Consolidated Kansas

Danz I am glad you are making yourself move around. That is always the best way for me to speed healing.

tomorrow is lockdown. I have my extra bowl of water with a dish rag in it ready for mr to fill it tomorrow. Everything is in place. I candled and the air sac is were it should be, the babies are taking up all but a tiny sliver were I can see them move. Do I lock down tomorrow night or tomorrow morning? Tomorrow is day 18. The eggs are starting to tilt to the pointy end since its getting heavier on that side. Should I go ahead and fill the other bowl with water or wait till I lock down?

I normally add water everyday during those last few days but it you are letting out a lot of moisture when you do that I'd wait until lockdown to add more water. I don't think the time of day matters much really. I figure the longer I turn my eggs the more that is like what the hen does. That's just my thinking.

I have been adding to the smaller bowl everyday but the large bowl with the towel in it has no water yet. I have tubes running to the to keep moisture in. So then maybe I will put them in lockdown tomorrow night.

WichitaKidd, thanks for that link. That is interesting about the acid/base mix neutralizing the odor altogether. I don't live as close to a recycle facility as you do but there is one not far from me - I am all set for this year but next year I might consider trying that for the winter and see how we do. Getting it all chopped up for us would make it even easier to use than the way they were doing it in that video.

Are you getting excited about getting chicks again in a couple of months?

I was by our tree-cycle drop a few days ago. There was a huge pile that the city had already chopped up along with about 8-12 'new' trees that had recently been dropped off. Even if I had to chop it up by hand, like in the video, it would be good mental therapy. Besides the price is right & I can take as much as I want.

Definitely anxious for my new chicks to arrive. March 5th can't come soon enough some days.

Meant to ask if that was Betty in the background of your latest photos of Ned? Kind of looked like her anyway. If it is, my she's getting big. I passed on getting more BLRWs this time around mostly because the cost of them from the hatchery tripled over last year (literally). Got some WPRs instead to try this time. Still like having a mixed flock.

Oh I got my chicks just now. I got 12 of my babies that hatched. These are extra special because they are the first chicks from my hens. They are perfect. Mommahen took great care of them and I couldnt be happier. The polish I didnt get a good look at because it was dark. I did notice that the roo has crooked toes and the feet felt very rough and thick. could he have leg mites or is this from him living on concrete maybe? I will take pics tomorrow. His tail is gone too, I took a quick peek and it looked irratated and there was alittle blood here and there. Do you know about that? I can get him healthy I just want to see if you knew any history on it.

Hawkeye & Danz, I hope you both feel better soon!

My little SFH that I got from Eileen is starting to fit in fine with the group, I'm so pleased with her. She stopped hiding & is now pushing her way into the group to get to the food. The two little Barred Rock pullets have just been more aggressive from the beginning, it's just their breed I think to be more forward & a little more bossy, but that's OK with my crowd. The strongest survive is how it just has to be pretty much here. I am starting to get some really nice big eggs from the leghorns now, so that makes me very happy too. Yes, they are kind of flighty birds, they don't like for me to get too close to them, but as long as they lay good I don't mind. I do have more friendly birds that aren't so flighty like my Speckled Sussex & the Orpingtons that let me come up to them & then I have my SFH that are really friendly too & I love my Salmon Faverolles. I miss having them in the grow-out coop now because they can't talk to me so much, but hopefully soon they will be in their own pen in the new coop.

I forgot to tell you all about taking the scraps to the guineas & peafowl this morning. I made a stew last night in the slow cooker, so I had peelings from the veggies. I decided to save them & give them to the guineas & peas today. I took them out & spread them out on the ground in the area where I feed them every day, then I stood at the door & watched. It was the funniest thing ever, the two peafowl & several guineas got in a line & circled around the food, looking at it like it was something really strange. Then finally the female pea pecked at a piece of food & decided it was edible & that convinced the guineas it was OK to eat. When I came back later they had cleaned it all up. Those birds just crack me up they're so funny!

Yep, that was Betty! I didn't realize she had grown but she is certainly a little fluff ball - they say orpingtons are fluff butts but Betty could take on an orpington any day

Are these the birds from up at K-State? If they offer some again this year I think I might get some. I wanted to last year but it was such a busy time with the move that I couldn't make it work.

I have three sons of Cyrus and they are about to become two. I had decided a long time ago to keep one (they are brooder raised and as such have always been super friendly and personable) but didn't know which one, and in the end decided to wait until they are mature and then decide based on their qualities as a roo, rather than my personal feelings towards them. The one who was the ugliest as a chick is an Olive Egger and the first to hatch. As he has matured, he has actually grown into his looks and now is quite a good-looking guy. So far he is practically deferential towards me. The second was the last to hatch and the only one I helped. He hatched a day after the others and on DD's birthday so although he is not a looker, she has always said we should keep him. He had a cute, curious personality as a chick but as he has matured, he has become a little stand-offish and not so personable. That combined with his lack of looks reduces his eligibility as a candidate. The third is gorgeous. Barnyard mutt maybe, but he has wonderful feathering and enormous big, dark eyes, so is the one I hoped would work out to be a keeper. Nope. He came at me yesterday and it could have been Cyrus. So I'm naming him Stew and his days are numbered.

I am so glad I haven't had to deal with mean roosters!!! Knock on wood! I do have one roo I need to rehome. I don't want to butcher him because he is gorgeous. He is half Phoenix and half salmon favorelle. He has the favorelle colors but the saddle, hackle and tail feathers of a pheonix. He was broody raised so he isn't real tame. I am keeping him in a cage to tame him down.He would make an awesome guard rooster for some hens. He had his own little harem before I caged him. I would let someone have him as a flock guardian if they come get him. I can't deliver him right now since my car is totalled and money is tight. Send me a PM if you can use him.

I have way too many roos. I will be eating some and finding new homes for the ones who will be good breeders. I am also hatching and going to sell the chicks. Need to bring in alittle cash somehow
