Consolidated Kansas

Tweety I am so sorry about the hen and about you being so down. I was thinking about you the other day. All my positive vibes and healing energy are on the way.

Danz- besides bringing in the few birds from you I am very strict about bringing in big birds. All it takes is that one virus to wipe out your whole flock. That scares me. My birds are my pets as well as business partners and food providers so it is very important they are healthy. Anytime someone gets the tiniest of a sneeze I am on it and monitoring and giving teas. I cant imagine losing everyone. I am not worried about bringing in birds from you and a couple of other people from this thread becasuse I know you care for the health of your flock. I do keep them seperate for awhile. I have had times I just put them right in and paid for it with the lice.. I knew better and learned from it.

Josie, I've been having heart to heart talks with the goosies on a daily basis. I told them how much work the FF was going to be for me and how much it would mean to me to have babies this year. They yelled their approval and ran around acting silly so I figured that meant that they would try. In goose language I was sure that meant they were in agreement!
big_smile.png

Let me know how it goes.

If not I am sure I will be up to my eyeballs in eggs here in a few short weeks. I am planning on selling eggs and just letting the girls set a bunch to hatch. I had such bad luck incubator hatching last year that it isn't worth it and I would rather let the geese raise them. I am only going to let them intentionally set from two trios of geese. I am going to put the lavender gander over two gray geese for blue and the smooth saddleback over one saddleback goose and one white split to saddleback for grey/blue saddleback babies. I am hoping the move doesn't stress them too badly.

I woudn't feed with non-medicated feed myself. Health conscious people want a guarantee of no chemicals in their birds and want them fed non GMO feed and no antibiotics. It seems dumb to me to take the chance of getting cocci. Plus once you have an outbreak on your property you can count on having more outbreaks. Short of vaccinating every chick on the place I'd rather feed medicated feed and keep Corid on hand for an emergency. I have never had a case of Cocci at least that I know of. I'd like to keep it that way. Ditto to this.
Josie I have mille fleurs d'uccle. They are very pretty. In this case the hens are the pretty ones instead of the roosters. You'll have to stop some time and see them before you make the move. I love my mille cochin hens. I probably shouldn't or I will come home with d'uccles!!! DH would be less than impressed!
D'uccles and cochins are different bantam breeds. I have a small project pen of mille fleur cochins. They are purebred cochins that are working on the mille fleur color pattern. Breeders have been working on the color by using mottled, buff columbian and a few other colors of cochins in combination.
Josie do you have pictures of the one that need homes whats the deference in the duccles and Cochin's

Josie, Toby was beautiful when I got him but gosh, he just keeps getting prettier. He still would prefer not to be handled but sometimes I just pet him just to. He’s a nice boy. Sounds like he needs some corporal cuddling! I pick my roos up all the time and carry them around, eventually they learn to tolerate me and I have one cochin boy who goes to sleep!

So in chickens do they always have cocci present in their systems and if they get sick that means that their normal flora became off balance? Like in people, we always have strep or staph or even yeast everywhere but it doesn’t matter unless they take over. I don’t want to do anything to hurt my chicks or chickens, but I don’t want to follow blindly either just because it’s what everyone is doing. I want to know I’m doing the right thing.

I have a beautiful Dan Powell Brahma rooster I have got to take a picture of. I bought mixed color eggs just of hatching one of these. I do wish I had a female to breed back to. I won't be able to get another cause he sold all his stock and quit breeding. It is a blue laced gold. It is the most beautiful bird I think I have ever seen and it is still young. Hopefully I'll get a picture soon to post.
Ohhhhhh!!!!! Can't wait.

Love my laced brahmas, they are super sweet. My poor buff laced boy was running around with a serama mix roo hanging off his tail the other day! Such a wimp!

