Consolidated Kansas

Here comes anouther round of weather. We are so wet from the rain, and now the melting sleet. I was out side most of the day trying to get water to run off. It is a mess outside. My big ole dairy goat doe is getting ready to have her kids. I was hoping she would have them this afternoon while it was warm, and sun was shining. But NO GOTTA WAIT TILL DARK!!!.I hope she does not have tripletts, she did last year. Two years ago, I fed 2 bottle calves, and 5 kid goats from her, she is such a good milk goat. I have had several calls for milk, but I tried to hold the breeding back until Feb, and march, so maybe would not be as cold. Didn't work, should have kidded back in December. At least is would have been dry with no snow.

I've about had all I can tolerate of this snow and cold. I swear every day it is like being beaten to go out there and work in that stuff. I didn't get my sunscreen down like I planned. I kept thinking I would go get it taken down after I got done feeding. I had a couple phone calls and just got back in from feeding.
I sure hope this storm moves way north and misses Kansas. Probably not going to happen.
I discovered that DH drove over the top of my plywood and broke it with the tractor. He failed to mention it to me. Grrr! I wish he had just told me. Now I have to spend more money before I can finish my hoop coop. I had two more pieces and tried to get them out to the inside of the hoop coop but dragging the plywood and slipping in the wet snow was like double the effort it would normally take to do it. At least he can't run over the rest of it now.
I was doing some figuring earlier and I really need to eliminate a few more breeds. I would be okay if I didn't have different colors to separate in some breeds. Of course that is if I go ahead and try to finish the trailer for a breeding house and get rid of a couple of breeds I intended to eliminate any way.
Josie, the geese were acting nuts today. I did get an egg which surprised me after this storm. Anyway yesterday I saw the grey goose tackle a girl and today I saw my white curly boy nail my smooth breasted girl. So I have hopes. There is a lot of commotion out there. I was going to pull the smooth breasted boy but I can't do it alone and get the gate shut. He seems to be the biggest trouble maker and I haven't seen him breed.
Have you seen they now have a miniature Sabastopol? A friend of mine bought one for a ridiculous price that was supposed to be in molt and smooth breasted but she says he still hasn't developed any curls yet. She got him from Holdenreids I think to the tune of $400.

So cute! Love the snow chickens!
I haven't been around here much- life is just too demanding, but I do read posts when I can. However, with time off from teaching, and no place to go, I decided to take a little time out to play. Here's the result: snow chickens, of course. I conscripted the help of a real hen to show the size of the snowbirds. She does NOT like this white stuff!!

I hope everyone gets well. I keep catching stuff from my darling students. Why is it that the snotty-nosed kids are always the ones that want to give me a hug?
I'm stocking up on essentials today, bracing for the next round of snow. I always seem to forget that I should be careful what I pray for. . . .

I hope they are wrong too!!!
I sure hope they are wrong about this storm and it doesn't drop the snow predicted. They are talking ice again and freezing rain first for our area, then 8- 12 inches after that. I hope that isn't the case. I would be in a real world of hurt with ice. I'd never get my feed here.
The birds are eating more than usual cause they aren't getting out and able to dig in the dirt.
I've got to try to finish dumping snow off my pens today. I may try to take the shade cloth down completely but as heavy as it is I could make matters worse. It's been up a couple years and we hadn't had enough snow for it to be a problem before.
I really like salmon faverolles. Are yours standard or bantam? I bought a couple bantam from Ideal and they were mostly roosters except one pullet who is kind of an ugly little thing. I don't know what she is supposed to be but her color is definitely not right.
Danz, I'm sorry about your internet, that's the pits. I hope they can get it fixed for you soon. I hate it when ours goes down, I rely on my computer for so many things, especially weather info. The weather people are so uncertain about what is going to happen with the snow tonight, they keep changing their minds & saying they just aren't sure of how much we're getting. They say the system could move north or south in which case we would get more than they told us. I just hate this, we just got our side of the driveway by the house shoveled some yesterday & my DH shoveled me a path to the garage, now it will all be covered again. I never dug paths to my pens the last time, I just waded out there. I did get my plastic put over the windows in the new coop yesterday afternoon & then got my Salmon Faverolles moved in there. I haven't let them out because their pen is full of snow. I know I will be glad I got them moved when this stuff comes again. I had to just go ahead & put a pallet inside & put their water & food in there because there is no way to get the gate open to the pen for the snow & they wouldn't want to go out there to eat or drink anyway, especially after more snow. I know they will be happier in there since they have more room & a roost to sleep on where they didn't have that where they were. I need to get the hens a nest box put in today. They had stopped laying when the weather changed again. I have 3 little babies from the eggs I got before, they're really cute with their little feathered legs.
I am going to leave the tentative work day up for now but I am not optimistic that the snow will be melted enough by then to get much done. It is supposed to be pretty darn cold all week. Such a bummer.

