Consolidated Kansas

Sapphire, I'm so sorry about your loss. What rotten luck. :(

Danz, it makes it seem more profitable to have bird that you can sell for more. Then there is the downside, if you lose an expensive bird it hurts more. As much cajun food that we eat it's funny that I don't know that I've ever eaten Jerusalem artichokes, I do love artichokes though. They're on my list right now. I stuck with my $2 per mo of age for the chicks, I got $6 each for 3 mo olds. If they are more than just mutts I'm hoping I can ask a little more. So this month, I got $18 from selling and 2 roos became dinner so I figure that's $30 off of my feed bill. I need to keep track of what I'm spending on their feed. It's hard because we don't get an itemized bill, they just tell us what we owe and we pay it once per month. It would probably be smart to keep track anyway.

We still have an Altel plan on our phones too. They keep trying to get us to switch to their plans and we've refused. I don't care so much about the smart phones either. It would be nice if I were away from the internet a lot but I'm always home. The other thing about the smart phones that I read is that they are programmed to use wi-fi whenever it's available. That part is what why I decided against them. Why would I pay for wi-fi, then pay for the data package to use the internet I already paid for? The whole thing just sounds crooked to me. I don't remember if I wrote it or not but when I was reading about getting reimbursed for the forced data there were more things that came up that has been going on. For instance, Verizon was selling internet as unlimited but if you used more than a certain amount they would say you were going against the contract and stop service for those people and then the customers couldn't return their devices for a refund even though Verizon discontinued their internet service. We checked into getting Verizon's "Network Extender" whatever that is, it was supposed to make our phones work better from home. Now what gets me, is that they were going to send it to us and if we liked it and it worked we pay the $200 dollars to keep it. If it didn't work for us, we just had to pay the % restocking fee. I don't understand why I need to pay for a device to make my phone work at home, it's already supposed to work at home. I mean we were paying them $220 per month for the 6 phones and you'd think that having been a loyal customer for 12 years they'd care enough to make me happy. I know Altel changed to Verizon but it wasn't us who switched, we stayed right where we are. Anyway, I feel like the cell phone companies have us all in a tough spot and I don't like that. I know how to make my files public but I don't want to keep giving them away all the time. It would be nice to benefit from it a little bit. I'm guessing I'm going to have to pay for a service if I want to be able to sell for instand download. What should I mix the soy meal in? The Olandsk is absolutely gorgeous! I look at the price for selling and I think that's awesome, but the hit you take when you lose them and that's scary. Do you think they are more fragile? I'm so glad there is one less owl to worry about, that was so gutsy to be hunting during the daylight.

maidenwolf, hang the chicory... like on the clothes line? How do I keep the bugs off? I never considered eating dandilions and now I don't want to because I know that ours have been sprayed. I wonder how long until that's stuff is gone? Perhaps we will try that next spring when new ones come up.

I know right where Shreveport is Sharol. I don't to ever live in Louisiana again but it's nice to go to visit still. I still have lots of family there.

Hawkeye, your coop looks amazing. The pic, that's beautiful. You're an amazing photographer.

I'm so sorry COOP Group, there must be some way around it. It sounds like your neighbor is misinnformed. Hawkeye sounds like she knows what she is talking about. I would defitely go get your own copy to review, you never know, you may need it again sometimes. Please keep us updated.

Mike, I'm sorry you are having to deal with dial up, I so remember that and how much time it took just to do something little. It's terrible how people are suffering right here close by, times are very hard and I'm sure we all have had struggles at times. Hugs to maidenwolf, she's a tough lady and she's working hard to get through this.

I found the owl on the dewlap goose at NOON one day. There is nothing in nature set in stone. I worry about the birds on overcast days, not only because of the owl I saw out, but also because that is when the trapper said they will hunt because of the dimmer light.

I know for a fact owls have no problem going to the ground to engage my hens. Hawks on the other hand like to make that quick dive and fly off. I have seen several attempted attacks by hawks on my hens. The girls get to the fence and hunker down. The hawk can't get at the hen because there is no room to maneuver. I will have to remain extra vigilant this winter for predators.

Mommahen- Bugs usually dont mess with the stuff I hang. You can also use a screen like from a window or old door and lay it on bricks at the corners so it is open underneath and a brick on top all corners to hold it down and lay them that way. You can pin things down with safety pins. If you find that bugs are bothering it you can hang fresh mint to dry next to it to deter bugs or hang it inside. Last fall it was cold earlier than I could get my basil done so my whole kitchen and bedroom had basil hanging on strings everywhere to dry lol. I dont know how long the poison stays but maybe search other areas of your property or a park etc. We have been out collecting before, lol Ithink people must have thought us crazy as they drove by seeing us putting dandelions in a basket.

I have made teh decision to sell 2 of my tom turkeys. I just cant have them fighting and hurting one another all the time. It is constant. They need a home were they can be seperate from a bunch of toms. They are good boys and would make great pets, they love treats and attention and when I seperate them from the others they return to their friendly selves. If anyone is interested please pm me.
I also made a difficult decison to take out too roos, they were getting aggressive with the hens and anytime one moved they would grab her to mate and the other would see this and run to stop him and grab her after he let go so he could mate her.. They are chasing the younger ones off food and grabbing the younger males and pulling out their feathers and eating them, not sure what that is all about, today one of them dragged a hen out off the nest to mate. I dont know if I am making the right decision to cull here or is this just behavior I will see regardless?

I think you are making the right decisions... It's hard giving up pets, but you can't sacrifice other pets for the sake of one or two. I learned that when I had to first get rid of one of my ducks because she was constantly biting and chewing on another's wing. Besides, if you cull, instead of just give away, that's more money for dinner (whether it's the bird itself or the money from selling them).

So I candled the eggs that my silkie is sitting on and they are definitely NOT fertile. They were all completely clear, with the yolk just floating as I turned the egg. So, i'm going to get 3 fertile silkie eggs tomorrow and exchange these out. Hopefully my hen can't count days. LOL

For all of those that are asking, I've been feeling a lot better these past couple days. Knock on wood that it means the botox worked!

maidenwolf, I think you are making the right decision. I wish I were closer and could come pick one up right now.

Tweety, that's wonderful news. I'm so happy to hear that you are feeling better.
