Maidenwolf, I'm pretty sure my dh will be going to Emporia in the next few days. Maybe we can work something out to meet with Danz and deliver again. Danz, you in on that?

Internet is miserably slow tonight. Here's the link to Maidenwolf's chick pics they are still uploading and have been for a very long time. More will continue to come to this folder.

Oh that would so surprise my kids if they came early. You did a beautiful job taking care of my chicks and making sure they hatch, thank you so much.

I candled the eggs and 5 out of 6 have babies,, I dropped one of the 5 and the growing fetus came out and I just feel so terrible. I guess I need to be more careful. I am so excited though because I saw the babies move and saw the eye and the veins oooo I feel better that I know the high temps I saw did not harm them.

Sharol I would think that would work. The last time I used blue kote I put a pair of rubber gloves on thinking I was being smart. but forgot and put the bird up against me when I opened the gate to put it back out and ended up permanently dying my pink sweatshirt. Oh well. The chickens don't care what it looks like.

I used Blue Kote on one of my chicks and everyone relentlessly pecked and chased it until the color faded. It took a few days before the flock would leave it alone.

Great pictures in there! I looked them over and you got excellent photos of the candling, too! WOW! Cute chicks!

Hawkeye, I really hope you get some chicks from those eggs. I'll bet you'll have a sweet surprise.

Trish, can I see a pic of what you are wanting to crochet? I'm wanting to make a hat out of fleece that I can scrunch around my face and long enough to go over my neck and tuck into my coat.

Danz, do you think that maybe it's because there is less water that it froze this year and not last?

I'm having a lot of fun with Maidenwolf's chicks. Most of them hatched beautifully on their own, the conditions remained steady but after 24 hours of a few of them pipped with no progress I went ahead and 'helped' if you can call it that. Two of the chicks I'm sure it really helped out. One had a shell that was so hard it was difficult to get into at all. The little chick gasped when I opened it and actually scared me. Another chick I'm not sure what was wrong but he was weak and the membrane was dry and there was no bleeding, he recovered quickly with just leaving him alone. There were 2 chicks that had a yolk sac issue, I'm sure they just weren't ready yet but they were going to be shrink wrapped since I had to help the others. One little chick, it seems like it was about a day behind the others in development, I don't know how that could be. All 4 that I helped are alive, 3 are fine and one still struggling but improving. I'm just not too hopeful that it's definitely going to be okay yet. All yolk sac issues are resolved, all chicks are in the brooder even the not so strong one. I'm dipping it's beak regularly to make sure it gets some calories. These little chicks are so beautiful, and one I think my dd slipped into the incubator with them because it was unmarked and looks like ours. So right now, I have 20 something chicks that hatched 10ish days ago and then I think 13 in the group from Maidenwolf all set up in the house. I keep going to the incubator to check on nothing, I get in such a habit of checking it. There are 3 brooders set up because some of the new chicks are tiny ones and I don't want them to get trampled.
Thanks for the vote of confidence on my eggs, but I highly doubt they are fertile-- my hen that died had been separated in the girl pen for weeks-- NO boys around. I only had a boy jump the fence a couple of times and I think I caught it early. Then I when I finally left a boy in with the girls, I'm trying to remember, but I don't think she had layed since then. The chances of them being fertile are so low. Sigh. :( Sounds like you had a really rough go with those chicks getting out! Four babies that needed help is a LOT! I'm glad that the 3 look okay. The weak one just might not make it. I've had several weak chicks and they usually hang around a couple of days and then you find them dead. I sure hope not, but that is my experience.

Sorry about the dropped egg. Sounds like the rest will be okay! :)

Sunflower--- you don't seem to have the typical responses from your flock that most people do! I had to laugh that the blue kote made them chase the bird-- I've NEVER heard of that! Hope that R-COM is working great for you! :)

Yesterday I went shopping (had gift cards) and while I was out I started to feel bad. Achy, fever, etc. Came home and got worse and went to bed early. But i feel much better this morning, just a little sore and a cough. I think it mostly bypassed me, thank goodness! I've been taking Zinc, Vit C and Echichea (sp??) and wonder if that might have helped slow it down or just not progress like it would have. I was thinking I was really in for it. I'm tired this morning, but at least I don't have the chills and horrible flu symptoms I was starting last night.