I *think* I am free the 2nd so would be available to help. Hope the snow has melted by then....

I got the Rcom Max 20. That was a tougher decision than I thought it would be. They have the Pro that is a little more automatic but they want a lot more for it. In the end it seemed ridiculous to spend about as much for a Pro that still only incubates 20 eggs, as you would spend for a cabinet 'bator. For not that much more than the Pro 20, you can get the Max 50, so then I decided as long as I was spending that much, I should just get the Max 50. But then it hit me that no way do I ever want to brood that many chicks! So I went back to thinking about the 20's and after talking to ChooksChick, she said not to bother with the Pro because the Max does such a great job so having narrowed my focus, I was thrilled to find it for $379 delivered. It would have arrived less than 24 hours after I ordered it if it hadn't been for the storm. As it was, they delivered it Friday morning, about 42 hours after I placed the order.

I know some people who have ducks in the coop with their chickens put the bowls up on a platform that the birds can't get onto but can "reach" up and get a drink. Might help minimize splashing?

That's what worries me too. I just can't keep water in the coop because the ducks will for sure splash it everywhere, so I have to hope they'll step outside when they need to. I have noticed that any time I walk into the coop, they are very interested in pecking the snow off my boots. I just want to tell them - "Hey, there's plenty more of that outside - just step out and help yourself".

I had to laugh today at Wal Mart they have all the carts of hats and mittens marked as 50% off up front and people were going crazy over it.

Last year I got a pair of gloves at Atwoods when they were clearing them out after winter. They were 75% off so I only paid about $6 for a really good quality pair of gloves. I've worn them all winter this year and have never had cold hands with them on, so I'm pretty happy with them. I don't remember the brand, but we are getting close to that time of year again when they will be discounting stuff, so that might be an option for you.

Uh oh! Hope everything is okay...

A lot of drama going on for me - will fill you in when I can.

Once they start laying not much stops them. I used to find frozen eggs on the snow last winter. I wonder if my girls will ever lay this season....Sounds like your boys are getting down to business. Helps to have a few ganders who are "organized" instead of trying to covet all the females they pair off and mate one or maybe two geese. I have heard tid bits about mini sebbies but not that much. I do know someone was talking about serious fertility issues with them, kind of like class A serama. Don't know how much truth there is to that.

Well I ran around like a crazy lady today. Bought groceries for me and the critters. Got hay moved out for the horses, blanketed the big guys. Put straw down for geese and birds in coops, filled all their water and feeders so I don't have to haul much out there. Hoping we don't get as much snow as they are predicting. I did fashion a homemade sled out of rope and a tote to haul hay out to the horses because I can't trudge through a foot of snow with an armload of hay, it is just too much!

DH told me tonight that the city of Wichita is out of salt! I guess they are cutting way back on what they will plow because of it which doesn't make much sense to me. Why wouldn't you just plow and leave a snow pack? People would still be able to drive on it and emergency services would be able to get to people that need help....

Josie, my Salmon Faverolles are LF. I bought the rooster awhile back from a lady who said she bought from breeder stock. My hens are from a hatchery, but they're nice looking girls, at least they were before they started molting. I got 3 little chicks from them so far that I think I will keep for now & see how they grow out. They're so darned cute with their tiny little feathered feet.

Karen, I have a pip in the incubator, the first egg due today is pipping, but very slowly.

I went out since it was so warm this afternoon & got one more cover on my pens. I figured anything I could get done would help. I still have two more to get done yet, but that will have to wait until this darned snow is gone again. I went out & caught my Speckled Sussex & got those 2 hens & rooster in the new coop too this evening, so I was glad to now have two breeds in there. The two remaining pens & rooms are for the Swedish Flower Hens & Cream Legbars. They will be in the two middle pens.