Yes we are supposed to have unlimited internet. We have called and called problems and have always gotten the runaround. This is the first person who has honestly answered my questions and explained how they do things. I should be ticked but I was just glad to have someone tell me the truth and explain why it worked that way. We had the internet with Altel and it was great. When it went to Verizon just like our phone service it went to crap. We got the phones working after spending a chunk of money on a booster. DH purchased a new device on their suggestion that is just as bad as the first one. We've had it at least a year. Supposedly this won't happen with the new device. I need to make sure not to go over my limit with the new device when it gets here. The guy looked up our records and only one time (which was December when I was Christmas shopping) have we ever gone over that amount. They just charge $10 for the next G of use. Since the new device is $10 a month cheaper anyway we should be golden even if I do use a little more.
I shut down BYC and it logged me back in so I think I'm okay. It was so long ago when I first got on BYC I just can't remember my password. I used to use the same password for everything but for internet security and different sites needing different things I can't remember what is what I have a record of most of them but BYC and Facebook which I use the most I have no clue.
I've been scrubbing down my kitchen cabinets. Man they get dirty. I guess it is one of those many things I just don't notice. I've never had white cabinets before and I love how they brighten up the room but they sure do show the dirt more than natural wood. I have a love hate relationship with white cabinets as well. They do get dirty really fast and it shows a lot!

If you're talking about dividing up a batch and feeding one medicated and the other non, I don't think you'll see any difference. At least not at first. But if your brooder is contaminated with adult poo-- or you haven't washed your hands, etc... then you could kill your babies. But still, cocci isn't one of those things that is going to pop up every single time. It may be just the ONE time you had expensive chicks in there and the other batches when thru fine. Anyway, I know a lot of people get along okay with out the medicated starter, but I can't see myself taking that chance.

I bet Josie could explain better on how it works! I've read about it, but all I'd be doing is just quoting something I read. As far as I know, it's a living organism that is in the ground and then can be ingested by adults and passed in poop-- but they should be immune to it by that age. Then along comes young birds or chicks, and they don't fare so well. If you ever get it, it doesn't go away. Okay-- now Josie needs to correct all of my "internet knowledge"! LOL
Hawkeye, I think you are on the right track and this is good advice. Here is a good article on coccidia. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/200800.htm

Coccidia are a nasty protozoal parasite that lives in the environment. There are many different species and they are everywhere. Even practicing good hygiene when caring for birds is not enough to prevent their travels. The other major problem is they are HIGHLY resilient, meaning you can do a lot of cleaning and they can still be hiding somewhere just waiting. The other pickle is that they need very specific conditions to become infectious so they can lie in wait for a long time before they spring to life. Kind of like flea eggs, but worse!

It is important to recognize that Amprolium, the drug found in "medicated" chick starter is a static drug. It does not affect the bird itself and chick starter is created with all the necessary levels of nutrients a growing bird needs to survive and thrive. If you have a thiamine deficiency it is more likely that the chick starter is deficient due to a manufacturing error which is not impossible and why it is important to keep an eye on feed recalls. SO, back to static drugs. A drug like Amprolium works by preventing coccidia from absorbing thiamine which is imperative to its survival in the body and replication. So a bird can ingest a small amount of coccidia and if there is no amprolium in the body it divides rapidly and quickly kills the bird but if there is a static drug present it prevents the population boom that can be deathly and the bird is able to fight off the small amount of coccidia it is exposed to and survive. (and develop immunity)

I have known of several breeders that have lost whole brooders of chicks rapidly to coccidia and this can even still happen with medicated chick starter. It is less likely to happen if you have a static drug present in the feed for the first 8 weeks of life and one of those situations where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in my opinion.
Hey all! I know I haven't jumped on lately, but my health hasn't changed and I'm still back and forth between home and the hospital.

Sad day here in my coop. Goldie, the Golden Laced Orp was found dead this afternoon. I checked her out to see if I could figure out what happened to her (she was just laying in the middle of run) and there were thousands of mites covering her. They were red and clumped in bunches underneath the feathers. I caught all of the other birds and checked them, but I couldn't see any mites on them, although I know they are probably there if Goldie had them, then so do the other birds. Do you think they would have gathered on her more because she was dead, or could they have caused her death? I never noticed anything wrong with her before, she was just as chickeny as all the others are right now.

