Consolidated Kansas

Hi , thought i would introduce myself.. i am jeannie.. i live 60 miles straight east of wichita. i have started raising silkies, lavendar orpingtons , and americanas. i also have a few mutt chickens who arent laying right now. i started hatching eggs last summer from some well known breeders and i think i have some beautiful chickens.. well i am really not sure but of course i love them. i am trying to study all the good traits they are suppose to have and my daughter in law has been documenting their growth and progress. right now i am hatching some silkies from catdance and lavendar orpingtons from the Hink-JC lines.. hopefully they will hatch and turn out well. Looking forward to reading all about everyone here on this thread and maybe even meeting some of you in the future..

Glad to have you join us. Love silkies and orps - you've made some good choices.

Hey,another Kansan here. I live a few hours NW of Wichita.
Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

We have Rhode Island Reds.

How many birds do you have and how long have you been keeping them?

I got stopped for speeding. Man I was sweating bullets. And of course I haven't put my insurance card in my old car I am driving since I totalled the other one. I guess he went and did a record check and figured out I haven't got a driving record and that I was telling the truth about totalling the car recently, so he didn't write me a ticket. I had my check book out and was ready to sign the line that said I pled guilty. Whoo! What a break!!! I was just thinking about other things and didn't realize how fast I was going until I saw him. I just pulled over and waited for him. I knew he was going to stop me. He had to turn around so I was just waiting for him.
I think I need to say an extra prayer of thanks!
Congrats on getting out of a ticket. I read awhile back that cops appreciate someone who doesn't make excuses and just tells the truth. The people who argue about the radar gun must not be working or their speedometer is out end up getting tickets. The people who say "omg, I just wasn't paying attention - I'm so sorry" - they are far more lenient. They had an anecdote about the cop who pulled over a guy for speeding and the guy kind of dreamily said "I've just been on the best date of my life - write the ticket for however much you like - it was worth it", and he was beaming so broadly the cop told him to take it easy and let him off with a warning.

Also, don't worry about not having the insurance card on you. As long as you are in state, they can look it up in their system that your insurance is current. It is only a problem if you are out of state.

This should be easy. Based on my weeks of experience, here's what I think they are.

Tiger Head bantam

Albanian Vampire Bantam - ghost variety

Weekend in Jamaica Sil-Co-Cha-Ban-Erama

Old English Top Hat bantam - Earl Grey variety

Wookie-Poo Chewbacka Cochin bantam

Golden Bandit bantam

Here are a few of the different chicks. The white one and the bottom one I have several of. They are all bantam any guesses?

Pretty sure I have them all right.

OK. Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing. Have fun trying to figure them all out.

How nice that all the kids still get a ribbon. I am sure some families can't afford to buy nicer birds and maybe all they have are mutts running around to take to the fair.

Hawkeye- Have you thought about having your son "demo" how a showmanship works? I would have been terrified as a kid to go up in front of a judge without knowing what was going to happen but maybe if you did a little skit for the kids they would realize that it isn't so scary and that nobody is going to point them on the spot or grill them?
Darn, maybe its like us eating too much candy. Can't help ourselves but regret it later!!
Oh yes, this is exactly what I had planned! I'm going to have Colter come with me to be my "demonstration kid". I want him to wear his white Lab coat and look like he's ready for showmanship, so the kids can SEE what things should look like. I'm going to bring a bird or two with me so that I can show them in the cage how to put them in and out and how to pose them at attention once they are in the cage. I agree, once the kids see this and it doesn't look so scary and I'm going to do a LOT of reassurance that they CAN do this and it's fun and easy. I don't want to scare them and make it seem harder than it is. We'll just go over basics and hopefully get them feeling confident.

WELCOME to the Kansas thread! Glad to have you here! Sounds like you are having a lot of fun! Catdance has great silkies. I actually don't have any of hers, but I appreciate them! :) My thought was that if everyone owns Catdance, then we'll all be inbreeding in a couple of years! LOL But they are gorgeous and a great start to just jump right into! Karen is really neat. Are you a member of the ASBC yet? If not, check into that so that if you show, you can earn points for the club.

WELCOME to the thread!!! Also glad to have you here! RIR's are beautiful birds! :)

maidenwolf---so excited for you! Cant wait to see babies.

Jeanniec and Kansas Chick--Glad you are here :)

Question for the 4 H supporters on here, is there a particular breed that kids tend to go for as far as their fair birds?
We do 4-H and there seem to be a few that kids like, but ALL birds are good! Especially if you stay away from the popular ones, you can win for your class. Kids love the Call Ducks!! We see lots of call ducks! And they are adorable. I see a lot of cochins, Polish, Houdan, etc... the crested breeds. Not too many people are doing the Modern Game, and I think it's a shame, because those are super neat birds!!! Old English are popular with the kids, as well as the bantam Wyandottes. Otherwise, you see a mix of everything. I love seeing the Cornish game birds there-- they are beautiful. (to me, they look like meat on a stick-- YUM!!) LOL I'm sick like that, though. I wanted to buy a pair at the last show so I could breed them just for the tasty meat. My DH threw a fit when he thought I was serious. (I really WAS serious, but laughed it off when he said no new chicken breeds!!)

I programmed his computer so his email would direct load on to his computer and he wouldn't have to go to the website to read email.

That is so awesome of you to write out the instructions for your Dad to follow so he can get on email. I think he will like being connected and being able to talk any time and it will kill time if he's bored. What an amazing officer to let you off for speeding! The fact that you pulled over before he had a chance to turn around, I'm sure that impressed him before he even got up to your window.

LOVE all of your chicks, but this grey one is my favorite!!! It looks kind of like a modern game bird! So cute!! LONG legs!! Maybe it will be a bantam game bird of some kind.

Seriously, that was HYSTERICAL!!!! I laughed so hard!! I love the Tiger bantam.

Yesterday we got our first chicken eggs! I hadn't checked for a week, so I think it was my Black Sex Link that laid them because there were 5 brown ones. My daughter had a sleepover last night, so a couple of the girls were so excited to do chicken and duck chores this morning.
