Consolidated Kansas

Wow! Tapatalk actually let me log in today! I haven't been able to for quite a while! I read while on the run and use my phone. I am always doing work on the computer and know that if I got on here.... It wouldn't get done :) I would just read away!

Welcome to the newcomers!

Hawkeye, I am so sorry about your wreck! I was hit by a truck a few years ago- his fault and he was honest, but he lost his job due to his honesty.... I never can stomach lies, but maybe he was trying to protect his family from being without income? I always would rather assume the least intentionally hurtful choice, but there are some folks that just can't admit a mistake period. I make far too many on a regular basis to go that route :) Congrats on your wins!!! Beautiful birds!!!

Sharol, your grand baby is so precious! Congratulations!!!

Lizzy, your duck story made me laugh! I have had dogs get in similar predicaments.

Tweety, so sorry you are struggling with health so. I hope this new treatment helps!!

Josie, how is Lucy? I never was brave enough to use cloth. I needed the time saving element of paper diapers as a single mom, but then I only had one of my kids as a baby and toddler :) The youngest came to me at 4 and 3 yrs and already potty trained. These all in one diapers sound interesting. I wonder if they make any for kids with disabilities to help them feel when they go. We change clothes constantly at school so that they can feel and hopefully learn. Wicking diapers definitely get in the way of that:-(

Trish, Dana and your son are in my prayers.....

Momma hen, I second the egg white recommendation. I also keep Silvadene. I had a bad grease burn many years ago and that stuff literally saved me. I hope it feels better and wasn't a full thickness burn.

Danz, your baby chicks are so sweet! The five little ones we had are not little any more! The biggest is now as big as my d'uccle! They are all out with the big birds and doing well. I love hering their peeps instead of just cackling :) All of them are healthy and no curly toes either. The one that couldn't walk for what ever reason is almost pure white. I have my suspicions about the splash rock possibly being a roo as well as the Sussex, but one day they look more rooish, and the next not so much. I can't figure it out yet.

We have been getting eggs now. None seem to lay every day, but I adore my colorful basket. The kids love going to collect them everyday, just to see what color combo we have:)

My youngest's peacock costume turned out fine. Not exactly what I wanted, but the shortage of time here is killing me. My oldest has had band every weekend and most evenings. Then 7am rehearsals....

Add soccer and music lessons and my own after school responsibilities.... I hardly know which end is up! Here is a quick snap in her parade. I will get a better one later this evening. Her big sister made her an amazing mask which she chose to not wear at school so that she could surprise people with it tonight.

Try egg white. Supposedly applying egg white puts collagen back into the skin that is destroyed by burning. When it dries it makes a protective shield. I've read where egg white has saved a few lives of burn victims by keeping infection out and that the collagen in it keeps the burns from becoming big scars.
I've read this too but have never tried it.

Medawinks so happy to see you on here! I was really starting to worry about you. You are way too overworked.

Ha! Ha! I closed the lids so he couldn't get in there again. I've been outside and he has been napping so heaven knows if that was the case.!
I've been out moving birds around. I got the lemon cuckoos and the lavender cuckoos moved to another building and separate pens. I moved my oldest Swedish flower hens out to a coop from the brooder. Maybe in a few more weeks I can move the younger ones out with them. I got the some birds moved around in the brooder, and moved my bin full of Brahmas, the Breda, and the d'uccles out to the brooder house.
I need to be out there doing some more building but I needed to come in and take a break for a minute. I need to rig a heat lamp up for the baby duck pen so I can move them out there when they all get done hatching and dry. I could honestly use much longer days. I was going to move some roosters to a different pen so I could use their existing pen to catch some others but I decided it could wait another day.

What a day! It was 86 degrees here and beautiful today, we usually have wind most days about 30 mph some days 45 or 50mph, loved being outside today. My poor chickens and turkeys were panting like puppies. They drank water all day long, and dug in the shade and were lazy all afternoon. They go from 23 degrees one week and 86 the next. Amazing!

I've got one chicken that doesn't lay until about 6:20pm, anyway to change her laying clock?

CUTE costume!!

Danz,
With a daughter out of college and one in college we went to several of their friend's weddings that used Peacock feathers in their decorations, and they paid for them. They got their ideas on Pinterest. One of the weddings had peacock feathers that didn't have color they were pretty also. I've never seen peacock feathers that were white and what I'd call it shades of tan.

