Consolidated Kansas

Yeah It seems like in the past things went really cheap but I think now people get caught up in bidding and go nuts. I did hear back on the one I was looking at that was cheap but it is only 2 wheel drive. Defeats the purpose as far as I am concerned. I need to make a couple phone calls I guess and just see what I can work out on a couple cars I was looking at. If things don't look good then I will go talk to my Dad about his car and figure out what I am going to do.
I put this off for a long time and now I am already sick of dealing with it. I sure wish I could foresee the future. That would help a lot.

Hawkeye, I bought the cheapest pair of boots I could find at TSC about 5 years ago and they are still going strong. They've never leaked and I can walk through several inches of water and my feet stay dry (surprised me - what I remember most as a kid is leaky "gum boots" as we call Wellies). I wear them daily from November through about April, and they sit in a boot tray by the back door so I can slip them on any time I go outside. Last year I bought DD a pair on the clearance rack at Atwoods. They are a really cute black and white plaid design and I think I paid a whole $8 for them. She doesn't wear them as often as I wear mine but she says she has been happy with them. Before I left last week I decided to get DS a pair since he was caring for the birds for me and his feet have grown too big to slip into mine. I paid another $8 for a pair at Walmart, that look more like snowboarding boots than Wellies. He said they are comfortable and have worked for him the past few days. Time will tell how long they last before they fall apart, but at the price I decided it was worth the risk.

I lost one hen while I was gone. RIP Scramble. I *thought* I had a silkie egg in the egg basket, collected yesterday. It is a very small, cream colored egg, and looks just like Hawkeye described. But, DD told me this morning she found that egg in the upper level of the nest boxes and there is no way a Silkie got up there so now I'm thinking perhaps it was a Silchin.
Okay, I never did go to TSC! I didn't even think of them having rainboots. That is a great idea! You were lucky those boots from Walmart didn't leak. I probably got the only ONE that did leak. That is just my luck. Usually when I try to save money, I end up regretting it. Not always, of course... but on the things that count-- big stuff. I did look at Atwoods, but was sort of hoping for something a bit cuter.. I know, I know... vain. And it's not like the Beans are that much better looking, but they are black, which I like. Sounds like you've gotten great deals! I'm really sorry about Scramble... could she just have been old and given out naturally? Now, this isn't exactly the same, but when I was growing up a lot of our layers didn't live past 3 years of age. Of course... some of that was we ate them... haha But seriously, I think they started fading by that point. We had those white leghorns when I was a kid.

I think we got another 8 or so inches of snow yesterday.
I've gone through double the feed since this stuff began.
I am so irritated at my DH. He is the one that suggested a couple of these vehicles to me to look at and seemed all excited about them. So I got on board looking at the vehicles of his choice. Now he is saying I don't need to use a nice vehicle for a farm truck. I reminded him the outback was a very nice vehicle at one point and the purpose of getting another SUV type vehicle is so I would have room to haul feed and cages in it. He just can't see me having an all purpose vehicle. I tried to explain I didn't want to have to use a pickup anytime I wanted to go stock up on a bunch of chicken stuff or deliver a few birds here and there. So he just closes his mind. It is my money and my vehicle we are talking here...not his. But he seems to get ideas in his head then just blocks conversation when I am thinking something different.
If I make it to town I think I'll sit and talk to my Dad about this. I really do like his car other than color. It is a dark red color and I don't care for red vehicles. But at this point color isn't really an issue. I'll bet you are all getting tired of me going on and on about this stuff.
Glad you are back HeChicken. Hope everything is fine and back to normal.
Yikes, you got way more snow than we did! I'm not sold on this FF yet, when are they supposed to eat less? I've been considering it for the silkies, but I think I'll stick with what I typically do. I'm sorry about the car troubles, I was in the middle of them too back in October after I totaled my van. Or rather... the jerkwad that flipped the U turn in front of me killed my van. Anyway, it's such a big decision, and one you'll have to live with a long time! So really think about what you need and what you can buy. I think if you hunt long enough, you might find the perfect vehicle for you. I love my minivan-- I can fold down all the seats into the floor and it turns into an 8 foot pick bed essentially. I can put 8 foot lumber in there easy. I do it all the time. I actually do a lot of hauling in my van. I pick up grain probably once a week and in the summer pick up lumber as needed. I never have to run home and grab the truck for 8 ft 2X4's. But my van is a front wheel drive vehicle and so far has done well on the roads. I had my identical van before this one and loved it in bad weather. I wouldn't rule out front wheel drive too quickly. What about Subaru?? Most of their stuff is all 4X4 and they have an SUV line. If you could get one of those used...?? Yeah, I'm not a big fan of red cars, either. I don't know why. I love gold, silver, white and black. All of those colors (except the black) hide dirt really well, too! My white van never looked dirty, and it could be filthy!

