Consolidated Kansas

Aw yes they move. That is the chick getting into position to pip. You're about to be a chicken Mama! Congrats!
I went out to find three of my Sabastopols running loose in the yard. Dumb birds. They chewed some more holes through their fence and got out. So after I finished feeding and watering I took a load of tywraps out and tied the fence back together. I need to just buy some more fence posts and put a permanent metal fence in. They have ruined this electric netting.
The wind at least is melting more of the snow and has actually dried up some of the mud. Not all but at least a little so I could at least push the wheelbarrow part way to feed the birds.
I got the chicks moved to the brooder and they were not at all happy! I need to split the young ones I still have in here so I can make room for the ones that should hatch in the next couple of days.

I have so much to do around here. The dogs got in a bag of trash when the wind blew over the trash can so Now I have a ton of trash that needs picked up as well. I'm not feeling very well so I just said to heck with it right now. I won't get a chance to work on the hoop coop for a couple days. I really would like to get it done. l close on my house refi tomorrow so that will take some time. Plus I promised to go spend some time with my Dad.
my eggs are hatching i got from you.. have 5 lemons and 1 lavendar so far.. alot more are pipped.. yeah.. thank you so much

First may I say this is the busiest thread EVER!! Everyday I get an update and it's like...117 new posts and I'm like.....eh, guess I won't read them lol.

Second, I have a question! We are almost done getting the coop/run/backyard ready for our chickens!!! Yay! BUT one concern: a previous owner of our property left trash everywhere in our yard. It's all gone now except pieces of plastic here and there, the occasional nail, water balloon remnant, tiny broken pieces of plastic, pieces of polyester fuzz, landscape fabric, etc. Just little pieces under grass and hidden under dirt or twigs. How meticulous do I need to be in picking these bits up? They are all over the yard, and if you dig a couple inches down, you find more scattered about. I am afraid they will clog their throat or something with some of it or not be able to pass it and die. Let me know please what you think...I am willing to nit pick the whole yard if I have to...
Chickens will eat ANYthing. Epecially if it's shiny -- I would try to use a rake and see if you can't get most of that picked up-- at least in the area where they will be. Sounds like a lot of work. We have a HUGE party every year at my house for the 4th of July. People come here and shoot off their fireworks and we even have a DJ that plays music. We have a TON of trash left over from all the spent rockets, fireworks, etc... I spend a week with the kids every morning and most evenings and we walk the yard with trash sacks. We pick up anything we see, no matter how small. We've kept our yard pretty darn clean even after years of hosting these events! I will ocassonaly find something I missed from the year prior- but when I do my first mowing out in the back I take another trash sack with me so I can stop frequently and get anything I've missed. I have about 3 acres to search, and we manage well. Just anytime you walk out, take a Walmart sack with you and pick up anything you see. It's a real PITA for sure. I understand.

Hawkeye, I am going to mail those grant forms to you. I called the Bernita, and she is mailing me an entry form for Sedialia.

I plan on taking photo's to day of the barn. Since it has been so windy, still has to trash to haul out, but that is no big issue. So, anyway I may just make several post cause other wise going to be really picture heavy.

Plan on taking the rosecombs back out side today. Yesterday was just to windy for them to be out and not be able to get out of the wind. I may take a black ameracauna to sedalia too.
I am going to sell my wheaten ameraucana pair, if anybody is interested. She is two, and the male is almost 1.