Now, my Dh on the other hand is so sick. His temp kept going up to 104 and over! I kept telling him I need to take him to the ER but he kept refusing. We were able to keep his temp down under 102 the rest of the night with lots of drinking water and asprin, etc... I told him I don't think his antibiotics are working. He has strep throat and I know that when you're working with a Staph infection it can easily turn into meningitis and I am worried he won't let me do anything about it. MEN!! They can be so stupid. And mine is usually not! Anyway, his temp is back down into the low 100's this morning, so maybe he'll be okay. Sigh.

By the way-- here is the link to the Gingerbread houses (mini)! http://www.notmartha.org/archives/2...ad-house-that-perches-on-the-rim-of-your-mug/

It has a .pdf that you can download and print out the shapes to make the houses. I printed it out and then since I am a pattern maker for my business I have lots of pattern plastic on hand (Very thick plastic that is easy to cut and is opaque). I traced the pieces onto my pattern plastic and then cut them out and used the plastic to lay on my gingerbread and cut out the pieces. It was really easy. Just tedious work, but easy. The site links you to the gingerbread recipe-- and yes, follow it exactly, even when it says to add pepper!! It was yummy!!! I highly recommend it and it held up well, rolled out easily and baked up perfect every time. We had no breakage on our pieces.

Interesting reaction. She is fine this morning. No one bothered her yet. Of course the blu kote is all over her wing, too, so maybe it looks normal on her comb to them. ;-)

The chicks are mixes. The black ones are golden sebrite/mille fleur duccle and I cant wait to see what they look like as they grow. The others are EE mixes and a welsummer mix in there.
The eggs that marans lay are beautiful. Welsummers also lay beautiful eggs and the ones mine lay are brown with chocolate spots. Some welsummers lay a deep chocolate brown egg and some lay spotted eggs.

My internet has been crawling for days. It is driving me crazy. Yes let me know when and I can meet you and or him again...assuming I don't have something I have to do at that moment.

Congrats on the eggs being alive. That is exactly why I don't candle. No matter how careful I am it seems I will accidentally destroy an egg and it is always one that has a baby in it. I figure as long as they don't start smelling I can wait until time to hatch. Like I said when I am hatching tons and the incubators are full to the hilt that is something I have to do... but it is usually the duck eggs I candle cause they take so much room.

Sunflower, I laughed out loud when I read this because that is exactly what I was thinking. If the norm is 99% for something it seems like you keep getting in the other 1%. I thought I was the one these things happen to but I think you have me beat!

I think you should call the doctor and make him an appointment so he has to go.

Glad it is working.

It looks like I may loose my littlest olandsk roo. I really don't know what to do for him. He just is getting worse. I have the vaporizer on them and duramycin in the water plus giving him shots of tylan. I had to use the baby syringe and clean out his nostrils so he could breath at all. His eyes are swollen shut. Now one of the little girls is doing very poorly as well. Obviously the duramycin isn't doing the trick. I may switch to denaguard today and see if it works better. This really makes me sick.
I have my FF in a bucket but I don't think it will be ready today. Not any action yet. I did just put a package of yeast in there hoping to get some other action going. I hope that doesn't ruin the action of the ACV. I just want to get it going.

I have some ...not laying age yet, but should be by spring. I think Trish has some as well.

Danz I am sorry about the roo. I hope he gets better.
I have FF going as well and it is ready today so I am running a test to see how it goes.
I decided I am no longer candling I will just wait to see if there is a bad smell on an egg and take it out candle to be sure and get rid of it from there. I dont want to drop any more. I see what you were saying now. Thank you for handing the chicks off to mommahen, I hope we can work it out, I want to surprise them.