I guess this weekend I'm going to have to completely clean out the whole run and dust everything with sven. Cry... my first chicken loss.
hit.gif
Oh no!!! You poor thing, I am so sorry!!!! Those big fluffy orps are great hosts for mites and it can be so hard to see them past all the fluff.

Trish I just have too many birds to feed for a small batches, even using the bins isn't enough feed. DH said I should try using a hoe to mix the feed. I'm using between 75 to 100 pounds of dry feed a day so that is a lot to keep fermented. I also want to maintain 3 different batches. One with chick starter, one with regular feed and one with the brewers yeast for the game fowl. It would be easier if I could keep it all the same.
My birds act the same as yours. They literally jump on my hands and arms trying to get to the feed bowl. I even got bitten by one chick in the brooder yesterday. I guess she was over anxious. I have even put extra in there so there was a little left and they still act like they are starved. I think they just really love the stuff.
Today I am going to try some on the geese. My bubbly mix should be ready for them. I sure hope they like it cause it should be awesome healthy for them. I already know the peafowl will eat it. The turkeys seem to take a while to get used to eating something different so it may take them a few days.
I guess I am going to have to get some more plastic feed pans. I have a couple of galvanized feeders I will have to replace if I feed every bird FF. The one thing I did notice is the extreme growth rate the birds made after even a couple weeks being fed the FF. It is amazing. They went from little chicks to good sized birds very quickly. Sharol and Trish I had satellite internet before I had this stuff. I hated it. If there were sun spots we had no internet. If there was rain we had no internet. If there was snow we had no internet, etc etc. It honestly stunk. I didn't understand it cause the receiver is sitting right next to my dish receiver and the whether has to be pretty bad to knock it out. I gave it about 2 and half years and couldn't wait to replace it. My sister and some other friends had it as well and felt the same. I won't be doing that again.
I have high hopes this new device does the trick.
Yeah I can see where it would be a problem for you with so many birds. I guess the hoe could work to mix, I found this little shovel thing in the housewares department, it's supposed to be a spatula, but it's a strange one with sides. Anyway, it works pretty well for shoveling the stuff into my measuring cup. I have been tinkering with amounts on this FF to see what I need to feed each group of birds & then I'll write it all down. It's hard to tell sometimes with my laying hens because they act like they're starving to death when I know they can't be. If the birds clean the feeder & act satisfied then I figure they got enough to eat. I'm using the plastic guttering I got for feeders & it's working great for that. Even without the ends closed in the feed doesn't go anywhere since it's wet. I think I kind of like the ends being open anyway because a bird can get at each end & eat too. I have different lengths depending on how many birds are in that pen. I just drilled a few holes at the top back & wired them at intervals to the fence in the pen & sat a few bricks under them for support. It seems to work all right that way.

Hawkeye, so the Pixius really works out well for you then? We had looked at that because there have been signs around here that it's available, but I wasn't sure because my friend tried it when she lived outside Derby & she didn't like it that well. What we have is working right now, so I guess we'll stick with it until we find something better. The tower for us is less than a mile away, so as long as we can get service & it's pretty reliable it's fine. The streaming isn't that big of a deal, we had just wanted to try it, but I have Netflix, so we can still get the movies we want, maybe not instantly, but we don't watch that many anyway. I have the 3 at a time deal on Netflix & that's enough most of the time for us.

Oh I forgot to say Tweety I'm sorry you're still not doing well, I hope they can do something to at least make you more comfortable if not find a way to fix the problem.

Hawkeye I totally agree with the vaccination concept.