Danz- I am going to try a dr in leawood that is alittle closer to me anyway. I just want a dr that doesnt look at me, young and with lots of tattoos and instantly catagorizes me, that is the situation at the other clinic. Ah just like the shoplifting suit against me from my local town grocery store,, the only one in my town, he is a single minded christian who saw my pentacle necklace and began following me throughout the store baggering me. He must have watched every security tape from when I would come in and found one he wanted to use and we went thru this big ordeal and the court threw it out because you can see me ut the item back on the shelf for crying out loud.... SO it was dissmissed with the terms I was not to shop there for a year and that another instance was not to occur, I told the judge " dont worry your honor I will never shop there" Gotta love people with nothing better to do than make their life about you

Anyway I am blabbering... IT is a nice day. I put eggs in the incubator yesterday, it is an endless cycle huh?? Wait for them to hatch and then do it all over again.. My bantams from Ideal are starting to learn to crow and they are a month old. I cant wait to finish my pens so they can get outisde.
I still am looking for turkey poults or a young turkey hen or 2. I really dont want to pay the crazy amounts that some people ask. I will keep looking I guess.
Everyone enjoy this sunshine and hopefully the wind will not be crazy today.

Not to disagree with Hawkeye. They will pick at shiny things and they love styrofoam, but other things around here I haven't had a problem with. My concern with things are things like string or bailing twine etc that they can get their feet tangled in. They used to feed cattle here and we must have 10000 pounds of twine and string and stuff that works its way up to the surface and the chickens get it tangled on their feet. If you can go over your lawn with a lawn mower without a lot of stuff being moved I think you'll be okay. Just be sure that anything toxic is gone The polyester fuzz and landscape fabric could be a problem. I wouldn't worry about a nail or pieces of plastic too much.

On the hoop coop they said any structure you could stand up in & could store something potentially like a tractor, it would be taxed. I would like to see them prove I could get a tractor in any of the doors on these pens, because they're small. They're going to be hearing from me if they try to tax all of my dog runs just because they have tarps over them. I'm going to wait & see if they come here too before I build the goat shelter because they said even that if it was very big could get taxed. They're really reaching this year, they have never done this kind of thing here before. They taxed us on the garage & I don't think they even taxed our shed when I used it for that before we converted it to a coop, it was in bad shape. I'm not even going to say anything to my DH about this until we see what they do here. He'll just get all upset & worried when we don't know what they will do. I hope I'm here when they come though, I don't want them treking through my property without me here. I agree with you checoukan, I don't like strangers just showing up at my place unannounced.
Yes, I have 3 Wheaten Ameraucana chicks now. I just put the two new ones in the brooder in the sun room with the others. Gosh they grow so fast that the new ones look like midgets compared to those others! I'm proud of you for not bringing home chicks! I haven't gone anywhere they have them yet. I know I will be drawn there, but I don't need to be getting any either. I already have chicks coming in April.

I wish they were that liberal here. There isn't a building here other than the barns and peacock pen you could get a tractor in. Size doesn't seem to matter here at all. I still wish I could keep them from just walking on the property here. If I make a trip to the assessors office I am going to appeal to them to keep their people off the property without contacting me. If she is out walking around everyone else's property she could be bringing in disease from them. It made me angry last year and I am feeling that way again.
I went out this afternoon after my DH went to work & moved a couple posts I wasn't happy with on the goat pen then added 4 more that I found just to tighten it up. I don't think you can have too many posts when you're dealing with goats. Now I'm pooped out, pounding in t posts is hard work! I have a nice hay & grain feeder combo that was out in the barn for years & was never used, I plan to put it to use now for the goats. I put some staggered tree stumps in there for them to play on. I made sure they're in the middle so they can't use them for steps to get out of the pen. I also put their shelter in the middle too for the same reason. I have to go out tomorrow, it's supposed to be warmer then & put the chicken wire over the livestock panels since my friend says the babies can get through the squares right now on the panels. She put up 700 feet of chicken wire all around her fence to keep her dogs in. Can you believe she put up that much chicken wire? Wow, I can't even imagine doing that & by herself too. Danz, this is the lady that has both Paisley & Fern, the GPs. They're doing just wonderful at her place. Even Paisley the house dog has become an LGD & is doing well with her goats. She & Fern work together at night now. I am so thrilled things have worked out for them & for her.
I hope she got her wire cheap. That's a ton of chicken wire!!
Oh, I got my first Cream Legbar egg today, I'm so thrilled! Now the rest of the hens need to get with it. None of the Swedish Flower Hens are laying. The black & white one had started awhile back, but since moving she has not laid again. The Salmon Faverolle hens stopped laying after being moved too & so did the Speckled Sussex, so I hope they all get used to their new home & get with it soon. You would think they would be so glad to be in that nice coop instead of outside, but they're still not sure about the pop door. The roosters all seemed to figure it out really fast, but the hens are slower to take to it. I did have a little trouble getting the SFH roosters into the coop tonight so I could shut their door. I kind of had to push them into the door & shut it fast. They'll all get it soon I hope.
My swedish are laying pretty good and I'm finally getting some fertile eggs. No babies yet but I do have a couple in the hatcher getting ready to hatch. They've been fighting a cold off and on so I am thinking that might have lowered their fertility for a while.
my eggs are hatching i got from you.. have 5 lemons and 1 lavendar so far.. alot more are pipped.. yeah.. thank you so much
I am so happy!!! I do hope they do very well for you and you had good fertility. I certainly want you to get your money's worth.

