hide too. Three of those 4 miracle chicks were eaten last night plus all the eggs in the coop. I don’t leave food outside of the coop for the chickens. It’s in a hanging feeder. I let them out in the day and shut them in when home from work. I don’t feed cats or dogs outside. Just have lots of coons and opossums in the area. Between all the ponds and fruit trees it’s a good place. Normally when I trap a possum I just let it go. They really don’t do much damage to the big chickens, but eggs and chicks they can really do damage. So possum in the hen house = SSS. My last chick is injured I hope it makes it. Its name is Miracle!
By the way you guys may be right I dont have starlings or house sparrows. I see a few at the feeder now and again but not in my chicken house. May be why I dont have disease issues. man I always learn on here. By the way they make a repeating sparrow trap. I have one used to use it allt he time when I ran blue bird trails. Catches em live so you can let the song birds go.

Sorry for your losses. Yep - opossums can do some damage when they set their mind to it. You don't really have a choice at this point.

Just to set the record straight possums do eat birds, they ate 7 of my guineas last year when I had them in a chainlink dog run. They eat the guts out & leave the carcass.

Well I've got to get out there & put my pen back together for temporary accommodations for my new roo until he is quarantined for awhile, then he will be joining his hens in the pen. I didn't know when I took that pen apart that I would need it only a few days later, but what can you say when a friend needs help but yes I'll take the hen. Then things like that rooster don't fall in your lap every day either, he's just too nice to be anything but a breeder, he's even better looking than his dad. Hopefully he will produce some nice chicks for me next spring.

I'm going to get another load of cattails this afternoon too if they don't all blow out on the way back home. We're going to go watch Sunflowerparrot & her friend process their broilers tomorrow morning too so we can see their equipment & how everything goes. I want to raise some in the spring too for us, but I will need to make some kind of pen for them before then. It never ends does it, you just keep adding pens here & there, now I see how you ended up with so many pens & buildings Danz.