X2 on the Aloe Vera for burns. I have been using it for years for all kinds of burns & skin irritations including sunburn. I'll tell you my story that sold me on the stuff. My son was really little, probably 2 or 3. I had a hot pot of soup sitting on the stove & he somehow knocked it off & it went all down the front of him, from his chest down his belly & he had no shirt on. I grabbed my aloe vera gel, I was selling some products at the time & had a jar of it handy. I smeared the stuff all over the front of him & it was red as fire. I stood there & just watched as the redness disappeared & there wasn't one blister, none. Since then I have kept aloe vera get on hand always. The only place now that I find the clear kind without any coloring is Walgreens, they have it in tubes 2/$5. I also have growing aloe plants around & they multiply like crazy so I have quite a few pots of them now. If you want to use the raw plant, just break off a chunk of leaf & break it open. Rub the gel on the skin. It does help with the pain too.

Well I started writing this two hours ago & then my egg customer came & someone else & had to do chores, so I'm finally back here to finish this.

It's funny how when I have moved chickens from the grow-out pen to the main coop that there just isn't that big of an adjustment for everyone. I guess they have checked each other out through the wire & they all know each other even though they haven't really been together. I moved those two little roosters in there yesterday & today they were just hanging out with everyone else & nobody really hassled them that much. But when I brought in the two hens from outside & integrated them they knew they were new & there was some pecking order & still is with them & the RIR hen I got from my friend. I guess they're smarter than we give them credit for being. They all have to know their place in the order of things & if you're new you're at the bottom. I only have one more rooster over in the grow-out pen that needs to go & then all the rest of the birds in there are breeding stock that go in the breeder coop & pens. You know I said that there are two lavender Orp/porcelain isabel roosters that I need to get rid of, but one is getting just huge like the other one I kept & the other one is still small like the pullet I have. Danz, you said the Orpingtons take a lot longer to mature & tell if they're roosters or pullets or not & now I'm kind of wondering about this one since it's so much smaller. It has a lot bigger comb & it's pink compared to the other one that I know for sure is a pullet. I will have to take some pics & see what you all think if I get the time tomorrow. If it happens to be a pullet then I'll keep it for my laying flock, but I sure don't need another rooster if that's what it is. It's just strange because the other two I have are getting just really tall & have big legs & are getting really heavy, but this one is still small like the pullet, but they don't look alike. I had both lavender Orpingtons I hatched from eggs I bought & then the lavender Orpington/porcelain isabels I got from Chooks & at this point I really can't tell them apart that well. I was thinking the rooster I kept was just lavender Orpington, but we'll find out I guess if they all start getting the lacing on the feathers. I lost some of the Orps early on, so it's possible I may only have the ones from Chooks now. It will be interesting to see how they feather out.

Danz, congrats on the hatch, it looks like you got quite a mixed bunch there. I may just get some of the blue barred rocks from you next spring if you have some instead of ordering regular ones from the hatchery. That would be interesting to have some of the blue ones.

I forgot to say Welcome Coop Group to BYC & the KS thread!

Medawinks, I love the peacock costume, adorable!

Well I have to get back to work, have a good night all!

Yeah the chickens are really good at tilling, they "tilled" up my flower bed by the front door, it's a total disaster now.

Sorry, it's probably not as funny to you as it is to me!

I'm new to BYC. I don't have hens yet but I'm trying to get my special use permit approved in Overland Park. I'll follow your thread!

Welcome! Good luck on the permit; no one who wants chickens should have to go without.

Do you have an aloe vera plant? I burnt myself pretty bad a couple years ago. I was talking on my cell phone while trying to take something out of the oven. The oven we had then was small and was about 3 1/2 - 4 feet off the ground, so I had to reach OVER the door to get to the stuff inside. I managed to touch my forearm on the inside of the oven. I couldn't immediately remove it either, because I'd either drop my phone onto the oven door or drop our supper onto the floor. I pulled a leaf off of my aloe vera plant, cut it open a ways and held it on the burn for a while. When it started to hurt again, I'd squeeze the leaf again to get more juice on the burn. It helped tremendously!

I've never heard of using egg white. I'll have to try to remember to try it. I burn myself often enough that I keep an aloe vera plant around, too. It has to be from the plant; I've found the aloe gel from the store doesn't work the same way at all. The day I burn myself, it seems like the aloe isn't really working because the burned spot stays hot, but the next day it's improved tremendously.

We have been getting eggs now. None seem to lay every day, but I adore my colorful basket. The kids love going to collect them everyday, just to see what color combo we have:)

I know there's no real difference in the eggs, but it's so much more fun to have a colorful egg basket.

Sera's costume is beautiful. My niece is in color guard and she's just ready for it to be over, it's nice to see your DD seems to still be enjoying it!

Did you notice all the people texting in that picture. Some times I wonder if our younger generation will just stop talking and communicate only by text??? Sorry! That crosses my mind quite a bit when I stand in a check out line and every one in front or behind me has their phone in their hand.