Can't wait to see the pictures. I want to see your office especially. I can imagine all the stuff being in place. ..so that doesn't matter.
Maidenwolf, I hope this doctor does you some good. I despise people who judge people by the cover. They should see you as the beautiful young lady you are and not make judgement without getting to know you.
Yes hatching is definitely an endless cycle. In my case I have chicks coming out every few days when I start hatching seriously. It becomes a lot of work maintaining all the incubators. I actually do much better when I am hatching lots because I take the time to check them a few times a day. Right now I am letting the incubator do the work for me.
I do hope to have some poults later but so far only the midgets are laying and they command a premium price due to their rarity.
I think if I had to get rid of lots of birds I would still have turkeys. I just love them to death. I really love to hear the boys gobble.

hi guys milomac from Wichita retired postal, I've evesdropped on yall for several months, finally ready to join in. I keep 6 LF of different breeds to make a pretty egg carton. I also have have 5 banty amaracauna pullets just laying first eggs and there rumpless rooster. After a while I've been able to figure the main players on this forum and how yoy work. Really I got nuthin letting you know there are more people out here than you realize

Danz, I love my turkeys too, my tom loves to talk & he loves women & girls. He shows off for them any time they come to look at him, I think it's hilarious. I have not seen mine mating yet, but that doesn't mean they haven't. I'm hoping for some eggs before too long.

It's supposed to be 50 here today & 64 tomorrow, so I need to get out & do some things outside that need to be done. I'm still waiting on things to dry up before I can get cattails again & clean out all my pens & layer coop.

The Cream Legbars & SFH are still not used to the inside of the coop yet. Last night I had to run some of them in again at time to shut the pop doors. The Speckled Sussex & Salmon Faverolles figured it out pretty fast, but they had somewhere to go in at night before & the others were in a dog run. I hope they all get with the program & get to laying now, that would be nice to be able to gather eggs & start incubating some.

Maidenwolf, have you figured your colors out on your chicks, and what breeds did you end up with?
I ended up with a nice array of OEGB which I really was wanting to get into. Some of the colors I am not sure because they are still developing and I have yet a trained eye for it. I know for sure I have a spangled, BBR,, white, buff, blue, silver campine, golden duckwing, blue ginger, gold laced. I am not sure on all of them. I do have a black, buff, white and I believe birchen bantam cochin out of it. 2 modern games one is blue the other black. I should take some pics and post them for you all to help maybe. I think I have alot of boys and if so will need to rehome them or trade.

Danz- thank you for the kind words. It is very hard to have someone judge you right away. I have dealt with it my whole life but when it comes in the way of my health care it sickens me and is a waste of my time. It is going on 4 years of them farting around not wanting to believe I am in such pain and agony but with every test they take and it comes back with rediculous numbers they tuck their tail and quietly try something else.. I just think I could be doing better by now but instead I am a walking zombie. It is silly and I will take all the prayers or finger crossings available on this.