Boy I hope they're wrong on all of this prediction on the darned snow. Everybody hang in there & stay warm!

Oh boy, another pip! Don't worry, Trish, however many you get will be good enough for me!

I'm with you, I certainly hope they're wrong this time. They've already cancelled school for the kids -- wow! They're convinced, anyway. I bet the kids will be home on Tuesday also, if it really does blast through here like they expect. The kids will love that! Good thing I've got plenty of hot chocolate!

We moved all our birds around, kind of like shuffling cards, to incorporate the newest pen into the mix. It was quite a project in the snow. We had to dig out ice packed snow so the new pen would have a reasonably dry base. Then we covered the damp ground with pine shavings and then moved birds here and there. They're all set, with straw bales placed strategically. What a mess but the birds are making all their happy noises. That makes me smile.

Hi everyone!

No I have not fallen off the face of the planet....At least not yet. I have been very busy with the day-to-day grind.

Danz - I wanted to tell you that "Pepper" the little Cuckoo I got from you has been an egg laying machine! It has been almost every day! She is definitely keeping pace with the Barred Rock mix I have. I hope you have been hanging in there with this crazy weather!

Deerfields - The Sussex girls are my two little buddies of the flock. "Saffron and Sumac" are always out to great me each morning I let all the hens out. Those two are the most vocal and let me know how the others were during the night. It is really funny to watch and listen to.

I hope everyone else is getting along with the weather. Just remember we so need this moisture so no complaints here. I know this will do loads for my hop garden.

A general question for everyone. I have been playing around with different bedding types lately. I started with pine shavings and those are a pain in the butt to "sift" to de-poop for composting. So I moved onto the wood pelts for horse bedding. So far those seem to be working, but seem to break down quick. I have yet to figure out a way to sift out the poop. I am very keen on keeping the poop as the high nitrogen is the best for the hop garden. You would not believe how much nitrogen hops suck up until they bear cones! Anyways, any thoughts and/or opinions are appreciated.

Another question is that my Amerucana, I picked up last year hasn't laid an egg in weeks. I know she is my oldest hen at almost 5 years. I am guessing this is normal for her age or she is just just ****** at all of the wild weather we have had the last several weeks. Thoughts here?

Stay warm everyone and get ready for Snow-pocalypse or Snow-mageddon, which every phrase works for you.

I like Snow-mageddon! Good to hear from you!

So, I like sand. I'm not currently using it because I have such a large number of birds. But you don't have ridiculous numbers and it may be just the ticket for you. Get some play sand in there and then all you have to do is get a scoop, like for a kitty box. You would want some wood ash, DE or Sevin mixed in to keep the lice/mites at bay. Scoop the poop and there you have it! Anyway, that's what I would do with fewer birds. Just make sure the sand is completely dry -- damp sand is not good.

Good luck with Snow-mageddon!

Hi all! Been busy this winter and wow(!) have I missed a lot o' posts! Hi to all the new folks since I last posted

Welcome!! I agree with Deerfield, but I think I would call it Snow-mageddon part DEUX: Revenge of the FLURRIES

I have a rare moment my internet is up so I figured I'd better post quickly while I had an opportunity. I sure hope getting a replacement for this device helps things.
We got a temporary reprieve and didn't get ice during the night. Thank you Lord!!!
So I got up early and called the co-op while ago. I've got to run out here in a minute and dig my tires out of the snow I use to weigh the tarp down on the snow. Maybe I'll be granted the grace to get there, get the grain, get it shoveled off and be ready for the storm. The truck DHleft me is not good on slick roads or snowy roads. I just pray the snow holds off until I get back home. Most of it is supposed to come in tonight now.
They changed the forecast for our area and now we are supposed to get 12" to 18" inches. The most I ever remember it snowing was 17 3/4 inches one night many years ago when I was working night shift. The snow off the roofs drifted over the doors so we couldn't get out of the building. They had to have the outside crew called in to dig out the doors so we could leave. Then as I left the parking lot my car cut a grove through the snow. Luckily I had a high setting vehicle then.
I hope the birds do okay through this mess. I noticed the houses were a little damp and ammonia smelling with them all staying inside. Luckily a few of them got out yesterday and got some fresh air.
Rob I have a couple open air houses that have no bedding. They just kick bedding out. But the result is that the poo dries up and becomes powder and composts itself. But these have vents on the back and big open door as well as air flow along the roof line. I think that is the key to no bedding. It stays amazingly dry. I have a Chinese man who likes using the poo from this house the best. Not sure how open your house is but it is worth a try.
It would be nice if I can get my feed and get it shoveled off and still have time to get those shade cloths down before the snow.
Well I'd better get moving. I have to be there in an hour or so and I have a lot to do before I leave