As far as chickens go I've been pretty much a stickler about not bringing in anything but chicks here. I had one rooster and a couple hens brought in over the years and made sure they were treated and quarantined before letting them near any others. One thing I have to say is a total win win is keeping your chickens as healthy as possible. It makes them resistant to getting things like Cocci.
I believe in feeding medicated feed. I guess I formed my opinion by watching my daughter's chickens. She has a small flock that changes a lot but usually around 20 birds, not counting the babies. She never feeds medicated feed. She has had several outbreaks of cocci. She had chicks that got it that she treated with corid and saved. The next batch of chicks she got went into the same pen where the original chicks have been. Within 24 hours they were sick and dying. The cocci was in the ground obviously. It just doesn't seem worth the risk to infect your chicks and your houses or ground. Amprolium is a drug that works almost exclusively against coccidiosis. The low dose in chick starter isn't enough to suppress their immune systems but helps prevent the infection taking hold. The other option is to vaccinate against it but I've read that isn't always effective either. I definitely am one who is against using antibiotics if they aren't necessary but in this case I think it is pretty vital.
If you don't feed medicated feed and a chick gets cocci and survives with treatment, my feelings are that the sickness weakens the chicken and possibly shortens their life or vitality in the whole grand scheme of things. Strictly my opinion.
Unbelievable as it is the little chick that eviscerated itself is still alive. The bleeding stopped. When I last checked on it last night her eyes were closed and it was acting listless. This morning it is healthy acting and running around. I haven't put it with the other chicks cause I am sure they would pick at it. I am trying not to get my hopes up because I know that it will probably get an internal infection and die. I am just amazed that it is still alive today. If it makes it a while longer I'll try the paper tape on it like I did with the unabsorbed yolk a while back. Wouldn't that be awesome if it lived?
Mammahen, using my old sourdough starter you had to add like 1 tsp sugar each time you fed your starter. I'll bet the potato flakes would be good. I love potato bread. It must be similar to that?? You are so sweet. I sure wish I could find a dairy closer. I'd certainly be glad to buy any milk you want to bring me.
I don't drink milk, I am allergic to it but I get along with it in small doses like in butter and cheese. I just can't breath very well if I get too much of it. I love ice cream but it really plugs me up bad. Some times I just make it a point to go outside what my body prefers!!! And of course I cook with milk. It seems like it doesn't bother me much if it is cooked. DH will drink it though. I just want it for all the wonderful things I can do with whole milk.
I took a picture of this little blue laced gold brahma cockerel but for some reason my computer won't read my SD card now. I have no idea why. Dang it! Dan Powell sent my email address to the person who he sold his brahmas too but they never contacted me as he requested. Out of respect for their privacy he wouldn't give me their information directly. I know of one guy who had some of his offspring but his eggs were crap. He had no idea how to feed for egg quality and his shells were porous and therefore not worth hatching. He has since quit raising chickens at all. He won't give me information who he sold them to because he got offended when I tried to explain to him what was wrong with his eggs. Just because someone can afford to buy great chickens doesn't mean they have a clue about caring for them.
I've told my vaccination story here before, so yep, we're on the same page. ;)
I know why you get all plugged up with milk. Milk (and other dairy) can cause excessive mucus anywhere it's produced-- respiratory, stomach, etc. It can be from an allergy, but I think it just happens in some people. Milk has a high fat content that thickens up existing mucus, for all people. Anyway, it won't effect everyone-- I drink a ton of milk during the day and I don't think I experience that at all. But if I did that while having a sinus infection-- that would probably be a really bad idea since it will still thicken up what I have.

I remember you mentioning that story before of the guy who was producing poor quality eggs that were very pourous. I can imagine he wasn't happy with the feedback! LOL Most people don't take it so well when anything they are doing is scrutinized. I probably wouldn't have liked it either. No one likes bad feedback. But it was an easy fix, so you'd think it might be a bit easier for him to take.