Me too!
Maidenwolf you are too sweet. I would love to get together with any of you. A few of us have gone to the Wichita area a couple times for a get together. It's been so much fun. Josie lives in between me and you...for now. Sharol lives a little further West and so does Chickes, duckies etc.

I am sitting here chuckling to myself. My oldest cat who is 16 has been showing up wet. The last couple days when he jumps up here to sprawl all over the keyboard and my hands his tail, his feet and his whole underside have been soaked. The cats have a water fountain to drink from and love it. So I am thinking to myself the only other place in the house he could get wet like that is the toilet. He has no need to drink from the toilet so do you suppose he is trying to potty train himself?
LOL! I actually have a cat that uses the toilet and trained himself. I used to have a cat that loved to play in the toilet bowl. He would splash up the bathroom before he was finished playing. I kept that toilet spotless!

OXINE Oxine or activated Oxine will it harm clothes? Bleach spray will sure mess up clothes. How careful do I need to be spraying or using a fogger?
I use it a lot but can't answer your question. Hope someone else knows.

Ah ha! Well, the LF will at least give you better eggs... when they decide to lay! ;)

Thank you so much!! You know, the hawks are still hanging around here. Yesterday, I ran out because I had some silkies out in the yard uncovered and there was a hawk circling up above them. I ran out there and stayed out there until he moved on. Then I started gathering stuff to put over their pen. I came up with some really ghetto ideas! LOL I grabbed a baby gate and put it over the pen on one side. I really need to get some poultry netting. My DH came home and raised an eyebrow at my assemblage of "crap" over the pen. He didn't even ask. Before, he would have thrown a big fit that I was making the place look bad. I think he gives up... for now. I told him I want him to drill those holes for my new pens. I'm like Danz-- -I'm waiting for him to do it, because honestly, I'm not that great at making the auger go down into the ground at the correct angle and getting the posts set right. SO anyway, instead of arguing about my genius idea of covering the pen... he didn't say anything because he didn't want to get out there and drill my holes. hehehe I hope you are feeling better soon! I HATE being sick!!

OH my! I think I'd investigate what he's up to! LOL I'd hate for it to be toilet water!
lol.png
And yes, our group gatherings have been SO MUCH FUN!

lau.gif

LOL! So your DH has been reduced to careful avoidance of the entire topic. I've suspected my own of the same. The poor dears! And thanks for the well wishes, I am a bit better today. I hate it too, there's so much I need to get done and it slows me down.

Karen, I hope your "daughter" doesn't loose all her things. I can't imagine how devastating a flood would be. I just had a basement flood in 93 and the destruction was awful. The after effects were even worse.
Karen what are you doing on your little breeding pens for winter? Are you going to run extension cords to heat water or what? I am seriously considering building some separate facilities for some of these birds. I want to finish the trailer but even if I do DH still has to get the foundation part done. He has made no attempts whatsoever. Nothing much has gotten done around here. He spends so much time rethinking it all that the action gets delayed forever.
Kansas Prairie, LF cochins are big birds. I would assume they would be a good meat bird but then I'm not sure anyone would want to butcher one. I've sold some half breeds for butchering. The hens are not supposed to be great layers but mine have turned out pretty darned good. I have one white cochin who always laid by the back porch. She is in molt right now. She would lay 5 of 7 days without a hitch. I personally believe they are pretty average layers but not like a production hen or a leghorn. They are great incubators for sure.
I've got to do some major bird moving today. I have 2 large bins of chicks in here and a ton of chicks in the hatcher that have to come out. I need to make some more room in the brooder house, but to do that I have to move some birds out. I need to shuffle pens. I still have to complete dividing one house and pen as well. Never ends around here. I 'd sure be more up for it if it were warmer outside.
Thanks Danz, that's the very thing I'm concerned about. She has a lot of expensive equipment at home so I hope she got it out or at least to the upper floor.

I've been debating what to do about the breeder pens for water. I'm toying with a couple different ideas but haven't settled on anything yet. Do you have any good suggestions for me? One option (not a fav!) is to just break ice frequently and the other is to move all the birds to the coop during the coldest months. I need to make a decision because I'll need to make more ventilation in the coop (that I've been putting off) before the snow flies! I have a second energizer ordered but is backordered until the beginning of March. At that point, I'll probably split the poultryNet fence between the coop area and the east side of the unfinished shop area. I could electric fence in the breeder pens next to the unfinished shop area and it would be easy to run electricity to each breeder house for the water heaters from there. My ducks will have a house to shelter in with heated waterer outside of their house. Those are my thoughts for now. What do you think?

I wish you success! Welcome!

Danz,
Saw a bidet today, thought of your cat. LOL Well, I think it was you talking about a wet cat.

My mom used to put aloe vera on sunburns when I was a teen. Before that it was vinegar. I wasn't at all impressed with wearing vinegar!