Hawkeye had a really good name for that type of car but now I can't remember it.
Ghetto car or Hooptey car! hahahaha okay..now say this in your best Jeff Foxworthy voice: If you drive a neon orange car with flames on the side.. and it's an Oldsmobile... you might be in the Ghetto.

I'm one of the weirdos that like those bazaar looking vehicles sometimes. I used to have a purple mitsubishi with a spoiler, sunroof, and neon lights underneath. I traded it in on my old dependable contour I am being forced to drive right now. I traded in Topeka but the car ended up back in Council Grove where I lived. Some parents bought it for a high school kids 16th Birthday. My kids were still in school and they had a vote on the coolest car owned by a high school student. My old car won! Guess that shows how bazaar I could be.
THAT is hilarious!!! But it doesn't sound as bad as the neon orange car. Your car actually sounded pretty cool-- and it was a Mitsubishi (I'm guessing it was the Eclipse...) ONLY the Eclipse could pull that off! hahaha

I had a really good surprise waiting for me this morning when I logged onto the computer... My internet is working again!!!! I've been without internet here at my house for almost two weeks (since early in the morning on 2/15) and my internet is suddenly back on today, without any help from me and without the technician coming out. Don't get me wrong, I'm not cancelling Monday's appointment with the technician. I am just SO THRILLED to have internet back! I am one of those people that turns the computer on first thing in the morning and turns it off just before I go to bed, even on days when I'm not working. I then make trips to the office to check FB, e-mail, etc. throughout the day. During the most recent snow storms, my husband took our 4x4 pickup to town to work, which left me pretty much stranded here at home by myself with no internet. I was so thankful for radio but was also feeling VERY disconnected. I am so thrilled to be back online!!!! Happy day!

CONGRATS!!! And welcome back to the real world! (or as real as it gets online...) heh But at least you can see your news and social media again-- that is important to my sanity!

Danz~~ That is what I was thinking, something nice to go do town things, and then something to do chores in. That is what I do. We got a toyota pickup to run around in, but when I go somewhere, I take my GMC Crew cab. Course, it has hauled it fair share of chickens in it. I have seen some really nice cars, trucks and vans sell for good cheep prices on Purple Wave, and then some go outa site, but that is the way a lot of things are.
Great ideas!

I hope everyone is staying warm and all the birds out there are safe as well. My eggs hatched yesterday, 30 out of 33 those are ot bad odds. I am really pretty excited about that.
I am not happy about all this snow, my hens are slowing down in their laying.. Everyone is stuck inside and getting aggitated and picking on one another,, oh I hope it melts soon and we are all over this for the season..
Doing good so far! Congrats on the new babies! Those are pretty good odds!! Yeah, my birds have been on strike for a while. I can't imagine anyone laying right now. My girls don't want to. :(

I sure wish I could foresee the future. That would help a lot.
THAT is a resounding "ME TOO!!!" from me! Sure would help a lot! Gosh, if only!

Cars can be anywhere ~ I saw a nice looking big suv at a house on 56 with a for sale sign on it. I am not in the market for a car and it looked too nice for my budget anyway. One day I was talking to the neighbot lady and she pointed out the new to her car she was driving. Turned out it was the one I saw and she got it for 1K, runs good. For that, I would have worked it out If I had stopped to check it out. I could use more hauling room. Keep your eyes open.