Hawkeye when I was a kid milk always made me sick so even though my parents didn't like it, I stopped drinking it. I wouldn't even drink it as a baby. I was on calcium pills most of my childhood. They were chocolate flavored and delicious even though they were prescription. One of those pleasant memories. I had severe skeletal pain when I was growing and I would literally cry in my sleep all the time because I hurt so bad all over.
Anyway then in my early 20's I was literally starving to death because I was so sick and couldn't digest food at all. Probably a lot like Tweety is feeling right now. I was down to 102 pounds and at 5'7" I looked like over warmed death. Even at that, the internalist I was going to said I was still loosing about 12 pounds a year. I had 0% body fat so I was loosing muscle in place of fat. They did multiple tests and one of those tests concluded I was actually allergic to milk. I am also lactose intolerant, but allergic to the milk as well. I have many food allergies but that is the worst.
When I stopped eating dairy products for a few years as well as taking medications to fight the other side effects I got much better. Of course later I couldn't stand to miss out on some good things, so I started back in again consuming some things. It causes a number of problems other than congestion. Some I don't want to post on here if you understand.
I never have been normal... in any way shape or form!
They never tried anything like goats milk and I don't think there were vegetable protein substitutes back then. So I honestly don't know if it is just cows milk or not.
I got a bunch of trash out and the wind is calm enough I can burn. It was nice to get some trash out of here. Now I need to get back to cleaning again.
Thanks Josie for posting that stuff. As always you are a wealth of information.

We didn't like Sumner Com for other reasons as well. They would always go out after a storm. They are pretty fast to fix stuff, but it got annoying. Also, their speeds are just slower than what Pixus can now offer. They SAID they were giving us higher speeds (we were paying for it) and my DH concluded on our end (with testing) that we were not. It caused a lot of stranded downloads/uploads and just lots of problems. I wouldn't say that Pixus is the best-- I think being on a landline cable would be the best, but this is better than what we had.

Oh no, I wasn't saying that a milk allergy is the result of thickened mucus. Just saying milk causes it. If you have a milk allergy- you can't have any mamal milk as far as I know. We had that problem with my oldest. Soooo many people told us to try goat milk, etc... but it didn't make any difference. Milk is milk unless it really isn't milk-- like made from plants. Soy didn't even work, but Rice milk did. Wow, sounds awful whatever it was you had! My neighbors kids is gluten intollerant and he is very severe. He's really, really small. His body just doesn't digest the way it should and does not pick up the nutrients out of food because the gluten blocked it?? Well, I don't even remember how it works. Okay, so the consequences are that his body quit making growth hormone, and he was very skinny. So now, he's on growth hormone every week, and they eat entirely different and he's growing and seems like he's not all skin and bones. Crazy what food can do to us.

You all have been very busy!

Danz sounds like you've made some good progress on the trailer. I'm thinking very seriously about getting started cleaning out the uninsulated part of the shop to put my birds in there. I have too many birds right now but hate to part with any. LOL! I will, though, especially now that I'm no longer ill and neither are the kids or DH.

Tweety, I'm so sorry to hear you're still struggling with your health. It has been such a long time.

WichitaKidd, I'm so excited for your new chick order! Loved your breed name guesses -- 2 funny.

Hawkeye, I hope the job issue for your DH gets solved soon. It's so nerve-wracking having that hanging over your head. My DH has been assured of job stability so that's great. He and his group are putting in lots of hours now that they've lost half their group. While it is occasionally wearing, we're grateful to have a job. I really hope something opens up for your DH.

Checoukan, I'm so happy for you -- a real barn would be too awesome!

maidenwolf, Your chicks are adorable!

Welcome to all the newcomers!

