Consolidated Kansas

Hi all! I'm brand spanking new here. Just joined the site about an hour ago. Lol I currently don't own any chickens, but my husband and I are considering it. Probably won't be until next year, but I'm researching what we need to have and know now so we can be ready for them. Any advice you have for a city girl would be very welcome! :) thanks!

Glad to have you here. It will depend on how many chickens you're planning to have for one thing. How fancy or plain you get with a coop is up to you, the chickens don't care as long as they have shelter & food & water. Chickens are a lot of fun to have, they're very entertaining & once you get some you just want some more. Chicks are about the cutest things on earth, nothing too much greater than a fluffy little chick. You might read up on breeds & look at pics online & see what kinds you might want to look for to start out. That will depend too on what you're wanting them for, if it's for mainly just eggs for your family or pets or if you want to breed them, show, etc. There is a lot of great info on BYC, so do a lot of reading on here & just hang out with us, we all learn new things every day, you don't stop learning even if you have had chickens for years.

Chooks, congrats on the articles! I hope to be able to come to the next gathering, I was out of town the last time.

chickie heve a need for an update on banty with a yarn..101 maybe we can give you an update on what our favorite hen was and help educatate you on merits of various breeds. I have had several EE muts, they were a smalish bird that seamed to lay year roundand maybe just me but their molt didn't appear to be as long

Mrs broody pants is still setting on one egg. I've taken the bo eggs out and so she only has the one egg. Will she lay more? She also attacked my roo while he was trying to mate another hen is that normal?

Since I live in Wichita, I can't breed. No rosters allowed. I'm thinking of starting with three since that is max I can have without a permit. Wait and see how it goes before I spend the money on that. Lol I am thinking of just layers for now. If like ones that give a colored egg to give my girls a thrill, but idk where to even start looking or what qualities to look for.

Welcome to the group. Lots of experience here so feel free to ask lots of questions. I was in your shoes a year ago when I first started. Learned a LOT from the folks here. They are a great bunch. Crazy at times, but still the best in my book.

WichitaKidd, congrats on the new chicks - they look great. Sorry about the losses but I think I would do the same and get the credit because if you get replacement chicks, you'll have to brood them separately and have mixed ages. Oh, by the way, Betty is laying!!! I saw her in the nest box for the first time a couple of weeks ago but didn't know if she was just checking it out or really laying. Then a few days ago I was in the coop and while I was there, she stood up and laid the egg right in front of me.

I had the same thought too about having to brood 2 groups of chicks. My brooder is big enough & can be divided so "technically" I have everything setup to do it; just didn't feel up to it this time. I had to do that with one of my birds last year & it definitely is more stress than I care to take on right now.
So glad to hear that Betty is laying. It was the one thing I feared she would never do after her attack. If you end up setting any of her eggs to hatch let me know. I may want a chick just for sentimental reasons.

Congrats Chooks! That's great you're writing articles!

Okay, guys let's figure it out. That was so much fun getting together with chicken people! Anyone want to recommend a day? Check your calenders.

All depends on what day(s) of the week chooks will be here that week. If it's an evening I can make it definitely count me in. Had too much fun last time to pass it up again.

I raise several colors of Ameraucanas that lay blue to greenish eggs & I will be hatching all summer. The chicks are straight run though, I can't sex them. Let me know if you're interested in any.

I raise some different colors of Ameraucanas that lat blue & greenish eggs. I will be hatching chicks all summer if you're interested. They will however be straight run, I can't sex them.

Chooks-- CONGRATS on the paid for articles! YAY!! You are big time! hehehe! Anyway, I'm really excited for you, so that's great!! You have soooo much info to share, so I'm so glad that is working out for you! If we get to stay, I'll be picking your brain for some ideas on how to convert the front part of my horse barn into breeding pens.

WELCOME to Chris0110! Glad to see you here! I thought Wichita allowed 5 hens with no permit?? WichitaKidd would know-- but I think the permit allows you to have 12 hens and it costs right around $30 a year..?? I think that's right. But I'm pretty sure you are not stuck with only 3 birds! That seems like a really low number!

Hope everyone is doing great, I really didn't have a chance to multi anything, so I'm sorry! Been extremely busy. The rain caused a lot of problems for me. I had to move all of my silkies into the barn into another horse stall and divide them up in there. So my oldest horse is now stall-less. But she doesn't really care, the feed bins in the stalls flip out into the breeze-way, so I turned it around so I can feed her and lock the other horses up. And now my silkies are DRY! Whew! Their pen got soaking wet! I'm going to need to dig out all of the bedding and let the pen air dry and start again. Which is fine, but I had so many other things going on, it was bad timing. I also have a very sick silkie-- the one that won at Nationals and then won Res Grand Champion Featherleg at State. I've been injecting her with Baytril-- I just do NOT want to mess around with her. So I'm hoping she pulls through! It's an upper respiratory infection. This is the first time I've ever dealt with bubbly eyes! But that is what she has-- that and a runny nose. Which reminds me, she needs her injection this morning. Sigh. I think she got really sick in the pouring rain a couple days back-- everyone else dried out and she looked like she melted. So I bathed her in warm water and blow-dried her out and then started her on the Baytril. Electrolytes in her water. I'm crossing my fingers she pulls through, I'm worried. I tell you though-- that VetRX really perked her right up! I put a drop down each nostril and she immediately came back to life-- probably because she could BREATHE well again!
