Consolidated Kansas

Every one of you here are wonderful. I can't help but say praises for all your suggestions. You are an amazing group.
It makes me feel good to be associated with such caring group. I do love the recipes and the suggestions.
Lizzy that was a particularly amazing list.
I've been out working until it got so dark I couldn't see. I got my red star hens caged earlier today. I took down their dog kennel pen and used a couple panels inside my big chicken pen to make a smaller pen. Then when the other birds went to bed I moved the red stars into that pen. I have several birds that sleep in that house so I had to wait for them to go to roost before I could move the red stars in. I will have to keep all of them penned up for a while until they figure out that is where they are supposed to sleep. I am going to have some very upset chickens the next week or so. I can't let any of them out or it will ruin the move. I sure hope they don't quit laying but they probably will.
Then I decided to work on the old garage pen where the owl had visited late last night. I put some footing boards down and started hanging chicken wire to cover the whole length. It is about 20 feet across there. I got it done other than making a door. So I just hung a stretch of chicken wire where the door would be after the chickens went to bed. I had to leave the bottom open because my pekin ducks go in there at night at some point. I'm not sure how I'm going to remedy that cause they go when they feel like it.
While I was doing all my owl proofing and moving I discovered that I am missing a red cochin hen and her little brahma baby she hatched. They had been sleeping under the hen house rather than inside it. I suppose the owl got both of them.
And I also discovered the body of one of my salmon favorelles in the garage pen I was working on and her head a few feet from it. Apparently I scared the owl off right after she ripped the hen's head off. It just makes me furious. I told DH if I could set up a trap with sacrificial chicken out where I could just sit and wait there would be one dead owl for sure.
I depend on my birds for what money I do have and it really infuriates me that this stupid predatory bird is killing them. There are dead bodies in the burn barrel. Why don't they just take those instead??
I have a person coming in about a week to buy my cochins (colors I am not going to breed any more) and I can see the dollars going down the drain due to this stupid predator.

Again, thank you all for being so wonderful and offering what you can to help Amber and her family. You are such an awesome group.

Katoranger - I live just 7 miles west of Parsons, just south of Dennis. Altamount is also not far. I'm a newbie here myself. Welcome! By the way, we're also hoping to move - over to Wilson County. The fellow that owns this place (he cares for my adult special needs son) has made just today madean offer on a house/land today, but assuming he gets the place, we won't be moving till spring. I have 2 rir's (came with my coop, from Parsons). I had 3 but one got killed by a hawk. Now I also have 3 light brahma (one rooster and two hens). As of tomorrow I'll have 3 more light brahma and 2 buff brahma, all juvenile bantams. So my little flock is growing. It helps to have a rooster now who alerts the hens to when its time to hide under the low-lying pine tree branches. He's on constant alert for hawks and other predators. Come spring, assuming we get the house we are hoping for, there will be expanded chicken home space, and we'll grow the flock, particularly focusing on breeding the light brahma line, which i absolutely love. Sara

Miss you too, Karen. I do hope you get better soon!
By the way, I wanted to solute two of our special members!

This is national adoption month. These two wonderful ladies have adopted several needy children and are both the most awesome Mom's I know!
Please take a moment to congratulate them and praise them for taking children that otherwise would not have had a fair chance at life.
Love you two!

Mommahen - I went right past Humboldt yesterday - had to go up to KC and went up on 169. You're right, its really not that far! I thought of you as we drove past, waved and sent a verbal hello - which made my driver think I had completely lost it, talking to "Mommahen" (grin) till I explained. Anyways, was nice to be able to know there was a chicken friend "out there". Sara

<I'm also in SE Kansas, Humboldt.>

Another really cheap single-serve dish we will make is to cook up ramen noodles (6/pack is $1) per the package directions and then after the 2 minutes, add an egg. Stir for a minute and serve. It adds some nutrition to a meal that would otherwise not have much.

I have an amazing recipe for ramen noodle salad that I make for just about every pot-luck and everyone wants the recipe. It's really easy and really cheap and you can stuff yourself with it!

1/2 head of cabbage (or bag of cole slaw mix)
2 packages oriental ramen noodles
1/2 cup oil
1/4 cider vinager
1/4 sugar
Optional: sunflower seeds or almond slices

Shred the cabbage
break up the ramen noodle packet and toast in oven
Mix all ingredients together (including the seasoning packets) and refridgerate for a couple hours. Don't overeat!!

Hechicken
Your receipe for your "Egg Potatoes" sound like a receipe I have only using hash browns.
What I do, is make a bunch hash browns. and freeze. Take out what you need for a meal, I use like 2 cups, but, that depends on family size.
Brown the hash browns, when they are done, make some holes in the hash browns, leave some on the bottem, but make some "WELLs" in the potatoes, crack and egg into each of the wells, lower the temp, place a lid on the dish and let the eggs cook. When the eggs are done, you can crumble some bacon, or chopped ham, and sprinkle some cheese over top place the lid back on and melt cheese. My kids just loved this dish. You could add some salsa, or bell peppers, onion really is a very easy to add to and make a fun dish.
Oh, I will have to try that - it sounds scrumptious!