I'm buying some Buff Sussex hatching eggs in a couple weeks, so I'm really psyched about that Crossing them with the Speckled Sussex should yield Mille Fleur Sussex and I'm really excited about having those to work into the Aloha project. I've got lots of chicks growing out but managed to get quite a few EE's out of the deal. One of my Aloha roos had puffy cheeks and that trait sure showed up in his chicks. His great spots didn't get passed on so back to the drawing board. Of course, his chicks still carry spotting so it's not a total loss. I do have several spotty Alohas growing out so it's all good. The German New Hamps are doing really well and the black Ameraucanas I got from Trish are doing great. I have four hens and one roo. I have two Wellies who finally started to lay and their eggs are really big and really pretty! I really like those Wellies and have a few more pullets growing out. My Swedish Flowers are very, very close to laying. The boys are acting crazy and I'll have to choose who stays and who goes really soon. I love those birds, though, great little personalities and so pretty. The crests make me smile.

I hope everyone gets healthy. So sorry to hear you're so sick, Trish. Hope it doesn't last long!

I had my phoenix hen get gashed open. Under her wing is split open. It looks like an older injury because it is not bleeding and is dry. It looks like it should have been sewn shut because it is stretched open and the skin is loose around the site like the tissue is dead. It has that rawhide smell to it tellin gme it is dead and infected. There is a tiny amount of clear fluid under the skin, no oozing or leaking, it is not red or hot. I put antibiotic ointment on the site. She is limping alittle bit and just tries to stay on roost in the run. any ideas or suggestions? What happened? Could a roo have done this since a couple of them fight over who mates with who? Or is this something different?

Yes roos can and do rip open the sides on a hen quite often. I've had that happen several times and usually have to quarantine the hen so they roosters don't keep ripping her up. They seem to have favorite hens and those are the ones that get ripped.
Did your son out grow his milk allergies Hawkeye? I still get ill if I eat too much with milk in it but nothing like I used to. I love cheese. I just have to be very careful about eating it. I also love real butter and eat it even if it means spending lots of time in the bathroom later. My brother is gluten intolerant. It got so bad for him it caused an ulcerated colon. He can't even scrape the top off of pizza, or eat the top part of a pie or something that has been near flour or he will be very sick for days. I was just tested for celiac disease a few months ago because it has been found to be inherited. And it can start at any time of life even if you haven't had any problems with it in years past. My test was negative, but it was only the test that tells you if your blood is deficient because of it. There are other more conclusive tests.
I haven't done what I intended to today. It was so warm out I got busy outside. I got a ramp made for the camper so the birds can get in and out. I need to figure out why this SD card isn't reading so I can show you guys what a ghetto looking thing it is. I did loose one white orpington. I have no idea why unless she failed to start eating and drinking after the move. Makes me sad. I had some cheap birds I would rather have lost if I were going to loose some. Anyway it is warm enough a few of the birds found their way outside into the pen. The more they go outside the longer I can wait to clean it out in there again.
I got sidetracked in the brooder house and ended up shoveling the whole thing out. I was really short on shavings so I just got them down in the four pens that have birds in them That left the other two outside bins empty. So I sprayed oxine in therm and shook down some sevin to make sure it was ready to go when I put more chicks out there. Those outside pens get wet a lot faster than the others. I don't know if they walls sweat or not. But for now maybe they'll dry out.
Now I have two huge containers of old shavings and poo that need to go to the garden. I can't lift them.
It felt so good to be able to work outside without being bundled up for winter. It's supposed to get cold again tomorrow so I am glad I got that stuff done.
Karen this was just a little camper trailer...not the big one. I still haven't made progress on it yet.
I wish I was closer I would so be working on your shop for you. I don't know why I can work so much better on other people's projects than my own!
I have missed your updates so much. I hope you can post some pictures soon of your projects.
I am loving the Swedish flower hens. They are such sweet birds. I only have one girl laying I think. It's the one that was supposed to be an olandsk and got sent by mistake. The others should be starting soon though.
I also got my lavender and lemon cuckoo orpingtons divided while I was out there. I don't think they were happy with me. But since I am getting some eggs regularly I figured I'd better get it done. I hatched 3 chicks from them yesterday and they all look lemon. No lavender babies yet.