Hawkeye and Karen I buy the Ice Bay fisherman's gloves. They are neoprene and they are pricy but I think worth the cost. Here they are on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Glacier-Glove-ICE-BAY-Fishing/dp/B002N0IXVS
They are a little thick but easy to use your fingers with. And VERY warm even if you have your hands in water.
Hawkeye I bought a blade for my tractor last year. but DH has tried to use it the last couple days and he says it is just digging in. Is there a trick to using those things? We've had it over a year and had never tried it until now. I might have to get out and try it myself when he is working tomorrow.
Okay, those don't look like they are too expensive! I added them to my "favorites" so I could find them again. I really, really need rain boots (aka snow boots) for all this mucky wet weather. My cowboy boots are becoming soaked and won't dry out. I've been stuffing my feet into soaking wet boots for days now. I HATE it. I tried to buy cheap rainboots last year because of wet weather and they leaked the instant I set foot outside. They were those really cute ones from Walmart. So I decided no more cheap boots and I just ordered a pair of Wellies from LL Bean last night. Not cheap, but they had really great reviews and I just didn't read one bad review! I spent a few days searching reviews on rainboots that were under $100. ANyway, I'll now need to hold off on buying the gloves until next month. Sigh.

Hey, long time no see! Glad to see you hop on here! Because of you, we STILL have a tadpole sitting on my kitchen counter! LOL He has not grown in over a year. We've had him a year and a half and I swear he looks exactly the same. How is that?!? Anyway, missed hearing from you! It's too bad you didn't catch our group get-together last month, because Renee came down and several of us from Wichita got together and ate at HuHot, and I'm sure you would have loved seeing everyone! Next time! :)

I am so fed up with my internet. It has been down nearly constantly the last few days. I finally got hold of someone while ago and they have decided I have a defective device. So they are sending me a new one to see if it works any better.
I sure hope that works, I can't imagine my internet not working! I'd be throwing a fit!

Well I got out & had my DH help me with getting the remaining snow & ice off the tops of my pens. I was especially worried about the turkey pen since it has netting over the top & tarps over that, it was really sagging down with the weight & had bent one of the poles I had up there for support.

I'm so frustrated that we're getting more snow, I just feel like I need to be out there working on projects & I can't if we have a foot of snow on the ground. I want to get my little goat home as soon as I can, my friend is being great about taking care of her, but I hate to leave her there too long. I want her to get used to me too instead of her & then when I get her here & have the pen & shelter & all I need to find her a friend since her sister died. I read that goats are very social animals & need company to do well.
Glad you got your pens cleared off. What do you have left to do to bring your goat home?

I got the Rcom Max 20. That was a tougher decision than I thought it would be. They have the Pro that is a little more automatic but they want a lot more for it. I would be interested in the link, but can't buy it right now. Maybe I'll just ask you later! I went to Atwoods and they had TONS of gloves still, but none of them were the water-proof neoprene type I was looking for. Most were leather, work or gardening.

VERY smart about the "sled". I need to do that. I bought a bunch of horse feed and had no way to get it to the barn, so it's still in my vehicle for now. I need a tarp or something to drag it out on. I just can't wade thru all the snow carrying 50 lb sacks, I'd probably fall over. No idea on the snow plowing...??? Doesn't make much sense to me either.

I would lay down sand. I don't use it, but if you are wanting to screen out the droppings, that would work. I just use shavings and then dump them all into one pile together. So far the pile from last year seems to be composting fairly well. But I'm not screening out poop-- just tossed it all together.

Did you get all your feed?? Plenty of time yet it looks like. We've gotten Zero snow here and looks pretty clear. My coop is a little damp too from all the cooped up birds. Cant wait to get it all cleared out this Spring!
