I think you are doing all you can. Just be sure if you separate her she continues to eat and drink. I guess if you sew, you could make her a chicken apron really fast. I think some roosters need to learn some manners.

Karen this was just a little camper trailer...not the big one. I still haven't made progress on it yet.
I wish I was closer I would so be working on your shop for you. I don't know why I can work so much better on other people's projects than my own!
I have missed your updates so much. I hope you can post some pictures soon of your projects.
I am loving the Swedish flower hens. They are such sweet birds. I only have one girl laying I think. It's the one that was supposed to be an olandsk and got sent by mistake. The others should be starting soon though.
I also got my lavender and lemon cuckoo orpingtons divided while I was out there. I don't think they were happy with me. But since I am getting some eggs regularly I figured I'd better get it done. I hatched 3 chicks from them yesterday and they all look lemon. No lavender babies yet.

Oh! Still, it feels great to get something done, doesn't it? DD is out taking some pics for me as I type so I'll see if we get anything worth posting. How many lemon cuckoos do you have? I've only got two lav orps left, one hen and one roo. They are really pretty birds and huge! The fams all home -- getting crazy around here

. If I get any good pics, I'll post later. Chopper is still doing great and Lucy, the little black Serama and Princess, the white Serama are doing fine, too.

JosieChick, I wanted to let you know that Bertram, the little Serama roo, is doing great! He's king of all bantam hens and his little crow just cracks me up. He's a nice little roo.

Here are some updated pics.

This is my favorite Swedish Flower.

Here are Bertram and Princess hanging out together. Princess really is a white bird but she's been dust bathing in wood ashes.

I have several EE's of this color. Interesting. It's more of a chocolate color than the pic shows, it's really pretty.

These are mostly German New Hamps that are growing out hanging out with a Swedish in the back and a Wellie cockerel on the right.

Ok I am going to make an apron for her. some roosters do need to learn manners. The problem I have is I have 3 dominant roosters. Everytime one tries to mate the 2 others rush over to stop it so they can jump on. I dont know how to stop this. Is sending one away my only option?

These are the youngest group of birds I have still in grow out pens. These are all Alohas crossed with New Hamp, Speckled Sussex, or Buff Orp. There are also 5 crossed with EE's. It's an interesting group. The little one center front is an unusual color/pattern. I really like her. You can see the New Hamp influence in the one to the right of her. Even though these are solid color, they carry spots so when they are breeded back to Alohas I should get some really nice size and color going.

Here's a better pic of the spotty birds. And, yay! No puffy cheeks.

There are a couple of those chocolate colored EE crosses in the back of this pic and it shows a nice Aloha hen in the center.

I have high hopes for the cockerel headed into the house. He looks to be a good size, good color and yellow legs.

I have some really exciting prospects so I'm excited to see how this year's offspring look.

very beautiful birds love the different colored ones

Hi Karen!!!
frow.gif
Glad to hear you are doing well! Glad you found some buff sussex to work with too!
You all have been very busy!

I'm buying some Buff Sussex hatching eggs in a couple weeks, so I'm really psyched about that Crossing them with the Speckled Sussex should yield Mille Fleur Sussex and I'm really excited about having those to work into the Aloha project. I've got lots of chicks growing out but managed to get quite a few EE's out of the deal. One of my Aloha roos had puffy cheeks and that trait sure showed up in his chicks. His great spots didn't get passed on so back to the drawing board. Of course, his chicks still carry spotting so it's not a total loss. I do have several spotty Alohas growing out so it's all good. The German New Hamps are doing really well and the black Ameraucanas I got from Trish are doing great. I have four hens and one roo. I have two Wellies who finally started to lay and their eggs are really big and really pretty! I really like those Wellies and have a few more pullets growing out. My Swedish Flowers are very, very close to laying. The boys are acting crazy and I'll have to choose who stays and who goes really soon. I love those birds, though, great little personalities and so pretty. The crests make me smile.

I hope everyone gets healthy. So sorry to hear you're so sick, Trish. Hope it doesn't last long!
Danz- thank you. I will seerate her. What can I do? Will she heal up on her own? I just worry because it is split open.
It will heal if you keep her separate and quiet. I would definitely put her on some antibiotics, a sulfa based liquid would be a good broad spectrum until it is really dried up. Can you get a pic of the wound? You may need to debride it so it can heal properly. If the edges of the wound are dead it can't heal well or hardly at all by what is called "second intention." When a wound gets sutured together it gives the body a head start on healing by preventing a large area of tissue being exposed to bacteria and the body can close the gap quickly. If it is a wide open wound it needs to have fresh edges of healthy tissue and the body will tell the wound to close by growing tissue from each side to meet in the middle. If the edges or parts of the wound are necrotic (rotting) the wound can't heal and secondary infection can get bad very quickly. Don't put any kind of ointment or salve on it. This actually damages the cells that are creating fibrous bonds over the wound to protect it from infection and slows healing. Hope you can get a pic.

This is my favorite Swedish Flower. I love her crest! She looks like a lady going to church in a fancy hat!

Bertram is looking good! I like his wing set and color. Princess is filthy!! Hahahaha! She looks like she has dyed herself brown.

I think sending two away is your only option unless you want your hens injured by randy boys. Sorry! My solution for dominant roos is the soup pot. I have a zero tolerance policy for roughing up my girls. A good roo should protect, find food for his girls and lastly he should mate and he should do so politely. If not, its off with his head!

I thought I had another multi....hmmm, maybe I am just losing my mind!