Well I thought I found the car at the price I wanted. Wasted all morning and then some searching. My luck while I was negotiating with one salesman another salesman sold it! Only could happen to me. I did some more checking and my Dad's car is worth a lot more than I thought so I think I might as well keep looking for what I want. Nothing else I have found comes close to the mileage, clean carfax and price I found this one at. So I am back to square one.
I refuse to go from dealer to dealer to look on their lots.
Hawkeye I had a Subaru. That is what got totalled. Unfortunately I can't buy one any where near what I want to pay. They hold their value so well. And only an outback would do for space. I just don't want to finance anything right now. That is my problem. I want to stay within reason on price and still get what I want.
Hawkeye the Mitsubishi was actually a Mirage hatchback. It was one of the last ones produced in Japan and it was awesome looking. I needed more room cause my big teenage boys were having trouble all piling in that little car. My boys are 6'3" and 6'4" if that tells you why.

I'm wanting to start hatching in a serious way listening to you all! I'm just wanting to hold for another two more weeks!! LOL And then I hope to get some shipped eggs in from a reputable breeder. Her birds kick booty at the shows, so I sure hope I get something nice out of them. But yeah, they are MESSY!
I am dying to get my birds separated and hatch some from them. I have a few older girls that I really need to hatch from this year or I may not be able to at all!

I have a cheap pair from wal mart and I wore them the first day of the storm, they leaked and then the zipper broke! I have been wearing my pair of steel toed boots that I bought at the family center for when I use the lawn mower and they have been great.
You had better luck than me. And I don't think those are the boots I initially bought anyway. Yeah, I was talking about actual boots-- not slip-ons. The rainboots I bought last year from Walmart had a design on them, cost about $29 and leaked the second I walked outside. It was ridiculous. That's why I said, no more cheap boots for me! ha! BTW-- they make boot warmers-- or "boot liners". If you Google boot liners, there are free sewing patterns to make them or to buy them. I'm going to buy a pair of boot warmers for mine just as soon as I get them and see how I like them. They can take the place of socks. But I figure I'll wear them with socks. I bought these from LL Bean: These are "Wellies"
271162_1_42
These also came in other colors at no extra charge-- they had a really cute red plaid pair and cream, green, etc... But I decided to just buy the black and figured it will be easier to match.

One of my girlfriends back east was freaking out about me being alone out here and what if I had an emergency. I told her I try not to think like that because there is nothing I can do about it right now. I am stuck here until we get moved and move the animals so it is what it is.
Whoa, so glad that your power came back on right away. No fun to lose power, I bet that worried you! Glad everyone is okay, be careful out there!
She is heart broken. Her birds are her pets too, not just a business so it is really hard. I can't imagine losing them all. Another reason I really like the idea of open air coops, they can escape if a fire did start and wouldn't be trapped in a burning building. I will be so glad to have outlets for heated bowls and not have to worry about extension cords.
Oh that is soooo terribly sad!! Poor birdies! I bet that lady is just distraught over it all. Not only losing your barn, but all your birds too and years of hard work. Thanks for the reminder. My DH is eager for me to build my pens in the barn, but I think I'll be investing in sweeter heaters or EcoGlows! :(

I have been crocheting and working on this really cute fox scarf project. I'll have to take a picture of it when I get further along. It's looking pretty cute! I bought the pattern a while back on Etsy (LOVE that place) and just haven't done anything with it since. I was going to try to make it for xmas gifts, and then got busy, got sick for weeks on end and you know how it goes. I got hooked on Etsy when I planned our wedding. Now I just go and browse for fun sometimes.
So sorry about Scramble. She sounds like she was a special girl. Everytime I get in my head that I might put a heat lamp somewhere out there I talk myself back out of it. I am scared to death of a fire. Plus, none of my birds seem that bothered by the cold to need it. Even my serama are pretty tough.
I thought I would stop in and say

to everyone. I was gone for a few days but you know what they say "There's no place like home". I am so glad to be back after a trip where if something could go wrong, it did, but won't try and go back and respond to several pages of posts.

Josie, I've heard of several barn fires so far this season and the losses have been so devastating. I don't think I will ever provide heat in my coops for that reason. I brood my chicks up at the house, and my EcoGlows will be here soon so once they arrive I won't even need the heat lamp I've always used in the past. I can't even imagine what it feels like to lose everything all once.

