Consolidated Kansas

Deerfield is right, to all the new people lurking out there, speak up. We want to hear about your birds & your coop or whatever you would like to add to the conversation. We ramble on here about various things.

I decided today to just go back to giving the turkeys regular feed. A few days ago they decided themselves that they weren't liking the FF that much any more & they haven't been eating it well. Tonight I was short of FF anyway, I don't know if I fed more than usual last night or what, but I ran short, so it wasn't hard to decide to just feed them regular feed. They're kind of picky birds, I have tried various treats for them & feeds, but they don't like the same things that the other birds do. The chickens, peafowl, & guineas are still eating the FF well. HEChicken what do your turkeys like to eat? I need some new ideas for them. I like to give my chickens & other birds treats, but I really haven't found anything those turkeys really like I have been growing sprouts for the chickens since there hasn't been much green outside for my free rangers to eat, but they aren't crazy about them. I don't think I'm going to grow any more for them because they just look at them like what is that? They'll eat them if they're really hungry, but otherwise they just lay there on the ground or in the feeder.

I can't wait to see the pics of your chicks Karen, wow it sounds like Frank raises monster chickens. Speaking of monster chickens, there was an ad on CL for Malay chickens & my friend send me a photo, gosh I have never seen anything so huge in my life! I would hate to feed those things.

Trish, my turkeys don't get any special treatment, I'm afraid, so I'm not much help. I fill my gutter feed with pellets every morning and the entire flock eats from it off and on all day - that's all they get. Since none are showing signs of malnutrition, I guess they're feeding themselves well enough

. The only treats they get are kitchen scraps, and I throw them out into the chicken yard it is a free-for-all to get the best bits. I can't recall seeing Ned get into the fray but Madge is right there with them, grabbing her share and running off with it. I have noticed that she specifically likes apple cores and always tries to be the first to get to those and run off with them but beyond that I couldn't tell you what, of the things I throw out, she likes the best.

I tried sprouting 2-3 winters ago and my results were about the same as yours. They eventually ate them but they didn't go ape over them and it seemed like they lay around for awhile first. I tried sprouting about a dozen different types of seeds and beans but the response to each was lukewarm, so I eventually decided it wasn't worth the hassle and haven't done it again since.

Maidenwolf,
The one white with color showing on the hackle feathers is most likely a red pyle. The next bird, is a pullet, and it looks like she will be a black breasted red (BBR).
Been a long day today, and now it has started raining. Not much going on, and I think I am going to call it an early nite.

Oh, don't forget to set your clocks up 1 hour.

Hey you new people, don't be shy just jump right in! Take some pics of your birds, coop, whatever -- we love pics and nothing has to be fancy.

Speaking of pics, I need to take some pics of my chicks. I'll do that tomorrow.
Amen to that!!! Don't be intimidated for even a split second...we're all a bunch of chicken nerds who talk to our birds and fawn over anything to do with chickens, duck, peas, geese, etc. We will be dorky and love everything you do, ghetto or urbane!

Speaking of, I've graduated. I was featured in an article a couple of years ago, but now I'm getting paid to write the articles!! The May/June issue of Chickens from the Hobby Farm folks will have not one, but TWO articles by me. Be kind...if I've made a major error in my opinions, do tell me, but like I'm a friend who has spinach in her teeth, not like some of the mean-girl comments.

I'm going to head toward you Wichita area folks again Mid-April...I'd like to do it mid-week this time. Will you guys talk amongst yourselves and pick a good day when we can all get together? I can schedule my visit around you guys. If you need anything egg-wise, I can't promise who will be laying, but keep an eye open for what's on auction and pm me. I'll bring you eggs, maybe chicks! I have joined the Easter hatchalong and will have a bunch of chicks resulting, and all of the B/B/S/Mottled banty Cochins, Isabel Orps, South Americans, FBCMs, and maybe others will be up for grabs.

New folks, this includes you!! If you're closer to Wichita than Lawrence, make sure you cast a vote on a get-together date! We had a lovely time chatting in a big group over dinner last month, and I'd love to do it again with as many as can join. We don't bite!

NorthEast Kansas folks, if something on my list looks good, let me know. It's about time we do some gatherings here again...When, where????

So...who else is having hatching mania? I set 130-odd eggs today, having not set ONE since Christmas...I was Jonesing *really* badly!!!!

Congrats Chooks! That's great you're writing articles!

Okay, guys let's figure it out. That was so much fun getting together with chicken people! Anyone want to recommend a day? Check your calenders.

Hi all! I'm brand spanking new here. Just joined the site about an hour ago. Lol I currently don't own any chickens, but my husband and I are considering it. Probably won't be until next year, but I'm researching what we need to have and know now so we can be ready for them. Any advice you have for a city girl would be very welcome! :) thanks!

Renee, I joined the hatch too. I have a LOT in the incubator. I joined the Easter swap and sent off 24 eggs to 2 swap partners and received 26. So excited to see what hatches!!

The pullet has a red chest does that matter on teh BBR? I have a couple boys that look BBR for sure but this one I was almost thinking silver or gold duckwing? I can get a better pic I know those were terrible.