Hawkeye-Keep us posted on your show in March. I live vicariously through your shows right now. Where is this one? I wish my one good black cochin roo hadn't gotten mauled by another roo (who is gone now!) and his head wasn't bald. It is full of pin feathers so it will come back thank heavens! He looked like raw hamburger for a few days, I didn't think he would grow feathers back. Also, I have a couple call ducks to sell but let me know if you have a 4-H kiddo that wants a call and I will wait a bit to list them for sale.

So nice today!!! And now it is quite chilly out. It is nice to have a 50 degree day to get caught up on outdoor chores and I filled two pools for the geese which they had a grand time with! Should have brought my camera out, they are so silly. I walked the fence line with the indoor dogs so they could go for a walk and I turned around once and all four horses were following us too! Silly boys must have been bored. We must have been quite the sight, me, three dogs, two big horses and two minis tromping along out there.

Hawkeye, I hope the job issue for your DH gets solved soon. It's so nerve-wracking having that hanging over your head. My DH has been assured of job stability so that's great. He and his group are putting in lots of hours now that they've lost half their group. While it is occasionally wearing, we're grateful to have a job. I really hope something opens up for your DH.

Thank you! Yeah, it's nerve wracking for sure, but he's in a high demand field and should be able to find another job easily-- especially with his qualifications. It's just not knowing if we find it HERE or we have to move to do it. Wichita is losing industry and it's getting harder to find those high tech jobs. Good luck on your hatching eggs! I am going to buy some eggs from a breeder at the end of Feb/early March and hope I get something good. I just need ONE good bird out of the batch. Hoping for something i can use and get rid of the rest depending on faults. Very interesting about your Aloha project, I love hearing about it and I love the spotted birds!

I had my phoenix hen get gashed open. Under her wing is split open. It looks like an older injury because it is not bleeding and is dry. It looks like it should have been sewn shut because it is stretched open and the skin is loose around the site like the tissue is dead. It has that rawhide smell to it tellin gme it is dead and infected. There is a tiny amount of clear fluid under the skin, no oozing or leaking, it is not red or hot. I put antibiotic ointment on the site. She is limping alittle bit and just tries to stay on roost in the run. any ideas or suggestions? What happened? Could a roo have done this since a couple of them fight over who mates with who? Or is this something different?
Can you pick off some of the yuck scab or cut into it a bit? When I take my horses in for wounds, my vet always goes at it with a sharp razor and cuts off all the skin around the wound and then we pack it with antibiotics and then put vaseline on top to seal. Then of course, I do a round of injection penicillin on them. I would suggest the round of penicilin for sure. I keep a bottle in the fridge for EVERYone! LOL (well, not us humans, but everyone that has fur or feathers)

Yes roos can and do rip open the sides on a hen quite often. I've had that happen several times and usually have to quarantine the hen so they roosters don't keep ripping her up. They seem to have favorite hens and those are the ones that get ripped.
Did your son out grow his milk allergies Hawkeye? I still get ill if I eat too much with milk in it but nothing like I used to. I love cheese. I just have to be very careful about eating it. I also love real butter and eat it even if it means spending lots of time in the bathroom later. My brother is gluten intolerant. It got so bad for him it caused an ulcerated colon. He can't even scrape the top off of pizza, or eat the top part of a pie or something that has been near flour or he will be very sick for days. I was just tested for celiac disease a few months ago because it has been found to be inherited. And it can start at any time of life even if you haven't had any problems with it in years past. My test was negative, but it was only the test that tells you if your blood is deficient because of it. There are other more conclusive tests.
I haven't done what I intended to today. It was so warm out I got busy outside. I got a ramp made for the camper so the birds can get in and out. I need to figure out why this SD card isn't reading so I can show you guys what a ghetto looking thing it is. I did loose one white orpington. I have no idea why unless she failed to start eating and drinking after the move. Makes me sad. I had some cheap birds I would rather have lost if I were going to loose some. Anyway it is warm enough a few of the birds found their way outside into the pen. The more they go outside the longer I can wait to clean it out in there again.
I got sidetracked in the brooder house and ended up shoveling the whole thing out. I was really short on shavings so I just got them down in the four pens that have birds in them That left the other two outside bins empty. So I sprayed oxine in therm and shook down some sevin to make sure it was ready to go when I put more chicks out there. Those outside pens get wet a lot faster than the others. I don't know if they walls sweat or not. But for now maybe they'll dry out.
Now I have two huge containers of old shavings and poo that need to go to the garden. I can't lift them.
It felt so good to be able to work outside without being bundled up for winter. It's supposed to get cold again tomorrow so I am glad I got that stuff done.

He has "sort of" grown out the milk allergy. He can now have limited amounts of the hormone free milk. But he can't eat a bowl of cereal. But it's not so severe that I can't cook with milk, put butter on, etc.. I like the idea of aprons for the backs of the hens! I bought several from a lady on BYC last year for my silkies. LOVE them and I bought sparkly pink ones! LOL I would love to see your work! Who cares if it's ghetto!! If you have it and can use it... might as well!

They have apron patterns online for free. I bought mine for $3 a piece from a lady on BYC. I actually sew for a business and I get to the point where I just don't want to do everything myself! I would pick your favorite rooster and eat the other two. Chicken noodle soup!!! mmmmmm....

GORGEOUS!!! Can't wait to see the spots really fly when you are where you want to be!

I need to double check with my DH if I can do that March show! His layoff is late March and he's been pulling back on the spending! LOL I can't wait until he lines up another job. But I really want to do that Pryor Oklahoma show!! I'll keep your call ducks in mind and mention it at my 4-H workshop. They are popular with the kids. I'm sorry about your roo. I had two boys get in a fight and do the same thing! One of them lost part of his crest!! It's coming back in, but yikes-- it happened to my best show boy that took first place at Nationals. Sigh. of course.