I lost one hen while I was gone. RIP Scramble. She wasn't looking good when I left so I told DS it was a possibility so he wouldn't feel like he did something wrong. I wish I knew what caused her death. She was my oldest hen and the last remaining hen from my first batch of chicks when I got back into this in the summer of '09. She was about a week old when I got her and was a super dependable, calm and quiet Buff Orpington. She earned a forever home with me when as head hen, during the fox attack, she stayed out in the open and sang the egg song to warn me she could see the fox, instead of hiding with the rest of the flock. Her bravery that day will never be forgotten by me. Just before I left she started to look huddled and miserable. I palpated but could not find anything wrong with her - her crop felt good, her abdomen felt good. I suppose it is possible she was egg bound. She was a very dependable layer, and every Fall took about 8 weeks to do a hard molt, but came back looking beautiful and in her third season of laying, laid 3 eggs a week without fail. She molted as usual last Fall and in January did start to lay again but it has been several weeks since I last saw her in the nest box. However when I checked her over, I could find no signs she was actually egg bound, so I dunno. I may try to do a gross necropsy on her.

Aside from her, DS did a great job of keeping them in feed and water during two blizzards and they all look happy and healthy. It looks like a couple of new layers came on board while I was gone too

We got at least another 6-7 inches here. But it is very wet and sticky and seems to be melting today, yeah!!! I will be glad to get the birds back out to forage. They are eating like bottomless pits. I think they are getting bored silly too. A lot of them ventured out in the snow today on their little shoveled paths. Good luck with the car, hope you figure something out.
I think we got another 8 or so inches of snow yesterday. Of course there were new drifts at least 4-5 feet high but I am guessing by how the snow was piled in general. Thank goodness a lot of it melted. There was easily a foot or more on top my netting but I am sure once it started accumulating there was some drifting there too. If I never have another day outside like that again it will be too soon. There is huge drift down the Sabastopol pen that had it been 2 feet further over they could have walked right outside their fencing. I've been so tired the last couple days I haven't even attempted to gather eggs. I am sure I am going to have some frozen ones out there. I should get them gathered and see if I can get to town today. Not that I want to go anywhere. My shoulders and back are screaming after all that snow removing yesterday. I did do some shoveling as well but just enough to get the doors to the pens open again.
I've gone through double the feed since this stuff began. I am ready for the darned birds to get out and hunt some of their own goodies. I always end up spilling some here and there and it was a real treat to watch the cardinals and little snow birds all over yesterday. I used to feed the wild birds because I loved watching them but had to quit because they were bringing in too many colds and viruses. I think it was the starlings that were the worst. I would find them dead here and there. But I do so love watching the prettier ones especially in the snow.
I am so irritated at my DH. He is the one that suggested a couple of these vehicles to me to look at and seemed all excited about them. So I got on board looking at the vehicles of his choice. Glad you are back HeChicken. Hope everything is fine and back to normal.
I have always been a used car buyer but let me tell you this new car thing is pretty awesome. Nothing to go wrong and if it does its under warranty! I have always had older cars and it seems like they always need five extra things when you go in for an oil change. I love this Chevy Equinox too. It is so versatile. I can fold the back seats down, slide them all the way forward etc. to make room to haul stuff like lumber, chicken feed, birds. I can also haul our small trailer which is really nice. I have been super happy with it so far.
Danz, I don't know what to tell you about vehicles - one thing I really dislike doing is car shopping so I am no help at all. FWIW, I love my PT Cruiser and can haul an amazing amount of stuff in it - probably like you could in your Outback. The back seat is divided into a 1-seat and a 2-seat for easy removal. I love the options that offers me, where I can take both out and carry as much as I could in a pick up truck, or just pull out one or the other so I can haul some stuff but still carry passengers. Right now my car is a 3-seater as I have the double seat from the back removed. Then I have the single seat folded up against the driver's seat so I can still haul almost a full load but when I need to take both kids with me and go somewhere, I just fold the single seat back down and voila.

Personally I don't like having car payments as it always seems by the time you get done paying it off, its not worth much any more. So I usually try to find an older vehicle with preferably lower mileage and well-maintained, and hope it will last me awhile. At least doing it that way, I've never ended up upside down on a vehicle. If your dad's car is low mileage, well-maintained and will do 90% of what you need it to, I would be tempted to go with that. I don't worry about color at all as I figure that is the least high priority. The only car I've ever rejected for color was when my ex-DH tried to talk me into buying a bright orange car with a rear spoiler, and I just couldn't picture rocking up to playgroup and unloading toddlers from that hideous looking vehicle. Hawkeye had a really good name for that type of car but now I can't remember it.