I am so sorry you are having these issues with owls. I sure hope you are able to take care of the problem before it takes care of many more of your birds.

That's so frustrating about your birds; I hope the owl moves on soon.

YES! I totally agree. My SIL has two adopted kids. It's not easy to adopt; there were plenty of roadblocks every step of the way.

My husband loves this stuff. Now I have a recipe! Thank you.

I love the idea of sharing ways to cut costs and sparking new ideas :)

We don't have a home phone or cable. I do have Internet and a family unlimited data and text cell plan though, but share it with my dad, my daughter and a friend. I use my teaching to get a 15%discount for all of us. I have Netflix and Hulu plus and a Roku player and DVD player. No need for more! I can set limits easily on Netflix by keeping them on Netflix for kids much easier than I could control the types of TV they would watch with cable. Keeps my kids from seeing all the commercials telling them that they need the newest toy or gadget too :)

I have a portable electric fireplace and a gas fireplace in my living room, which we have used just a few times this fall. I have not turned the heat on yet:) We really havent needed it since the house is well insulated. I do have 2 big standard poodles that keep rooms warm just by breathing. No joke. I have one sleep in my girls room and one in my sons room. They also snuggle up and act as living hot water bottles. I have a miniature sized mix who sleeps with me and keeps me warn.

I am trying to go towards the homemade pantry items and using more whole foods and less prepared foods. We like cheesy egg hashbrowns too!

One dish my kids love is rice and raisins. I fix a large rice cooker of sticky rice ( short grain) mixed with brown rice. I add raisins while it is cooking. I fry up a pkg of link sausage and slice them rather thinly, like carrot coins. I add just a bit of brown sugar while I fry them and pour the grease and sugared sausage into the rice and stir it up well. The kids love this with a bit of cold milk on it. It's good for breakfast lunch or dinner and is a nice mix of savory and sweet.

My oldest is a pro at doctoring up ramen noodles. She made some the other day with adding a can of tomato soup and a bit of cheese. It was yummy! Just one can of tomato soup flavored 4pkgs of ramen and the littles wanted her to make more for their lunch thermos:)

I watch the sale flyers for Aldi's Dillons and Hyvee. If I only buy the sale items and stock up, planning meals after I grocery shop the sales, it really helps. Otherwise I would want go get what I am hungry for and it is never on sale. Looking at Pinterest is sometimes dangerous- but if I just save the recipes and don't consider trying to make them until I have a sale main ingredient. It works.

We also make the laundry soap. My son loves to grate the soap bar:) It works well! I much prefer it to the premade, because I love adding lavender and mint oils to the dry powder and having my clothes smell so good! It is definitely a stress relief combo I crave :)

We also use vinegar to clean :) When I mention that at school, I get sideways glances. Nice to know I am not alone!

I am going to try trading eggs for beeswax soon, and learn how to make body butter. I found a recipe for it that I want to try. I am hoping it will make good gifts for Christmas and cut that cost down a bit.

I also do surveys online. I can't remember who mentioned that. Swag bucks is good too! I have earned many Amazon gift cards by simply searching the Internet. Saving the points for Christmas or when the cards are cheapest ( for swag bucks trading) has really helped our budget also.

Teachers pay teachers is another source of income for anyone who can write a lesson plan or make graphics to be used in lessons.

Have you tried Etsy to sell creatively pkgd dog treats?
Hand made gifts seem to be very popular right now and sell well. I have a friend who buys wool sweaters from Goodwill, Salvation Army etc... And felts them into cute purses. She also knits dishcloths and pkgs them up so uniquely that they sell like hot cakes. Very little time and money invested.

Free cycling is a good way to find things if you are in a big enough community. I have also made online friends through adoption who trade/share kids clothing. There is also a website just for that, but I can't remember it's name right now:-(

I will keep thinking! I love the recipes and ideas that have been shared.

Danz, no.... I can't tell if any of them are roosters yet. They are so darn friendly. The one I hand fed for almost a week jumps out of the cage- a roosts along my sun porch wall- every time I open the door. She has to be held! Just funny. Maybe he will be really lucky and they will all be hens :) I hope that darned owl gets what is due.... I have a pic of Duke :)

We have a blue Ameracauna I love. The blue and lavender are my favorite color too :)

Josie- so glad Lucy is mending well! Please be careful- for you and her. Getting hurt is not an optimal activity for either of you :)

Is there a chicken event in Shawnee co in Dec? I think I remember reading something to that effect. What would it be? Should I plan on taking my kids :)?
Exhaustion is overtaking me:) I hope it is a good restful night for all.

Oh, I forgot! Thanks Danz!! November is national adoption month:) I was even lucky enough to be at the US consulate in Guangzhou in November 4 years ago to celebrate it by finalizing US citizenship for my youngest. Amazing experience!!

I make no claims at having figured out this parenting puzzle, however! But working it out with my kids is definitely my biggest joy in life :)

My two youngest definitely have grown in my heart and are true blessings to our family. The "spice" they have added to my life is truly a gift from above!

There are so many kids just needing to be loved. The blessings sown are priceless. It is definitely a different journey from biological pregnancy, but is equally as rewarding. I highly recommend it to every family who feel they might have an empty seat at their table:)