Well I thought I found the car at the price I wanted. Wasted all morning and then some searching. My luck while I was negotiating with one salesman another salesman sold it! Only could happen to me. Well the sun is shining and the snow is trying to melt, woo hoo!!! I let the geese out even though I don't know where they think they are going to find anything to graze on yet! Silly birds, they just love to come out and run around, although several of them fell through the snow crust today which was pretty humorous!

I am working on painting window frames and trim today and then hopefully going to get to the walls soon. I am excited to paint the walls because it will seem like I actually accomplished something. Painting trim takes forever and it looks like you didn't do anything hardly at all hours later!

Hawkeye- I forgot to ask you, what did you use to wash your cloth diapers in? Is there anywhere local I can buy cloth diaper detergent or will I have to order it? I ordered reusable wipes, a few covers and flats for burp cloths yesterday with one of the Amazon gift cards I got at our shower in Maine. I also ordered two washable diaper pail liners but I need to get another wet bag from you sometime. Do you have any larger ones than the one I bought? Thought it might be good to have a bigger one for when we travel to Maine for a visit.

You can use grocery store detergent.. but use the good stuff. Tide is good, but avoid anything with optical brighteners. That's the "blue flecks" you see in powder. You will have to read labels. you can also buy cloth diaper detergent at Sweet Cheeks on Douglas. Healthy Baby Boutique just closed down. But Sweet Cheeks is a cloth diaper business-- does nothing else! and they sell cloth detergents. I have tired everything and I was soooo lucky-- my kids were not allergic to detergents. I was able to use Tide or Surf (with no brighteners). If your baby ends up having allergies, you'll want to stick with Charlies soap or soap nuts... both that can be found downtown Wichita. I'm even thinking that Food For Thought has natural soaps.. but don't know what brands. Definitely don't use anything that isn't approved for cloth. You don't want to wind up with wicking issues or reactions caused by soap residue mixing with urine. But not to worry! You won't need to order anything. I bet even Green Acres on Rock Road has natural soaps!

I'm not sold on this FF yet, when are they supposed to eat less? I've been considering it for the silkies, but I think I'll stick with what I typically do.

Hawkeye, my birds have not eaten any less, in fact they seem like they want to eat more. I had to laugh at someone saying that they think it's chicken crack because of the way the chickens act. Mine just act like crazy idiots, they jump in the feeder trough, on my arm, in the bucket with the food, even one day on my back, it's just bizarre. I also feed them sunflower seeds, but they just act like they're starving when I know they can't be with the amount of food I'm feeding them every day. The reason I have continued it is that mine are all getting new feathers & they're a lot shinier & nicer looking than the old feathers. You can definitely see the line where the new feathers stop & the old ones are underneath, the newer ones are just much more sleek.

Today I got nothing at all done except make a run to Wellington to the Dr. I finally got in & got some antibiotics. This was really the first day I had been able to get my car out since the first snow we had. There is still snow on the north side of the hill where the sun doesn't melt it off well. I sure hope we get some warmer days soon so the rest of this stuff will go away & I can get back out there & finish my pens so I can move the rest of the birds around.

Really? I didn't think you could use grocery store brands of detergent. We already use Tide cold water detergent. I used cheaper stuff for a while but our clothes didn't smell clean and I felt like I had to use a lot more than I did when we used Tide so we switched back. I will scope out natural detergent for now just so I don't add diaper rash or irritation to our first few weeks of diapering and maybe try the tide when I am getting low. I definitely don't want to ruin my cloth diapers!!

Do you ration out a certain amount per day or twice a day? I need to start doing that with the geese again once we get them moved. They are probably too chubby right now because they have been being free fed.

Speaking of detergent, the one I last made is the one I am going to stick with. It cleans extremely well and doesnt take much. It is baking soda, borax, and fels naptha bar soap. I love it. I havent even scented it but I was going to scent it with lavender ess oil. It has made a 5 gallon bucket full and only takes 1/4 cup per load. Love it. I am ready for some more homemade recipes,, pass them along!!!!

31 chicks out of 33 have hatched,, awesome!!!! I feel very confident
